You HAVE to do an update on this. Sorry this was longer than I meant it to be lol just super fascinating.
I felt that when he said that people think he’s covering another artist’s song when really he’s the original maker of the song. Because ppl in my generation never realize when a song is covered or sampled. Like there’s sooooo many popular songs that are covered or sampled and they think it’s original. For example, Take Your Man by Salt N Pepa is way better than Take Your Man by City Girls and Say My Name by Destiny’s Child is way better than Playing Games by Summer Walker
I disagree w the summer walker part. Say My Name will always be #1 and no new song coming out will take that away. That being said I feel ‘Playing Games’ is a great song on its own and shouldn’t even be compared. She is a really great artist and has done it justice imo, much better than some of these new songs coming out with pop remix versions with no life in the music but idk that’s just me
Sheena Easton had some of her biggest crossover hits without Prince's involvement. Morning Train, For Your Eyes Only, We've Got Tonight, & The Lover In Me are just some examples of huge US hits released that had absolutely no involvement by Prince so minimizing her success by making it seem like she was bigger with Prince is absolutely incorrect.
@@daniellesienat2495 Exactly! Especially when you consider that Prince actually wrote two very unsuccessful songs for Sheena (101 & Eternity). So only 1 of the 3 songs he wrote for her even become a hit.
Exactly! I remember she had some big hits in the early 80's before she had anything to do with Prince. She did the theme to a James Bond film before Prince for crying out loud. Do a little research.
I remember this era (early 80s) very well. Sheena Easton was bigger than Prince for a short time. Then she made a record with Prince, and disappeared. He ‘blew up’ with “Purple Rain”. He did have records and songs before that, but became a superstar from “Purple Rain”. It seems that this video missed half the story.
Prince wrote Manic Monday, and gave it to Susanna Hoff who sung it for The Bangles, but she says he wrote it for her and tried to use it to get 'close' to her if you know what I mean. 🤨 She said it made her extremely uncomfortable because she was soooo much younger then him. But she used it anyway because they were still trying to get big, and the song was great, plus the connection to Prince could help shoot them up the charts. Which it did. He definitely had a "type" because Hoff looks just like the vanity 6 chick, but h*ll they all look very similar.
Re "industry covers" right sooooo the payola of the 1950's and 1960's black artists would record a song and make it popular on local radio and a white group would re record the song and make BANK for the record company. Evidence: "two silhouettes on the shade" record by The Rays and re recorded by Herman and the Hermits. Burt Bacharach did it too but then also re recorded black groups songs with black women singing the track (I'm you're puppet). Prince was very aware of the monetary prejudices and the hard time black artists faced getting credit and paid for their work.
Prince wasn’t biracial, that was something he implied through the purple rain movie, most likely to try to seem ambiguous and appeal to both black and white audiences. Not that I blame him, it was hard for black artists back then to cross over. Both his parents were black but light-skinned though.
When i was a kid I thought the song "Sugar Walls" was literally about candy on walls, until i became an adult & realized what the song really was about, & when i think back, my parents allowed me to sing this song loud throughout the house & in the car, like it was ok...lol & I still play the hell out of "Nasty Girl"until this day, that's my song #80sKid 🙌🏾
Do you really know these things? It doesn't seem very well researched. Sheena had quite the career before Prince and Vanity, my personal favorite, had quite a career after Prince. Appollonia played Vanity in "Purple Rain." It was reportedly based on their love story. Vanity left before the filming and went on to star in several films, including the cult classic "The Last Dragon" as well as recording a few solo albums. If it had not been for drug addictions, she would probably had become a superstar. While she didn't necessarily have the best musical skills, she had the most star power of any of his acts. And no mention of Wendy & Lisa and Carmen Electra?
Prince was sexy, sensual , charming , funny, talented , stylish, creative, artistic , otherworldly , bad-ass, intelligent , out spoken , maverick, uninhibited, ethereal , spiritual, an enigma, humanitarian , unique and a SOUL BROTHER. He will always be in my heart💜. No one will ever compare to you PRINCE💜
So weird I actually met Vanity at an Alpha Phi Alpha function she spoke at years ago. I was like 15yrs old. I honestly didn't know who she was and someone told me she was a friend of Prince or dated Prince, something. My God her skin was flawless. She looked like she did with her hair pulled back in the clip. Absolutely one of most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I had to tell her and she politely said thank you. Very good aura.
A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF AN INDUSTRY COVER IS WHITNEY HOUSTON “ I’ll always love you” . Remember it’s a Dolly Parton song and whit covers it but not much people know that the originally is dolly. I understand what prince is saying. The original loses value.
Whitney, technically stunning performance. Dolly, a heartbreaking and emotive performance. I'll take emotive performances over technical ones any day, every day.
I like both of their versions. Whitney could sing any song from her heart as if she wrote it, I don't know how she did that but she did. And I know the story behind Dolly's version so that's why I love it. I just have a different feeling when I hear both of them, but I love them both.

