Deep breath....okay...I’m ready. You are going to teach this old dog a new trick. As someone who loves dpns and is perfectly happy knitting socks with them, I am ready for a new technique and I’m so glad you are teaching this one. Thanks for giving me permission to go easy on myself. Here we go!!!
I’m a HUGE don fan as well. But it is nice to change it up a bit some. And I don’t know what it is about toe up that always has me reaching for my circular needles. :) you can do this :)
I made my first and only socks with your and your tutorials with DPN’s, Chic Sheep yarn and size 5 needles. Now I’m ready to knit these! You are such a wonderful teacher! You make everything eat to follow and give the confidence needed to succeed! Thank your for all your do Marly!!
Dear Marly, Thank you for your patience to teach us and encouraging us to learn a new Technique. I have many repeats and frogging but your Tutorial and encouraging words motivates me not to give up.❤
I know this is from July 2020 but I have been watching sock videos and was so happy to find this. I have ordered the chiaogoo needles and am anxious to try the socks if my 75 year old brain and fingers will allow me to. This will be my first time for making socks but I love learning new things. Thank you for posting this in which you have done an excellent job teaching! Looking fwd to catching up on more of your videos. Thank you again.
I am about to embark on my first pair of socks. I have been watching videos all day, trying to decide which creator to go with. Looks like you win the prize. I have been fighting not to ever have to use magic loop, but trying to knit socks in the round with those shortie Chiaogoo needles (although I love my Chiaogoo sets!) and that dinky cable, well, just watching the videos for those makes my hands cramp. And the less said about 3-4 DPNs the better. I'm an older person who just picked up knitting again last year, after having learned just the basics in grade school (50 years ago). Thanks for the plain sock videos and the pattern! I figured if I could knit clogs, I could tough out a sock. My next milestone was going to be a sweater, but my sweater yarn seems to have gotten lost in the mail, and my sock yarn is here. My neighbor got me back into knitting, and now my house looks like a yarn factory exploded in it. LOL!
HI MARLEY THANK YOU SO MUCH TEACHING THIS SOCK TURTORIAL .... ITS VERY HELPFUL. YOUR A GOOD TEACH INSTRUCTOR.......YOUR VERY PATIENT THANKS . LOVELY SOCK PATT.........HAPPY KNITTING
Marly, I had watched every video you had posted during covid. I strayed from your channel for a few months to find new content. I have been struggling with toe up socks, never finding a tutorial that worked for me. Today I come across this video and I was reminded why I was obsessed with your channel. The details, the patience, organization, the break down from beginning to end, the video quality, and your passion that is always on 100% truly makes you the G.O.A.T. Thank you, you saved my sanity during this pandemic. I hope you never stop teaching.
Oooh, great video. Have just bought your ad free pdf on Revelry and am itching to start, but I'm going to make myself watch all the videos first !! So grateful for your tutorial x x
Hello Mary, I have not knit for at least 10/12 years 😁 & I also learnt to knit the old English Style. I tried Continental Knitting but I cannot seam to grasp it 😋 even though I am a right handed crocheter 😋 continental knitting is just too difficult for me 😋 Anyway, I am currently knitting my first Shawl & think it's my 3rd week 😁 I am enjoying it even though it's a slow process for me 💕 & I do want to try knitting socks, so hopefully I can start with these Socks 😁 with your thorough instructions I will hopefully be able to follow you 💜 thank you 😁 Erica x
This is so helpful. I started a pair of toe-up socks about 10 years ago, but as an inexperienced knitter, struggled with understanding some of the instructions, especially the heel. I gave up. Last week I found a video for a cuff down sock, and decided to try it, but I got extremely frustrated. I think I’m going to try your method... sorry that I missed your knit along.
Thanks for your comment to be kind to ourself. Much appreciated! Once I block my swatch and wait for it to dry I’m going to practice on larger needles with worsted weight yarn. Great advice!🤗
Hi Marly, so I just finished knitting my first pair of socks watching a different video. The socks fit until I binded off...groan. So I’m going to take them down and start the ribbing another time. I knitted on a 2.5mm circular and I knit quite tight. I think my biggest problem is with the formula and not really getting it. Funny, I actually used the same KROY sock yarn you had in the video, CLOVER. I found the yarn quite heavy, but I’m going to give it another go after Ive watched this video. Thank you.
OH also, I put markers one each sock, blue, green, pink and yellow. I put them in alpha order. I am never confused where I need to start or what I did last.
