I truly enjoyed this speech. It makes me question my own motives and desires of everyday life. I was really caught off guard with the last question about how technology distracts us from our own thoughts and ideas. We are constantly inundated with sensational news headlines and useless TV propaganda to gain our attention from ourselves. As a result, we have become listless and lazy human beings. I myself have been guilty of this phenomenon.

Well , I wanted to know more about Mr Botton and I put his name in Google.
I learned that this man does not need to stand on stages in Seoul and otherwise to
teach us happiness : how could I become 60 years old without knowing anything about him ?
I'm 70 years old and I have the same question.
The question and answer section was fascinating and illuminating.
Not only solving this issues, but knowing that you made someone else's life better, and not for the sake of money. The question is l, would you share your wisdom and enjoy your job, TRULY, if you weren't given money for it.

@ 13:20 well, not every country is the same, I have seen crowd queuing by -20deg in front of Moscow' theatres to listen to actors reading Alexander Pushkin' poetry as if it was the premiere of Star Wars. In France the philosopher Michel Onfray has gained huge popularity with his "University Populaire" and is invited to a growing number of TV shows despite being criticised by the intelligentsia. More people are looking into philosophy and culture to seek meaningful answers to furthering human happiness, seeking any experience available that are useful to the deepest part of our individual, our soul, our life journey, wisdom, everything that is connected with our emotions. Hence the success of your School of Life. Wisdom is going progressively out of the cave, well let's hope. Great talk anyway.
I agree. I find great confort in music and found many answers to my questions in books. There may be better ways to find "the meaning of life" but we can`t deny culture`s power.

Never saw this one. Seems like Alain keeps approaching his points of humor, but then gets like no reaction as he would from Western audiences. You can kind of tell he is trying to phrase things slightly simpler for better translation. Interesting to see.
Never mind if a philosopher commercialise his knowledge. I am getting it for free! I guess his is changing a lot of money every time he says "Samsung" or "School of Life" but that does change the content of his speech and the money won't make him free of daily life challenges as himself is stating.
The preeminent goal of philosophy should be that of encompassing a maximum of epistemological concepts through logical deduction with a minimum of hypotheses or axioms. That is, to take all of the philosophical isms out there and create the understanding of them all by the usage of one hypothesis or axiom, don’t you think?

why are humans so desperate to find an alternative to God's wisdom? It baffles me that people are lost and they still refuse to look to God. Alain recognizes the efficacy of religion and the religious path in making our life better, and yet he refuses to accept it. It reminds me of my teenage sons. Perhaps humanity is a teenager, having moved from trusting and obedient children to rebellious teen (renaissance) to an older teen/young adult trying to remake the world on their own terms? Maybe there is hope : eventually people grow up, and so too will humanity.