in my honest opinion- Prince's version is the best because he wrote it and he truly felt the emotions he put into the song. The next best was the Family, the group it was given to for their debut album in 1985. St. Paul Peterson took advice on feeling the song. Paul said he thought about his girlfriend (now wife) and the emotion just encompasses his performance. He's still married today to his girl from those days.
*Correction:* Sheena Easton became the first and only recording artist in Billboard history to have a top 5 hit on each of Billboard's primary singles charts: "Morning Train (Nine to Five)" (pop and AC), "We've Got Tonight" with Kenny Rogers (country and AC), and "Sugar Walls" (R&B and dance). Her other hits include the James Bond theme "For Your Eyes Only", "Strut", "U Got the Look" and "The Arms of Orion" with Prince, "The Lover in Me", and "What Comes Naturally".
Prince and Vanity were truly star-crossed lovers and I truly believe Prince went in to shock from grief of losing her and inevitably lost the will to live before overdosing. His behavior prior to his death was very strange. In an alternate universe somewhere theres a Purple Rain with the two of them instead of appolonia...
It was night and day after she passed. Before she died he was all jokes and carefree on Twitter. After she died, he got harder. A little meaner. He was different.
Great video! Prince was such an interesting artist and person, he literally gave zero fucks which made him a rarity.. It’d be great if you did a part 2 to this cos one of his protégés Carmen Electra was someone who he truly believed would be a pop star but despite having a great debut album all produced by Prince ; Carmen’s music career never took off but they did remain friends. Also Martika was somewhat of a protege as well, working on several songs on her sophomore album.. there’s A LOT to cover. Thanks for the video! 💜💜

Intimating that Sinead O’Connor was a ‘flash in the pan’ is a bit rich. I guess you had to be there, not just reading other people’s interpretations of the time. The narrative around Prince is changing over time

She didn't fully make it in the states because she ripped up a picture of the pope as a political statement against child abuse in the catholic church which was unchecked for decades. Which I actually agree with but it was bad career decision. Even though she has struggled a lot with mental health her career has been lengthy. Just not in the US. I'm a fan of hers and Prince from Ireland 😅
this video is incorrect on Sheena Easton. Sheena Easton already had several top 10 singles in the US before collaborating with Prince and even won a Grammy for Best New Artist. Hits include a cover of a Dolly Parton song. Morning Train 9 to 5, the James Bond there, For Your Eyes Only, We’ve Got Tonight, Telefone.
Sinnéad O’Connor knows she isn’t famous anymore. The only reason she ever became famous is because she stole ‘Nothing Compares 2 u’. She’s just using Prince’s name and spreading rumors about him because she wants attention and she knows she’s not gonna get attention if she doesn’t use Prince’s name.
Mariah Carey also made the mistake of covering a Prince song for her "Magna Opus" album Butterfly. She did The beautiful ones and wanted to surprise Prince with it. She was the surprised one when he told her that he hated when people covered his songs, she never performed that song live and when he past away she said in som concerts that she lost a friend but she did not know he hated covers so she would never perform that song live and dedicated One Sweet day to his memory instead

@@meccamorphosis2782 Susan & Brenda were not replaced, only Vanity was with Apollonia hence the name change. Also Apollonia is iconic in her own right too
Apollonia 6 was a replica of vanity 6 Morris day who was working with them at the time even said it. Prince had Apollonia dress like vanity to fill in her spot he also made her act like vanity in interviews etc. Apollonia career came from vanity leaving purple rain.
@@vminajj1267 I know that, but what I’m trying to say was that Vanity 6 & Apollonia 6 were the same group members (Brenda & Susan) but a different lead singer. It was the same group except one had Vanity & the other had Apollonia & the group name was changed according to the lead singer’s name. But you are right, Apollonia was made famous because she replaced Vanity. So with that being said, the group was technically not a replica, it was the same group with a different lead singer
Remember when Prince covered the 'The Best of You' by the Foo Fighters at SuperBowl XLI? They got paid from the use of the license just like he has been for all the covers of his songs. It's just part of the music business. Nothing wrong with that.
In advance of saying this, know that I loved when Prince and Sheena Easton began working together. However, Easton had hits in the US for several years before Prince's involvement, including a number one and several top forty hits. Prince's collaboration was in the middle years of her success here, and I LOVED it because she'd had such a squeaky clean before and he pulled her away from that.
As a fan prince In my own opinion I’m always giving so much more respected and honored to him as a artist by the whole entire music industry to in the very stronger way that he just feel so happy of listening to his songs and watching video music, but just to say I don’t care about what people think about him prince is always my favorite amazing icon music artist forever. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Prince was like 5 ft tall. Thin as h*ll. Weighed less than my purse. And wore high-heeled shoes. He's not intimidating. His talent was. White women going over to a single Black man's house, late at night, alone, gets into a fight, runs through the woods tripping and falling, ringing doorbells in the early morn hoping that someone would save her from the big Black man that is chasing her. Seen this movie too many times.
Wait, Sheena Easton had a lot of success in the US outside of her work with Prince. She had several top 10 hits. Her song 9 to 5 Morning Train was a #1 hit in 1988, her only #1 in the states long before she worked with Prince. And also had a top 10 james bond song in 1983 (forgot the name of that ballad), and the Babyface produced new jack swing #2 peaking hit “The Lover in Me.” You should look at her hot 100 history, she had much more success outside of Prince in the states
"Industry Covers" refers to the fact that record labels/ A&R can have a song in their catalog (master recording under contract) and have a new or upcoming artist they feel could create a profitable cover of the song, they can do this without directly asking the composers/ writers of the song. These covers are usually done publisher to publisher through a licensing agreement via a firm (HFA). The original artist does not have a say in who can cover their original work, this is something usually indicated in the artist management agreement signed in connection with their deal.
I agree with your comments about Sheila E's early music with Prince, it was just too much of him in her songs However, Sinead O'Connor, was not a protege, she simply did a cover of his song and unfortunately for Prince, the cover song was actually better than his original version.

