This song is called Joke because it was meant as an unserious, nonsensical song that showcased his talents and abilities to anyone acting like he can’t rap. Some people think if you don’t rap fast or over complicated beats, you don’t have ability. Some of his rap lyrics on BTS songs aren’t always hard hitting but they work within the context of a BTS song. This goes back to the taunts of “You’re just an idol rapper.” This was just his proof that even when he’s messing around, he can include flow switches, complicated beats, speed and wordplay and he’s still better than you. He’s like, MFer, I’m from the underground. *mic drop*

A lot of people say it’s a Joke and nonsensical but it is really an intricate diss track. It seems nonsensical bc there are so many double and triple entendres in Korean it’s hard to translate to other languages. So yes, while there are many jokes in the song, it’s more that RM is calling out his haters and telling them “you’re a joke.”

Same with Yoongi and the track AgustD. Full on diss tracks. About Daechwita, Yoongi said that it wasn’t about anyone in particular but if you felt called out that was your own fault and then he laughed. 😂

*9 flows, no chorus, straight bars!*
*Joke is a Masterpiece! BTW he has an IQ of 148 and you'll see why his lyrics always have double meanings. HE'S THAT IMPRESSIVE 🔥🔥🔥*
To explain why RM made this song :
So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy.. *Joke is an intelligent sattire for people who think rapping fast without any meaningful lyrics and flow is cool or good.* The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape...but simply the other rappers are making fun of him because he can't rap fast and only focus on lyricism which is why he made this song for them. he said "hit me" at the end to allow others to diss him again. but nobody did anything yet. King's shit. fun fact: RM was at one point one of the top students in all South Korea, boy is a GENIUS...
*In short, RM GENIUS SONGWRITER OF THE CENTURY.*
His rap is not only skillful but extremely intelligent. Makes me wish I knew Korean to fully understand all the wordplay and references.

RM was heavily criticized by several underground rappers when he debuted in BTS as an idol. Both RM & Suga were looked down upon by several underground rappers, with some even referring to them as girls for getting make-up done for performances. It was the typical "macho" bravado of some underground rappers, who were less talented than both RM & Suga. One of those who criticized them actually ended up in prison. The lesson here is: don't mess with RM, Suga, or BTS... You can try, but in 10 years since their debut (6/13/2013), this group broke numerous records all the way back from the Beatles. They have established themselves as one of the legends (whether you like their music or not), and these guys are just starting their chapter 2. They did all this not just simply bc they are talented, but bc they worked f***ing hard at it. RM has over 200+ songwriting credits, making him the 2nd & youngest in SK to reach this milestone. Suga is one of BTS's main producers but also is a producer for many artists in the Kpop industry. JHope just collaborated with JCole; JHope didn't even know how to rap until he was a trainee. And, the vocal line - don't even get me started on how talented those 4 guys in the vocal line are. BTS ARMY has seen these guys climb from the bottom to the top... and they've taken us on this whole journey with them. We are protective bc many people misunderstand them, have used them, or criticized them. This is a complex group capable of multi-genres of music. They are continuously evolving and never settling! I am a proud ARMY for life 💜 🫶

RM is a poet and a rapper and he started in his very early teens. He was attacked and insulted numerous times by many people and other rappers! They accused him of selling out and being gay for becoming a K-pop idol and becoming the leader of a K-pop group. All of BTS have been ridiculed over time…. Over and over for a wide range of idiotic reasons. Including their wide range of music styles and genres, to their literal style of clothes and appearance. They’ve had a hard road, and a lot of people in the entertainment industry said they would never make it…..So, you’ll notice the lyrics in quite a few of their songs and raps, that they have this chip on their shoulder or axe to grind feel! BTS are multitalented artists that don’t confine themselves to one genre of music, rap, or dance… they just do their thing!!!😊😊😊😊 I hope this helps a little!! THANKS FOR EXPERIENCING BTS!!!😊❤

After mockery and ridicule for years that his choice to become an Idol rapper meant he had forfeited the essence of hip hop namely the ability to speak his own mind, a rookie rapper being marketed by a Big 3 corporation lit into RM and BTS at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Both RM and BTS were ridiculed in a rap performance in front of RM's peers and a huge international tv audience. RM sloughed it off in the press but a few months later released Joke with the telling last line "Hit me". He had been slandered by elders but in an age conscious society accepting such a public slander by a younger would have been seen as undignified especially for a rapper. So rather than being a weak person who used the press to fight his battle, RM chose an underground staple, rap battle. Hit me is an invite to come back if you think you have better. The comeback never came but a few years later the rapper silently standing next to his CEO listened to his boss issue a weak mia culpa for him.

Hello! Technically speaking, the word "Hangeul" means "Korean writing" ("han" = "Korean", "geul" = "writing"). Hangeul was carefully designed and produced in 1443. Before that, Koreans used Chinese characters to read and write but since it was a completely different spoken language and was the written form was not phonetic, it was difficult to learn for most people. Hence the creation of Hangeul. The spoken language, Korean, existed for a long time before that.
However (!!) a lot of people these days, including Koreans, use "Hangeul" to also mean the Korean spoken language. It's not technically correct, but I hear it all the time, lol, so you might see it used for either the written or spoken language. Thought you might find that interesting!

