Let's be real, Aether and Lumine will always choose each other - they'd always been journeying together before the events of the game. They most likely feel like two halves of one whole. That said, I doubt they'd ever feel the need to have a choice be made, unless a potential romantic partner tries to get between their bond with one another. They're either extremely long-lived or fully immortal rather than having human lifespans, so they probably wouldn't mind waiting for their twin to spend time with their romantic interest until the relationship breaks or the mortal partner passes away. In the end, the twin will seek out their other twin for continued (platonic, surely) companionship. We see through the story just how incomplete your chosen twin feels without the other, and we see through the flashback comparison CGs into the distant past to the unchosen twin just how crushingly lonely the unchosen twin is without their other half with them. I think it's a beautiful symbiotic bond, and it also makes them being separated all the more horrifying if you consider how long-lived they are, and the fact they may have already lived for hundreds or thousands of years, always at each others side. I've been reading the comics and watching the CG content for a long time, but I didn't begin playing the game until very recently. It gives the whole journey a melancholic air to it, playing through the game and wondering what is going through my chosen twin's mind and heart.