Dear Mr. Botton , I believe you have chosen a wrong "teacher" , religion for changing the world for better! I don't think anyone think about the Christ and his humanitarian aim when celebrating his Birth Day!!! And there are thousands of examples for the religious failure !! The root is somewhere else and you know it , so Does Michael Sandel!!!
because he doesn t know what he is talking 'bout. He doing business that's it. "Culture will save us". Of course. We said the same thing with religion, but religion didn t. We said the same thing with technology, but technology didn t. Now we re saying psycology/psycotherapy/art/literature/culture is going to save us. Well guess what... the problem may to be tackled from the inside of human being. And Intellectual Honesty. The Asian world (Koreans also) has always known that life needs philosophy to be lived in the proper way from the proper angle. That s why you have all those oriental religions. But they are more about phylosophies than religion itself (believing in someone or something). I call INTELLECTUEL DISHONESTY and the willing to make of everything a business.
Mr. Botton - I will skip all of the fawning over your brilliant, poignant perspectives on Philosophical issues, that have always plagued humanity and I suppose always will, as long as neurosis exist I suppose and the question of where do we go after we cease to live??? That is perplexing, and why if dead should one care where they are or are not?
So instead today I offer a huge step forward in evolved thinking, Ending human suffering and social issues in numbers unthinkable and the millions of ways that our society will benefit from a mature, practical and scientific issue, instead of the wacky world of Voo-Doo, rumors, media hype, public health scares, over opinionated ass-holes (that is also a genetic condition) and Psychics treating people who and need real help, and are vilified for asking for it
. I simply would like to ask if you have ever considered tackling societies biggest issue: Mental Illness or more appropriately coined recently "Brain Disorders" The medical community with the exception of a few Dr. Russel Barkley are as ignorant as any member of the general public who takes no interest in the severe impact it has on our societies, not to mention families, our economy and is the stand alone leader in populating prisons, the advent of some of the most ass-backward thinking concerning laws, policy and the incarceration of a population that self-medicates as it is easier than getting screened, diagnosed and properly treated. I heard a figure, 85% of our prisons are populated by individuals who suffer from ADHD or ADD and Anxiety disorders. What would happen iof 85% percent of the 28 Million were not in prison, were making healthy contributions to our society, our world....and paying taxes for Cheney's sake!!! When will the thinkers of the world see that the biggest problem facing us throughout mankind's history has been mental illness and with the proper scientific approaches could be today the easiest to solve. Is the sale and consumption of Methamphetamine and other street drugs a problem? Or is it just the most accessible medicine...that and alcohol, alcohol being legal and the most abused substance in the world. Drugs are not the problem, the pain of the suffer is. Although legal it is likely more difficult to obtain then most street drugs for a minor. I am not simply making a case for the end of the most ridiculous policy ever: "The War On Drugs" Americas covert economy!?! No, it is this, and I have to use myself as an example: I was a heavy drug user, I used drugs and alcohol to cope with a serious Anxiety disorder (The General Type,Existential and without topic, as well as severe social phobia coupled with ADHD and I was an asshole as well. In the habit of perpetual self obsessive worrying, I rarely took the time to consider there were people around me that were affected by my actions, words & deeds. By the time I was 24, Alcohol in excess was my crutch, at 30 add cocaine (do not misunderstand I did not abuse, I used and sometimes I partied...what the heck, I was fully immersed in a life style I would have shown little interest in if I was diagnosed and treated at a younger age....I was attempting to live. Participate. Develop tools to become a better person. Unfortunately these substances are short acting and obviously like alcohol and tobacco; Addictive. Then my son was diagnosed with ADHD, I was an idiot, I told the Doctor that when he became an adult he could make his own decision about taking what I thought were "dangerous" medications. Now. Why did I think this? Why is Rush Limbaugh allowed to breathe the same air as people who do not espouse their brain dead, brain-washing dogma on an unsuspecting public. The Media- Public Health Scare. Oh no Johnny has ADHD and now is taking speed to treat it, and oh fuck me, the Principal is squirreling away with some of his medication....oh NO our society is collapsing what ever should we do. WE can't let doctors prescribe Addreral to our children. Or can we? Is it Addictive? How long has it been used to treat this condition/Brain Disorder (genetic in origin, identified in the human genome project and traced back to mankind's origins. What are the dangers if the focus became perfecting the diagnosis, presenting a finite prognosis and with some experimentation leveling the playing field for those affected. For I can tell you some facts; Treated properly my interest in alcohol is so out of proportion with my previous daily habits as to be of no consequence, as is my interest in all