The funny part about Nirvana barreling in & wiping out pretty much every artist of the time was that Kurt Cobain was actually a very quiet pop fan. He drew inspiration from several different pop acts & in a way, became something of a pop act himself. Between having to maintain the anti-bubblegum persona he was boxed into & the shame of “selling out” in the punk community, he rarely discussed it publicly but several people close to him have confirmed it. And I like that! It humanizes him in a way I don’t think a lot of people get a chance to see.
The accusation about "Grunge" wiping out the standard of commercial music back in the early 90's is a sort of myth. It was actually radio and music video station programmers along with record companies that did it... by force. There were many Alternative/grunge songs that saturated top 40 radio and especially MTV and only a handful of them charted well no matter how many times they were spun. Adult Contemporary/ Pop music actually dominated the early 90's. Hip Hop & R&B took over in the mid 90's. Then teen pop came back BIG in the late 90's into the early 00's
More people need to realize the pop aspect of Nevermind. Kurt was eyeing catchy melodies, instantly recognizable intros, and world domination. Nirvana was a boy-band with a grunge front.
Must be the most stupid comment I've ever read!! Kurt Cobain liked the Beatles, the vaselines he liked melody like most songwriters! This has nothing to do with music like this! Kurt Cobain hated it! He hate pearl jam because they were to commercial! Your just making up stories about a dead person which is sick
NKOTB were such a huge part of my childhood. They were cheesy as hell but it worked, their songs were so catchy and I still listen to them to this day when I'm feeling nostalgic. I saw them on their reunion tour in 2008 and it was magical. And I don't remember them lipsyncing at all.
New Edition heavily inspired NKOTB. They deserve recognition. Just like we recognize that the Jackson 5 inspired NE, NE deserves recognition for inspiring so many boy bands in the 90s and 2000s. Hell, even Boy II Men took inspiration from NE. That’s how they got their name.
That’s because Maurice Starr modeled them off after New Edition, which he managed briefly in the beginning. He wanted to create a white version of them.
I remember watching that interview with Arsenio Hall. Although upset about constantly defending themselves, they handled it with maturity. Hall's talk show was groundbreaking and one of a kind. So many people graced that show.
If it weren’t for New Edition and New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC wouldn’t have been formed. Lou Pearlman, who put to get BSB and NSYNC, saw the success of NKOTB and wanted to replicate that.
Yeah...The New Kids had leased a jet from Pearlman's company back in like 90'...Pearlman was quoted saying "How can these kids afford a plane like this?" He was invited to one of their conserts and was amazed by how many fans there were and how much money was being made hand over fist. 3 years later...Backstreet Boys were born, then etc.
Also, the Backstreet Boys said they were heavily influenced by Boyz II Men (songs like _I'll Never Break Your Heart,_ _All I Have To Give,_ and _'We've Got A Goin' On_ from their debut album).
I’ve never realized how thick their accents are. I listened to them as a kid because my sister loved them, not to age myself 😅 I still listen to Hangin Tough and Step By Step from beginning to end to this day. I listen to Face the Music for a laugh.
I had the blessing to watch them live in 1990 at The Magic Summer Tour and last July in The Mixtape Tour and both were incredible shows. They didn't lip sync on both shows. I think NKOTB was underrated back in the 90s due to their merchandising stuff; it became bigger than their music and talent. In fact, Face the Music had great reviews by the critics, but the demand wasn't there and the guys were worn off then. Music Industry should pay respect for NKOTB because, even though New Edition could be the blueprint for Modern Boy Bands, it was NKOTB who set the bar so boy bands now could be seen as valuable acts in the industry. Thanks for this video, Honest. It's good to see someone today giving them the respect and recognition they truly deserve.
I would also like to mention about the lip syncing allegations in 1991? I think they went on a show and performed completely live to debunk those allegations also Jon’s brother the lead singer Jordan also developed major anxiety due to the allegations as well.
If you remember when they were on live TV shows like "don't just sit there" and The Mickey mouse club and the morning show is like Good morning America etc, they all sang live with a microphones and you could totally tell that it was them and they were NOT lip syncing!! Especially because you could hear the sound. But you just have to be GenX or older to know anything about it
I think that other acts such as Janet Jackson faced criticism for doing heavy dance pop, new jack swing and rnb at the beginning of her career. Many claimed she didn't sing but, at least to me, she really sells the emotion of what she's singing about. And she's a very commanding dancer, with impeccable choreographies and amazing music videos. Nowadays, people are more open into realizing what makes an artist more unique. Not everyone has to exceed at the same field or meet the same landmarks.
I loved Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson and Paula Abdul as an 8 year old. I used to have Rhythm Nation on VHS and used to try and copy Janet's dance moves 😂. She has recently been giving interesting interviews to coincide with a Vegas residency. I will always have a soft spot for her music. I think that she can sing, but like you said she is also a dancer, and a song writer and producer. Her music has always been more interesting to me than these sugar sweet power ballads sang by divas. Rhythm Nation had themes based on black feminism and poverty. She stepped out of her famous brother's shadow.