You HAVE to do an update on this. Sorry this was longer than I meant it to be lol just super fascinating.
Wendy and lisa, Carmen Electra, etc yeah he left out a lot.
This!! I love Eryn and Snoh😍💕👏🏾

You left out MARTIKA. She was also linked to prince as his protege.
I was going to say this. You beat me to it!! Lol...she was already a star. People should do better research. 😊
@@daniellesienat2495 Exactly! Especially when you consider that Prince actually wrote two very unsuccessful songs for Sheena (101 & Eternity). So only 1 of the 3 songs he wrote for her even become a hit.
I only know Morning Train and Sugar Walls. So those other songs are a blank page...
He did have records and songs before that,
but became a superstar from “Purple Rain”.
It seems that this video missed half the story.
Prince wrote Manic Monday, and gave it to Susanna Hoff who sung it for The Bangles, but she says he wrote it for her and tried to use it to get 'close' to her if you know what I mean. 🤨
She said it made her extremely uncomfortable because she was soooo much younger then him.
But she used it anyway because they were still trying to get big, and the song was great, plus the connection to Prince could help shoot them up the charts.
Which it did.
He definitely had a "type" because Hoff looks just like the vanity 6 chick, but h*ll they all look very similar.
All the girls were similar after Denise
Faye wow thanks for letting me know i had no idea, I had read it in a book yearssssss ago and just assumed it was true. I edited my original comment
Omg yes! All of this! 🤣🤣🤣
He forgot mayte too
Agree.
I'm sorry but Snead's story about fighting with Prince sounds fake.
I agree and Sinead does have some issues so it’s not far fetched to believe she would make that up in her head.

Vanity’s Wild Animal album is one of my favorites. It’s a shame she wanted nothing to do with her music legacy anymore. She was really amazing.

There are so many more ladies and a few gentlemen too that named him as a mentor.
He named Willow Smith as one of his favorite young artists, along with Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar, who performed with Prince at Paisley Park in 2014.
So happy he gave us Sheila E and Vanity
Sinead is known to be batsh*t crazy. I wouldn't put much trust into what she claims. Smh
Idk Prince wasn't exactly a saint
Yup, Sinead says every man she comes in contact with abuses her. She is bi-polar or schizophrenic, maybe both. The paranoid delusions come from that.

“Compares…” is better for Sinead. The Family version sounded horrible. Chaka Khan is just a legend in her own right.
U are a lying.
Sheila E plays drums in Michael Jackson's Don't stop till You get Enough. There is a video on RUclips of her showing us how she thought of it. She literally did it with glass bottles, that is the sound you hear when you listen to that song.
in my honest opinion- Prince's version is the best because he wrote it and he truly felt the emotions he put into the song.
Her other hits include the James Bond theme "For Your Eyes Only", "Strut", "U Got the Look" and "The Arms of Orion" with Prince, "The Lover in Me", and "What Comes Naturally".
oh my god vanity 6! denise matthews was gorgeous
I don’t believe anything Sinead O’Connor said about prince.
agreed, 100% wouldn't believe a word that came out of that woman's mouth in general
Yup
@Sparkly Heaux yup

@honest 10:32 the lady next to vanity is not susan. It’s apollonia another one of prince’s protege.

@@CDGalore that’s because sex shooter wasn’t their hit. Vanity 6 did the exact same version. Apollonia was a replica of vanity they were both beautiful ladies and important to prince purple family but Apollonia was only famous because vanity quit purple rain and they needed a replacement

Mary Jane girls came out after vanity 6 if I'm not mistaken.
Intimating that Sinead O’Connor was a ‘flash in the pan’ is a bit rich. I guess you had to be there, not just reading other people’s interpretations of the time. The narrative around Prince is changing over time
It sure is! People who didn’t live through it just don’t see it nearly the same.
Exactly! Lol She has made numerous albums since and is loved worldwide.
@creatrixZBD “the narrative around Prince is changing over time” exactly! Mind boggling.

He is everything, he is amazing and beautiful. I adore Prince!
Prince also worked with male former teen idol Tevin Campbell (aka Powerline). He wrote “Ssshhhh” and “Uncle Sam”.
Oh my god, this was such a pleasant surprise! Thank you 💜💜💜💜💜
Mariah Carey also made the mistake of covering a Prince song for her "Magna Opus" album Butterfly.