other drugs, meth, coke, ovoids. Take away my medication and I will do what any human should do that wants to survive. Reach for what is available. When I say live, I mean it, we are all different, and I am sure that one in the proper circumstances and blessed with the right tools can survive, even prosper. But.But there is misery. AS for myself the misery is insufferable, I will lay in a room for a week, not eat, not bathe and lose all interest in socializing....obviously in that condition others interest would wane as well. But I will to survive, to get the opportunity to enjoy "my life" this one and only shot take anything I think will medicate me, and only will stop seeking if it leads to behavior I find immoral, unethical and without virtue. I do not care what or think it is anyone's business what I need to do to make myself "normal" but this brings me to the larger point, the humongous point, throughout mankind's history there has always been drug abuse, and take away popular street drugs and you have seemingly normal farmers in Iowa Huffing Glue, Gasoline....whatever. It is my opinion, based upon my experiences in the seedy underbelly of the beast, and living in the seemingly conservative world that the problem is not that the drugs exist, it is that people want to take them. Now there is such thing as a healthy casual user. But that is not the reason for rampant homelessness, inpatient facilities and over populated prisons filled with people that are serving ridiculous sentences because of an issue that they have, or to fill the needs of anthers issues. Non Violent Businessmen, filling a need in the market....as natural as Capitalism. And during prohibition as awkward and obtuse as cutting down Apple Trees to prevent people from making "Hard-Cider". In essence we need to focus on research to perfect the testing. It is available it is called an MRI. And with this we could eliminate the unqualified and rather uncomfortable work these unqualified Doctors stumble fumble, stutter and sputter through...they have no idea what you are talking about, they base there decisions on a check list called the DSM. After receiving answers that they form opinions on based upon the patients history, appearance and any other profiling tactic they resort to guess work...guess work...not science....WTF is wrong here???They are "Practicing" Doctors with 8 or 10 or 12 years of 'Higher Education" but they are basing there decisions from the way the wind is blowing (are more Doctors in the media being criticized for what=ever and are there impending harsh penalties that are as unjust as the minimum sentencing for non-violent drug traffickers? These decisions largely based on guess-work and it has created a general community of Physicians that are just....Scared Stupid...facing serious implications as society has accepted the scare tactics and no one "normal" yes there are some out there...I cannot imagine it. It's as fantastical as the idea of planning a church wedding, planning when your going to have children and planning for your future...but yet there are some people out there that do such things and these are the very same people who whine the most, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. They didn't go swimming in a Gene Pool with no life Guard. There Gene Pool is relatively healthy, what they do not realize is that ADHD? GAD any Bi-Polar spectrum OR autistic SPECTRUM DISORDER IS THE SAME AS HAVING A FAMILY HISTORY OF HEART DISEASE OR high BLOOD PRESSURE ETC. Admittedly I am passionate, but I feel my motives are altruistic, I am not being selfish here, I think the greatest gift we could give our future generations is a population of motivated, well adjusted, art appreciating and Happy humans, who will naturally gravitate towards good decisions at least after they get there libido and ya' ya's out. I apologize as I am a neophyte in all aspects of what I endeavor towards. Clear thinking. Well thought out narratives that effectively communicate the message, while not being betrayed by my prejudices and over all hatred for idiots, assholes the far right or any "late adopter" type thinking.Thank You for taking the time. I will now go light myself on fire in front of the Surgeon Generals office with this most convoluted of manifestos in a fire proof brief-case of course. Good Day.

He makes a dangerous statement here that encourages the tech industries now should manufacture a machine that helps human beings resolve their relational issues by offering such as a manuel. This signifies that technology can intervene in relationships between two or more individuals.. What a terrible statement of a businessman of capitalism.. It now attempts to make money out of people's disputes, arguments, quarrels, and a learning process of each other's differences.
However, human beings are not born after automatrons but before. Would this be a hint that human beings are that simple to look at a manuel for a problem solving. I am sure it might be temporarily helpful but it also anticipates more dependency on tech devices rather than developing our own skills that are based on who we really are.
Sorry, but you're only bright for making money using fantastic terms - education and learning, love and passion, creativity and bla bla bla so on.
Human beings and their heartbreaking or perplexing conflicts are not that easy to be solved with helpless aid of automatrons...

domzbu Science has rendered philosophy defunct. It is a quaint and antique pastime - like embroidery. Pretty, fun, but in our digital age of mini microchips, macro astronomy, and quantum physics... defunct.