The group is far more than their music as a fan since 88, the relationship they have with the fans is truly one of mutual love. My best friends cousin died of cancer a few years ago and a floral arrangement was at the funeral home sent by NKOTB. They truly love the fans and prove that day in and day out! They could sit on the stage and talk the whole show and I would be there!
New Kids were far great and better boy band in history, The boy band was good as them. Maybe the Backstreet Boys were a great boy band too, but no other boy band can’t be ever good as they were or be remembered.
New Kids On The Block took major risks that could have hurt their careers. Donnie spoke his mind about injustice and even wore a Public Enemy shirt in the Step By Step video. They also took a major risk by singing R&B so they definitely made it easier for other white artists who came after them who sang R&B like Jon B, Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake. I think they should get more recognition for the risks they took. I have nothing but respect for them and I hope a movie is made about them. New Edition got a movie, they deserve one too.
you mean Maurice Starr took major risk they just had to perform there first album flopped if he didn't convince the label to let them do another album you wouldn't even know them 😌
@@terejosh13 Maurice Starr believed in them. Janet Jackson and Toni Braxton's first albums flopped also, and they became so successful after being given another chance. Sometimes magic happens when people are given a second chance. 😊
I bought there album in middle school when no one else in my school was really rockin their shit. I didn’t care. I liked their music. One thing I kinda take issue with is the notion that the whole boy band thing is innovative. They’re singing pop and r&b. Young black artists have been doing the same thing for years. It’s only unique and interesting when white kids do it, then they give it a new name “boy band”. It’s a nonsense category imo.
Love their Boston accents😂. I had the lunch box when I was little like 5 or 6. But BSB has been my favorite since I was 12 lol. I'm now in my late 30s 😅
As an Asian born in the 70s, NKOTB was a great influence in my life! They were my first boyband love. Also, they inspired another music genre e.g. K-pop
Also please don’t go girl was made with virtually the same chord progression as New Edition’s Is This the End and the songs both have the same subject matter. The songs sound so similar in fact that NKOTB and New edition performed a mashup version of the songs at last year’s AMA’s
Okay I love boy and girl groups and their history in pop music, these videos are really my thing so thanks! They've been great. New kids on the block are pretty interesting to me, and I didn't know about that interview, it's actually cool they could defend themselves that way since bandwagon hate is something easier to jump on when it comes to boy bands, even they can't sing thing, I think only Boyz II Men were free of that stigma.
in '93 Dirty Dawg' was released as a single and we all were like "ugh, they're trying to act hard now." It didn't fit well. There was still some good pop acts on the radio that year like Jeremy Jordan & Joey Lawrence, but sounded like NKOTB was trying too hard to act grown up. I've got nothing against lipsync. It can help prevent voice problems from overuse, nodules, tiredness etc. If you're miming to your own voice. I get it. Lipsyncing to someone else's voice like Milli did - then hell no!!
@@anngulliver5964 Vocal chords can get overused. No, I'm not being ageist thank you. It all comes down to how much you're using it and whether you're getting enough time to rest your vocal chords. Thank you.
@@celine4evauk I agree with you. Thank you for expanding. I will expand and say that they are fantastic singers such as Tom Jones who still has a fabulous voice and he's 84. He looks after himself, his voice and uses proper technique.
NKOTB were the pioneers, more talented, more organic, soulful and had a better look than the latter boy bands. I don't know why the later boy bands were more successful.
Interesting. The only one in New Kids on the Block that could sing was Jordan Knight (barely). They have a really nice song entitled _Never Let You Go_ from 1994's _Face the Music._ I like that song because it reminds me so much of Al B. Sure. I can hear him on that song. Anyhow, who were New Kids on the Block signed to? Which label? Need I say more? The President of that label was gon make sure it worked out for his favorite artists/bands. I believe he was the most powerful man within the music industry during the time. I don't think they were "Milli Vanilli." They simply couldn't sing. I don't believe they had ghost vocals on they songs. It's so interesting watching how the Milli Vanilli story done changed so much throughout the years. The President of they label went on record and stated that he had no idea about what was going on. That's interesting because back then, *NOTHING* hit the airwaves until it was given the green light by the President. Milli Vanilli went on record and stated that they were just doing what they were told to do. Who told them what to do? How did the President not know about what was going on? The same thing goes for C + C Music Factory. The President of they label didn't know what was going on as well. He knew Ms. Martha Wash was singing on them songs. Anyhow, Paula Abdul just couldn't sing. Bottom line. No way around it. See, here's the thing about music/singing (in America). Most Americans do not care about the small stuff. That means they ain't gon be sitting around picking apart a performance determined to find out whether it's lip-sync or not. Most Americans do not care. Pop fans of New Kids on the Block, Madonna, etcetera simply do not care. They pay to see they favorite artists and they keep it movin'. On top of that, you also had major artists who simply didn't sound like they records whenever they were live. If you gon be boppin' around like Ms. Janet Jackson then yes, lip-sync. If you gon be standing in one place singing a ballad then you need to sing live. Things sorta changed for my era because the late '90s/early aughts era had some decent singers. ★NSYNC (Justin & J.C.) could actually sing. The rest of them sounded awful. Christina Aguilera could obviously sing. Backstreet Boys, 5ive, etcetera couldn't sing, but the music was jammin' (provided you were of that demographic). I knew they couldn't sing, but guess what? I didn't give a fuck at all. I listened to the music, didn't put too much thought behind it and moved right on to the next one.
