The word, "Liberal," is passed around as an insult these days, in America. Like it's some horrible, dirty, shameful thing to be. Go ahead, call me a liberal. I will take pride in such a label, and I have many reasons why! Currently today, the majority of conservatives are republican; and the majority of liberals are democrat. It wasn't always this way. And there is a current spectrum to still consider. However, for the most part, that's how it is today.
What people do not realize, is that "Liberals" are the ones who generally push for progress. They support freedom, equality, & people's rights! If you really care about being a free country, and look back on history, you'll see "Liberal" is a label to be proud of.
Lets look at a few LITERAL definitions, and see what they have in common, shall we...
Liberalism - is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty & equality.
Liberty - the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
Liberate - set someone or something free from a situation, especially imprisonment or slavery; in which their liberty is severely restricted.
To be a "Liberal," (by definition) is to broaden one's general knowledge & experience; as well as, be open to new behavior or opinions, and willing to possibly discard old traditional values.
To prove my point, here is a list of Liberal Achievements, that conservatives have only ever fought to oppose/destroy!
      1. Civil Rights Act 1964
      2. Clean Air Act
      3. Voting Rights Act (For both women & minorities)
      4. Clean Water Act
      5. Social Security (Which people pay in & earn)
      6. Child Labor Laws
      7. Labor Laws/Worker’s Rights
      8. Family and Medical Leave Act
      9. Freedom of Religion
      10. Separation of Church and State (Conservatives REALLY hate this one)
      11. Women’s Health Services
      12. Women's Reproductive Rights (Conservatives REALLY hate this one too)
      13. W.I.C.
      14. The Pure Food And Drug Act
      15. Food Labeling
      16. Right to Organize & Protest
      17. Freedom of Speech
      18. Also Amendments 13, 14, and 15
      19. 40 hour work weeks for Full-Time Employees (Meaning you either get time off or overtime passed that)
      20. Right to Due Process
      21. Americans With Disabilities Act
(I can go ON & ON...)
Some of the "liberal achievements" in our history were made by republicans who held liberal beliefs. It wasn't until the last couple decades or so, that the majority of liberals were considered democrats. Which has a lot to do with the right-wing media & the fear they have instilled upon those who support the republican party.
One perfect example, to make my case & point:
Abraham Lincoln was republican, but he was all about equal rights, and liberating the slaves... And yes, in his time, he was seen as a liberal! Yet he was a republican.
"As a nation, we began by declaring that, 'all men are created equal.' We now practically read it, 'all men are created equal, except negroes'. When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy." - Lincoln refers to the southern conservatives as know-nothings, and how their desire for owning slaves went against constitutional rights.
In other words, you can belong to one or the other party, and still have "liberal views"!!! Despite the fact that most conservatives are republican today, and most liberals are now democrat.
Again, being liberal is something to take pride in, if you support freedom, equality, and people's rights!!! Can't be "The Land of the Free" without those 3 things.

African American here and im always finding ways to praise you guys🙌🏾 i know a lot of African Americans have weird ignorant views of Africans but it honestly comes from that same "lets divide and conquer them" idea that was shoved down their throats by the media. My parents told me that growing up, the only thing people would show on the tv of Africa was poverty and white people used this to say "see! Arent you glad we saved you from that??!!!" Unfortunately a lot of black Americans believed it and raised their kids to believe it too. I remember in school, i would come home crying because some of the other black American kids would bully my African and Haitian classmates and i would try my best to stand up for them which caused me to get bullied too. I couldn't for the life of me understand why their parents didn't teach them to love their African classmates like they do themselves. Im soooo thankful that my parents raised me to ignore the media and to appreciate people from the motherland and to strive to always learn from and love all African people. My parents taught me that "if an African person speaks, you listen! Learn from them" And thats what i always did. I owe every single one of my black sisters an apology. I felt like black women were aggressive, loud, and masculine, and furthermore don't respect us black men considering that the women who date white men submit 100% to them and those white men don't have to act dominant, or aggressive to get that feminine energy out of black women. I also looked at how black men learned to call women bitches and disrespect them from black women considering most black children are raised by them, however now I've came to the conclusion that we all have been conditioned, and all of our ways as black men and women were passed down from somewhere. How can I blame a low income woman that keeps getting pregnant by different dudes and not valuing her private part and demanding someone to invest in her(family wise, and marriage)? We all have dysfunction in our community. It's jacked up on both sides and men and women are only going to do what they know. With that said, maybe I should spend more time appreciating the men and women who are able to escape that dysfunction and change the narrative, and to the rest I should be understanding as well as remember where I started and how it took 30 of my 32 years to break the cycle

Anne Omer ...you are so right. I bought his book Born a Crime...I am thinking about buying a few more to give as gifts. Trevor's world was crazy yet he managed to use what he could to make him the person he is today. I love how the women in his life had a huge influence on him. He may not have agreed with all of his mom's choices but at the end of the day he LISTENED to her. It meant alot to read that she had him look for his father...His mother made me look at my relationship with my son. I now talk with him and not at him. I now expose him to other churches and cultures. I got him an older wise tutor that will also have an affect in his life. I make an effort to add to our circle wise folks and folks who give love....More than anything I teach him not to see color but to see people....Trevor's book is an excellent resourse for parents or anyone who loves to laugh...

I think he finds it frustrating in general because most Americans including African-Americans don’t really know what goes on outside of their block. Most don’t know what happens outside of the U.S. It’s not the fault of Americans but it is the way the system is designed to only think of themselves.
So for someone who has travelled and seen and worked outside of the U.S. like Trevor who makes honest observations, I imagine it can be difficult on his part hearing the exact same level of ignorance constantly.
Being African-Canadian we are travellers and are privileged to live in a society where we know what happens outside of our block and country. I’m not say we are better and I know it’s a generalization but we tend to have a more universal view of the world.
