- Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #215
On this weeks episode I wake up at the very protected and peaceful anchorage of Pokai Bay. I make my way ashore and check out the town and enjoy lunch on an open veranda with a clear view of Triteia sitting under anchor.
I also visited the Kū'īlioloa Heiau that is just south of Pokai Bay on Kane'ilio Point. Kū'īlioloa Heiau is the ancient Heiau, Temple in Hawaiian, for Navigation and sea voyages.
Once back at my dinghy I found a note from the harbor master from the Wai'anae telling me I had overstayed the 72 hour time limit (this was only my 3rd day there). After speaking with him on the phone and voicing my concerns about the high wind event that was coming he allowed me to stay until the front passed.
After this drama was dealt with I enjoyed amazing snorkeling along and outside the breakwater at Pokai Bay.

Blessings for honoring this wahipana, sacred place. Yes you did the pono thing, by responding to the local authorities. Our experience when we first arrived was just that allowing them to know you mean no disrespect is a game changer and you will receive aloha.
You got giant balls bro, sorry about your mrs leaving, at least you still had the guts and courage to go on you own, I would be terrified, good luck for the future adventures,
haritio nelson is one of my all time heroes, even been on Hms victory twice in Portsmouth England
, what a ship, stood at the spot were he died, was very real and emotional, Your a brave guy respect
Thankyou, all the best, and keep safe, I'll be watching.
I know England's a long way and the weather crap here but wound you ever cross the pond (Atlantic) between our nations USA and England? I live next to the coast and Mariana, Bournemouth England, beautiful (in the summer)
Thank you so, so much for the video. It was full of great information. Back when I was in elementary school in the late 60's my father and I use to fish on the Man made rock wall... at the tip of the breaker wall. The harbor was so, very busy back then and it looked so, so different... as to now. There were so, so many boats in there... and fishing in those days... so, much fish to catch. Lot of old timers fishermen and everybody was so, respectful towards each other. I was born and raised Waianae, than Makaha. And in elementary school I fished the harbor alot with my dad. It has definitely changed... it looks like a entire new world. Back in the day the harbor was busy, busy, busy...
Be Safe, God's Grace Always too, you and his protection 🙏

No place like Hawaii. Best people in the world. Aloha. I enjoy your vids.
Man I admire what you do and how courageous to journey alone in that sailboat. Bravo mate, and thanks for sharing what many of us only dream of.
POP fishing and marine! The best place for gear to catch pacific ocean fish anywhere. I get gear from there for albacore and I fish off the Washington coast. They have stuff nowhere else in usa. Super helpful staff. Right off busy thourgfare should be easy bus trip. You're literally wasting time making other stops before going there. Pop dash Hawaii is web. Great content, glad you made it to the sandwiches.
What a great anchorage that was! I’m glad to know there’s still some of the original culture of these Islands and the people who carry it forward for the next generation.
I hope you found a safe harbor. The west side is getting hammered today. Makua is not gonna offer much protection. We can’t wait to see your next video. We have a SV in Wai’anae small boat harbor and spend many weekends in pokai bay.
Excellent James!, thanks for sharing your adventure! Cool you respected the Harbor master- nice he came around and looking out for your safety with the winds.
Hope that heart is heling bro!. just finished your September Video. absolutely amazing!
Taking it day by day 🙏🏻 thanks for following along
James I since flown back to Bend Oregon and when you crossed the pacific I was in Oahu the 22 thru the 29th Of September. I am so jealous but not for your problem you encountered with repairs. I found the sailing world of RUclips in 2015 after 6 month of rehab dual hip replacement. I want to sail so bad and travel Your channel is encouraging Stay safe and fair wind my friend
Nice video. thank you for showing that side of the island
simply beautiful
Great videos James. and thank you for sharing.
Beautiful, as always! Thanks for taking me along!! I'll keep reading my sailing books and watching your sailing adventures!
my goodness the water is just gorgeous! i'm so glad we still have such beauty on this planet. thanks for bringing us along for the ride as always :)
Amazing, loving the work you're putting in. Very Inspirational!!
Sailor James, I highly recommend that you read the book "Hawi'iki Rising". It's non-fiction and is about how Nainoa Thompson, master navigator for the voyaging canoe Hokule'a, sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti by reading the night stars/skies. Also, if you ever heard the phrase "Eddie Would Go", the book explains what that means. Aloha.
Boooo to red tape! But hooray that he lightened up when you called him! It is great to hear your real-time info on cruising in Hawaii as I plan to do my first offshore journey there next year. Thanks for sharing.