With the amount of choreography they did, you'd think people would be more understanding about the lip syncing. Edit: wrote this before I saw the fans clips.
They were even founded by the same manager named Maurice star. It angers me so much that white artists are able to be successful by copying our style and music.
@@asdfghjkl3003 And I just noticed to how New Kids got MORE attention than New Edition despite the fact Edition had a much better catalog of music. Like damn lol
@@y2kpopofficial They were good as a unit but not as band for the most part lol However, their 2008 album (Block) made you want to take them seriously but unfortunately they got overshadowed at the time.
The New Kids are far better and the best boy band in history, no other boy bands before them beside the Backstreet Boys. Come close, not even One Direction. One Direction was a squeaky clean boy group, nothing wrong with that. Maybe that’s not their fault, but their music don’t really bring. Anything great on the table. Unlike New Kids did, all of 1D music and albums sounds the same. Maybe except their last album was a little different, but they still the same. Plus, I wouldn’t say they didn’t make great. They have good and awesome music, it just like every groups and solo artists, they just starts to slowly losing their audience. That really nothing new
I love the New Kids but if you are going to compare them with the Backstreet Boys, BSB will always be better. All BSB members can sing and dance. In NKOTB, only Jordan is the legit singer. Also, BSB is the best selling boy band of all time and the most successful one. Their Millennium album is the best selling boy band of all time. Their debut album 'Backstreet Boys' is also the best selling boy band debut album of all time. NKOTB may be the OG white sing and dance boy group but BSB, which is the second boy band during that time, will always be the best
@@Pirikaprililala I never said or compare that BSB were better NKOTB or NKOTB were BSB, I was just saying no other boy band like 1D would be like NKOTB/BSB.

I'm a big fan of New Kids on the Block and probably will continue to start like forever. One of my favorite boy bands in the late '80s early ' '90s
I've got nothing against lipsync. It can help prevent voice problems from overuse, nodules, tiredness etc. If you're miming to your own voice. I get it.
Lipsyncing to someone else's voice like Milli did - then hell no!!
They don't get overused. That's an ageist trope
I don't know why the later boy bands were more successful.
pioneers yeah if New Edition didn't exist
I still listing to them till this day this my childhood boy band
So the tiktok fboys style are obviously inspired by nkotb
Ngl as a 20 year old, I have never heard of them before.
I’ve seen them 13 times since 2009 since they reunited
….🧐🧐 no other show options available?
@@maryperry6573 your mom wasn’t available
Maybe u should do a video on Tiffany or Debbie Gibson musical careers cause I have no Idea who they are
New Kids On the Block was nothing more than the white version of New Edition
See my post above on how they tried to overcome that in 2008 but got overshadowed by acts like Justin Timberlake.
@@darnellmajor8895 nkotb was just as good as new edition there’s no comparison
@@y2kpopofficial They were good as a unit but not as band for the most part lol However, their 2008 album (Block) made you want to take them seriously but unfortunately they got overshadowed at the time.
I saw NKOTB on their Mixtape tour this past June, and they didn't lipsync at all.
30 years later, the new kids could still sing
Yesterday I read an article about this and how Maurice Starr wanted them to appeal to Black people.
@@DinoTechTurboCharge I though you said NKOTB is the best boy band in history. While NKOTB is the OG white boy band, still it's BSB who is the rightful to be called best boy band in history since they have numbers to prove that
Did you really say they haven’t released new music since 1994?! I guess “The Block” from 2008 never happened then? Or the new material they released as NKOTBSB in 2011? Or “10” in 2013?
No. I didn’t say that. What I said was the last album they released (in the 90s) was Face The Music
I thought face the music was their best record
You should have a video about the Arsenio Hall show
Oh leave them alone worry about your own damn self
Oop-
I had no idea Donnie Wahlberg came from this
New "you no what im sayin" kids on the block 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I WAS I N LOVE WITH THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK I HAD THEY PIC ON MY WALLS DOLLS OF JORDAN AND JOE I LOVE DANNY JOEY JORDAN JOHN DONNIE DANNY THEY WERE THE BEST STAR , LOVE THEM I HAD THEY CDS TAPE JOEY CD ,
Yeah. The lack of any truly good vocals made the lip sync allegations hilarious.
Joey and Jordan were (and still are) the only ones who could hold a note. I think they did a lot of the backgrounds on the recordings too...
.
“The lack of any truly good vocals” my ass
Not surprised
I was a boy that was a fan. When 2008 came and the reunited I was not interested.
How ironic that this video was made and downloaded either by a bar or the person that did do it used automatic ai bots and real New Kids fans are more than *three decades* older Google and the internet itself!!