Marley your tutorial is brilliant however I’ve been working on this with you Stacey Perry and K I think your name is for at least two years and I haven’t gotten past the instep yet and I’m struggling right now getting from the toebox to the foot part but I watch your video over and over and over. I struggle with my arthritis and my skinny slippery needles and I haven’t given up just to let you know and I really appreciate your videos so much. Roz in North Hollywood, California 76 years old soon or maybe 77 soon I can’t remember but I’m still at it. Thanks so much.
Can you demonstrate how to connect those knitting needles you have in that pouch? I saw those in Michael's store but I don't know enough about them. They look nice.
I've been trying to knit socks for a few years. Slipping sts and picking them up is a nightmare. I've tried using a smaller needle and knitting on the tips of the needles, I'm knitting a pair toe up at the moment. I've just finished increasing for the gusset. The sts are nice and snug, so I knit across the first row of the heel turn, I reach the ssk and my sts start stretching and I have no idea why. I have undone so many socks and I'm about to undo another one resolving wraps is a huge headache for me too. I've watched so many videos I'm confused now.
Where can I get the heel 2 toe ruler? I ordered one from Amazon and it is huge!!! One side you can check needle dizes and the orher you can check hook sizes and it stretches the toe very wide. Not a yrus measurement. Help please!!
the length of my foot is 8.5 inches. so do i need to make the sock before the heel 6.5 inches? i'm not sure how to tell which number in the (parenthesis) in the pattern goes to which foot length measurement. Everything has been easy to understand so far! i'm 4.5 inches into my first sock ever, thank you for the instructions :)
I have been following you for a pretty long time. I learn to do Judy’s magic cast on. I’ve learned to do German short rows I knit very very very big and my sock is coming out to look like it’s going to fit Godzilla I don’t swatch because I don’t know how to well I know how to. I just don’t know how to read it and to figure out what I’m supposed to do with it once I’m thing finished with it, howeverI’m already using a size 2 needle how much further down a needle can I go in order to make a better fitting sock or do I use less cast on stitches? I’m so flabbergasted right now I’m not sure what to do first.
Madly, soooo love this video....love the way you teach and videos are soooo very clear...I am sharing this video with other knitting friends...I am unable to find a pdf pattern that I can download....thank you again and soooo looking forward to your next video of toe up socks... Please keep the videos coming!! Thank you🧶
As left handed knitter I get confused with the M!'s Since I am working the opposite way I am assuming I would deal with the Grandmother first? I guess I could just do it and see. but It would be nice to be just able to follow the directions of the pattern. PS I can do the magic loop. Nancy
Think about the lean of the stitch. Because a “right handed” knitter is working from right to left we do the right slanting/leaning increase first, whereas a “left hand” knitted is working left to right so they do the left slanting/leaning increase first. Does that help?
When I do the increase and go into the grandmother it looks like there is another bit of yarn underneath that stitch. I'm assuming I pick up the single thread of yarn only.
Just recently found your videos and you are awesome! You explain things so clearly!! Could you do a tutorial on how to do a baby raglan top down sweater with a motif added along one of the cardigan front sides? I can't really wrap my head around how you go about adding in a motife such as a sheep in the Bebe Chocolate pattern on Ravelry. Thanks!
I’m using speckled yarn and like the colors on needle 2/sole stitches better. I haven’t done any shaping yet, so is it possible to change needle 1 to be sole stitches and needle 2 to be instep stitches? If I just knit 1 full round to change needle positions & move the start of round marker, it should be fine right??? Or is there a reason why needle 1 *has* to be for instep/needle 2 *has* to be for sole?? Sorry for the long question. I tried google first but just kept getting sock patterns. And this is my first sock/shaped garment (besides triangle shawls) as a self taught knitter, so I’m not 100% sure what I’m actually doing until I’ve already done it. ~.~
I am a little confused. When I watched a video on Magic Loop, the top needle was pulled out to start knitting the top. You pulled out the bottom needle. Does it matter? Also you showed the small cables attached to the needle, can you use the short cable to knit socks?
At around 20:25, the stitches being put on the cord are the stitches closest to us and the knitter, but around 31:54 the stitches that are being put on the cord are the one furthest from us and the knitter. Does this change the right side and wrong side of the work?
@@MarlyBird I'm sorry, but I still don't get this. What you said here is how I learned Magic Loop. But when you did the cast on and worked on the blue sample, you were always pulling the front (bottom) needle out to work the stitches on the back (top) needle, you continued to do it through the lifted increases, but when you switched to the green sample, you were doing it the opposite direction which is the normal Magic Loop.