James your sharping the vids & the music is a kick… my brother is a long time mariner of All Oceans lives on Kauai. Sweet Video say the yeast!!
Just listened to the 59 North podcast with you from earlier in the year. Great story. I also toured Europe in the 90’s with my band.
I live in Hawaii, the west side is very popular and they can get overwhelmed with boats/tourists. Not to mention there is a military base not far from you, so that's why they regulate it. People would park there for months if they could, but Hawaii loves their views and discourages that type of stuff. Residents would live on boat if they could anchor a long time because it is so expensive on land :).
Awesome vid Brother!
Free range sailing is one of my favourites too :)
Thanks for sharing man! Great video.
Cursing the best side da Wes side !!!!🤙
I commented before watching the vid
Your a legend just rows up walks to the beach house
Hope you tried a salmon bomb
Nice free range shirt! I have a few of those! Stay being you James!
I would go fight the harbor master before I left hahah.. He is normally an a-hole. Also, I always anchor outside, no particular reason I just like it out there better I guess.
As always, stoked that you have the chance to get out and see more of Oahu and not just sit in the marina!
Cheers Captain James of the Drogues!
Thanks James, watching from Scotland.
Yeah yeah Paradise blah blah blah, hey what was the name of that marine supply store used sail place in San Pedro you mentioned to me. And of course I'm kidding I have nothing but admiration for your hard work and perseverance.
That place closed down
@@SailorJames sorry to hear I need a new head sail or at least some repair done on my existing. I think I need a sewing machine. Nothing new here except a 30 ft fishing boat went under in 40 ft of water so it was quite the operation getting her up and Charlie Manson is still rocking out till the late hours. Keep soaking up those Island vibes... you deserve it.
Hey James glad that you are supporting Free Range Sailing like me. Do you think you will make it to the West Side of OZ? Pascale and Troy are showing off some incredible place in that region you would love it there! Ben S/V DAWN
Oh yes I plan to for sure after New Zealand
I am local to Honolulu. Not sure if you fixed your ruder but if you need a hand fixing it let me know and I will make myself available.
Aloha
Chee hoo bradda🤙
Amazing content
Early access gang, whaddup ⛵️
That moment we realize we're in control of it all...
Thanks for the Vids Captain...New member here and I just wanted to say hello. Great visuals.TY
Fresh Sailor content, Let's do this..
Take advantage of the coming Kona winds to sail around to Kaneohe Bay.
Is that your boat that still here
Hey mate what size is your tender? Looks like you made it in ok
It’s 9ft (2.75 meters) , perfect size for my boat
@@SailorJames thanks mate I was looking at a 2.5m for my 25ft trailer sailer. Love the look of Hawaii, enjoying tagging along.
Your starting to find out what Hawaii is all about. My parents lived on Maui for years and Hawaii would probably be the last place I would cruise to.
They are extremely full of themselves over there.
Cry Baby!!! you no can handle, stay where you at, talkin about Hawaii people like you know um all, shame on you mahu!!!!!!
So sorry James no disrespect to you at all Brother!!! just this 🤡 thats bad mouthin my home and my people. Nothin but Love and Aloha to you bro. God Bless You!
LIVIN THE DREAM
-10 degrees in the Finnish archipelago (the scene doesn't even look real here either), everything is f r o z e n. Anchored for the next 6 months for sure.
Are u not scared of sharks brother?
Nope
🤘🤘🤘🍻
I think you should talk to the "sailing doodles" guy about a crew
Be careful diving, I see a big great white encounter over there
The great whites that visit these waters are females that just stop by, they have only ever been seen feeding once (last year) and that was on a big dead whale. I saw tons of White Sharks in SoCal when I lived there
Aloha my friend i live just up the street and was just amazed that you traveled for 31 days at sea. Msg me back ill bring you some delicious smoke meat! God Bless you Brother!⛵
it is to keep it like is and not over run with greedy people who only want to take advantage of the people and the beauty of the Aina
I feel like the fishes at ruclips.net/video/zLxgS-JoKeA/видео.html where possibly half hibernating or sleeping in a group
Liven free bro
Strange rules for such a dangerous and isolated coastline, they don’t want to encourage visiting yachts to the area?
Are you not afraid of pirates?
There are very few pirates in the world, the only real ones of concern want large cargo ships worth millions. The other places with pirate activity are Malaysia around that region but mostly just bandits in the night.
I live on west side Maui, can show you the best spots