Marly: I need your help. I'm new to magic loop and new to Judy's Magic Cast-on and maybe trying to get a handle on both at the same time is a mistake. I'm usually a pretty savvy knitter, but this is confusing the heck out of me. Here is my issue. In Magic Loop, once you have cast on the stitches and split them onto the two needles, you start by pulling out the Top (back) needle, and then work across the stitches on the Bottom (front) needle, basically resulting in working around the stitches in a clockwise direction (which is the same that would happen is you were knitting in the round as you normally would.) But once you've cast on using JMCO, to work the first round you pull out the Bottom (front) needle and then work across the stitches on the Top (back) needle, basically working in a counterclockwise direction. I've watched a bunch of videos and no one seems to ever point that out. As I was watching this video I saw that you continued to work in the counterclockwise directions when you started the lifted increases. However, when you switched to the green sample to better show the increases, you were back to working in the traditional clockwise direction, pulling out the Top (back) needle to work the stitches on the Bottom (front) needle. Is there some point where that switch just naturally happens? I can't wrap my head around it. Thanks so much.
Marly: I figured it out!!!!. I know I'm not great with spatial relationships. But I got there. It's that when you first do JMCO and the first few rounds, the tip of the toe is facing you directly, coming at you, but once you get going, you naturally shift the tip of the toe down, instead of at you. So it looks like you are going counterclockwise at first with a different needle because the needles are turned at a 90-degree angle towards you. Once you get going the work is shifted 90 degrees back away from you which then resembles the normal Magic loop. No change in direction, just the work shifted in space.
Question to Marly, I’ve been knitting for a couple years now, so forgive the question if obvious to some. Am I to understand that circulars are the 9” - 12” inch needles and the needles that are longer and connected are called magic loop and are not what knitters refer to circulars? I’m a big fan of Dpn’s, a fan tried and true, it’s what I learned on by following all of your KAL’s, socks, sweater, cheery slippers. Blessings to you and yours.
Hi there. You can use a longer circular needle in a way that is called magic loop. But the actual needles are still called circular needles. I’m am a huge fan of DPN’s too :)
I like to do two at a time, I have a huge long pair, what is a better length. the ones I have are quite stiff, the loops are always a battle, what is a good suggestion?
Question…I’ve never done sucks but really wanting to do this pattern. I’ve heard you should do both socks at the same time. Do you think this pattern would be a good one to do both socks with?
i have a question on the 9 inch circular. if my sock size is 8 or 8.5 in circumference, but the circular is 9 inches..does it stretch the stitch gauge since you mentioned we should have a tight gauge for socks. I bought one to try it out just knitted in the round. My stitches are much looser compared to the swatch i knitted using regular circular needles..
I’m sorry Marley but your website trying to find your sock pattern was almost impossible and I still haven’t found it yet your website is too confusing but I love watching you
Great tutorial! But how do I avoid gaps/ladders between the needles when knitting magic loop? I try to pull my first stitch tight so that the gap is closed but there is always a longer bar between the first and last stitch 😕
Marly, thank you for explaining how to make these socks and being so patient. I was wondering where you got or made the stitch marker. I have made others from your site, but really like these. Soooo enjoy your tutorials.
Marly Bird thanks. i watched your video more times to get it. thank you for all the detailed instructions. it really helped me since i have never knitted socks before.
I finally got the courage to try this project. So proud because I mastered the cast on. I’m going slow so I can understand the process. The question I have is I’m at the part in the pattern where it says repeat ends 1 and 2 until you get (68) stitches. Is that 68 on needle 1 and 2 or is it 34 on one needle and 34 on the other?
I wouldn’t use 100% alpaca for socks. Typically sick yarn has 15-25% nylon which makes them sturdier to wear. Also worsted weight will make pretty bulky socks - probably ok for wearing like slipper socks but not good to wear with shoes.
I made alpaca yarn socks. They were and I mean were as in the sense of being no longer wearable, so soft and comfy the 2 times I wore them. The heel got very fuzzy and then I forgot what fiber they were and threw them in the dryer!!!!!😬😢😢😢😢😢 I do think that the heel would not have lasted very long and agree that a nylon and wool combo is better. Maybe you could find an alpaca, nylon, wool combination.
You just did M1, You did not pickup the "bar" between the two stitches, you went in to the stitch below . Boy I am confused. The videos I have watch before, all tell me to pick up the bar. Which is right, or does it matter?
Hey Marly, was dealing with vertigo recently so I’m finally getting better and want to get started with the sock-a-long. Can you convert to double points once you start on the foot, etc?

Hi Marly...do you have a video on a viral stitch at all? Or plan on doing one anyone soon??
@@cbs70 I cannot wait until I get as adventurous as you doing 2 pairs at a time.
Me too I never found her pattern either
I watched your video probably 50 times I’m no further along. I think I’m hopeless but I keep trying.
Dear Marly, it's the first time that I can actually understand the whole process, wow, thank you❤❤
I'm so glad!

Love, love, love the extra info you always give! Teaching how to recognize stitches helps build confidence in knitters. The more confident the knitter the more enjoyment they get from knitting. Even finding it cathartic, which is a great health benefit. 😉

When you rotate the sock you always keep the stitches on the needle closest to you. I did the same thing at both time stamps.
@@MarlyBird I see it! Thank you! I really enjoy you KALs !
In Magic Loop, once you have cast on the stitches and split them onto the two needles, you start by pulling out the Top (back) needle, and then work across the stitches on the Bottom (front) needle, basically resulting in working around the stitches in a clockwise direction (which is the same that would happen is you were knitting in the round as you normally would.)
But once you've cast on using JMCO, to work the first round you pull out the Bottom (front) needle and then work across the stitches on the Top (back) needle, basically working in a counterclockwise direction.
Hi Marlybird from Washington DC
My family only uses socks that go to the ankles. Can you show where to start adding cuffs for ankle socks?
Do you have a toe up vanilla pattern for dk weight yarn?
How about a pattern/video combo explaining flexible pointed needles?
Once established knitting this toe up sock is it possible to do this 2@a time? Increase we don't have tow seperate circular needles?
Question…I’ve never done sucks but really wanting to do this pattern. I’ve heard you should do both socks at the same time. Do you think this pattern would be a good one to do both socks with?
How much should I cast on for medium size for toe u socks
with the circular needles size you don't say what mm? 2,5mm 3mm ? what is a size 2 in UK terms?
Can anyone help me find the free toe up sock pattern?
how to get your pattern. you are very good . i learned a lot with you
I have not been able to find your pattern
i have a question on the 9 inch circular. if my sock size is 8 or 8.5 in circumference, but the circular is 9 inches..does it stretch the stitch gauge since you mentioned we should have a tight gauge for socks. I bought one to try it out just knitted in the round. My stitches are much looser compared to the swatch i knitted using regular circular needles..
Good Morning
I’m sorry Marley but your website trying to find your sock pattern was almost impossible and I still haven’t found it yet your website is too confusing but I love watching you
Is the marker put on the first roe of straight stockinette or the last round right before?
Great tutorial! But how do I avoid gaps/ladders between the needles when knitting magic loop? I try to pull my first stitch tight so that the gap is closed but there is always a longer bar between the first and last stitch 😕
It is tricky. I pull my first 2 stitches snug as I start the new needle and that seems to do the trick.
Marly, thank you for explaining how to make these socks and being so patient. I was wondering where you got or made the stitch marker. I have made others from your site, but really like these. Soooo enjoy your tutorials.
Marly, is your Chic Sheep merino wool being discontinued? I am having a difficult time finding the Colorway “Poolside”.
Sadly, yes :(
Hi Marly having a problem I'm left handed. I really want to give another go. Where to go?
What is W&T
Thank you! 💞 Very helpful.
This will be my first sock. How do I make these socks in worsted weight, is there a way to translate this pattern for worsted weight yarn?
I went to your web site but can't find the free pattern!
I have never done German shirt rows can i sub the fishlips kiss heal?
I use fishlips kiss heel and think you should be able to substitute though I am no expert.
I guess we won’t get the pattern????
Will I have a hard time to follow if I hold my working yarn on the other hand
It at all. It’s the exact same action. I just knit with the yarn in my left hand vs my right.
In the written instructions, there is no description of the cast on? or have I missed it?
there is a link to the video showing you how to do the cast on.
68 total. 34 each needle.
I am confused? Do I have to buy 3 patterns??
Does anyone know if Cloudborn Alpaca Worsted Weight yarn is good for socks? I can't seem to find anything about it. Thank you :)
Either one will do, just be consistent. Try both on samples and you can decide which one you like better.
Hey Marly, was dealing with vertigo recently so I’m finally getting better and want to get started with the sock-a-long. Can you convert to double points once you start on the foot, etc?
Yup :)