They spew utter gibberish just get a name for speed when they are conveying nothing of any merit to listeners. Showboating at its worse in music. RM has no tolerance for people who call themselves rappers using this technique. He is schooling all it & showcasing their method. Killing it along with them as he surpasses them all using their method.

All of RM's work are based on deep lyrics that are thought provoking with a message but "Joke" is an exception. Joke is full of word play. This song was a slap to haters who criticized him and said that he can't rap fast or flow hard as "he had become an idol rapper" and said his rap was based on only lyricism and delivery and also mocked him for pursuing his career as BTS. Joke was his answers to those so called " rappers" who only spit words like 'bibidi babidi' (basically just saying any word that would go with the rhythm without having any actual meaning). Through Joke, he showed that he can rap fast but good rap ain't just about speed. Just being fast doesn't make it meaningful. It was a clap back to haters!

This, gentlemen, is the leader and main songwriter of BTS. He was what the group was built around. IQ over 140, with special strength in language and communication. He's been recognized in multiple areas as a poet, even in his general speaking word choices.
As for swearing, you will notice a group persona being a bit more restricted than their individual artist personas (not that they never swear in group music, it's just more rare). The group members must make compromises in personal tastes for the blending of their styles and voices to create the best blended group music. As individual artists they get the chance to explore their own styles and messages. I think they've worked hard to master that balance, but it's always fun to see how they surprise newcomers who mentally have them in a box. We keep trying to say, "they aren't just a 'boy band'" , but preconceptions are hard to overcome.
I think I agree most with HLC's take on RM's message💜, though it is of course open to interpretation.

    Hi, thanks for your reaction
The way that I see the song is that Namjoon is mocking the people that call themselves “rappers” when they aren’t real ones. It is well known that he, as well as Yoongi, was an underground artist and that he was being looked down at because he became famous as an idol rather than pursuing a career as a rapper. I think that this song is a way for him to tell them that no matter what path he took and how people perceive him as an idol, he is still a rapper and he has the skills that they don’t.
He basically laughs at them and at how pathetic they are, pointing out how different their leagues are and making them feel insignificant. He even brags about how writing the lyrics took him just a short time and that it is easy for him to do so. He is basically telling them that he knows what he is doing, that he is proud of himself and that he is killing it.
But It isn't just about dissing "fake" rappers and laughing at them: this song is a way to criticize a certain rap culture that he looks down upon
The song is comprised of wordplays with a heavy presence of end rhymes and lines that are not necessarily connected through each other in terms of their meaning. The track really showcases his wordplay ability and the technical aspects of his rapping skills
Rapper B-Free made disrespectful comments to Suga and RM in 2013 when he criticized them for becoming idols, as he didn't view idols as rappers
In the BTS discography, both as a group and their songs as soloists, you will find different styles and genres... you will like some of them and others you will not, and that's fine, I like 100% of their songs, although most of them do, but not all of them. I have them on my playlist... it's a matter of personal taste.
I don't particularly like heavy rap, I only came to like some Eminem songs or when, for example, some rock groups incorporated rap into their songs in the early 2000s. With BTS I started to like rap a little more, although I still preferring more the combination of rap with vocals, not rap alone, however because of the love I have for BTS as artists I have given myself the task of listening, analyzing and understanding their rap and I have learned to appreciate that musical genre more

This came out March 2015. That was a time RM was getting a lot of criticism for misogynistic lyrics. He has said he has old songs he regrets. I wonder if this is one of them since it is, in fact, misogynistic. Probably the only rapper ever to do this, he eventually started having his lyrics looked over by a women's studies professor as he became more enlightened. Mind-blowing. When BTS was still trying to maintain a tough image, he drew from the culture around him and the American rap he grew up listening to. It's no wonder he used these things as insults to burn critics and bad rappers. The song is a masterpiece of technique and wordplay. Looking at it as the work of a developing artist really opens up a lot to think about. You can see his brilliance, and also his lack of sensitivity. It's also really interesting to compare it to Ddaeng - another diss track the rap line dropped 3 years later. Compared to the Big D contest that is Joke, his language in Ddaeng is so sophisticated it's like the finest made sword. You don't even know you've been cut in half until the two parts start sliding. 😅

Y'all J-hope just dropped a Collab with J. Cole. So I think you might have to just throw the whole wheel away because at this point BTS aren't going to let you breathe when it comes to content. Especially, since Suga's birthday is March 9th (so you have to do a birthday reaction) and then right after Jimin drops his highly anticipated Face Album on March 23. 😭

Aww. You three “tough” guys introducing your dogs to us. RESPECT! I grew up in San Diego California during the 50’s to 80’s. My family was not military because the night before Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, my Navy father was run over during a black out and spent 18 months in various military hospitals - eventually landing in San Diego and returning there with our mother and us a few years after his “recovery”. He was originally from North Dakota, as were we. The military in San Diego: Navy, Army, Air Force. From the time I was 14, our home was visited by VERY young Navy men because the first of them was the son of a cousin of my mother’s from North Dakota (who had no contact with us at that time) and this cousin had encouraged him, being so far from home, to seek us out. He just turned up at our door one afternoon. Just imagine the loneliness, trust and courage he displayed! After that, we had years of young military men visiting us. God bless every single one of them!

@Tiger Teel, This is RM’s play on words Korean & English it’s more nonsensical it’s mostly to showcase his skills as a underground hip-hop rapper because that’s his roots nobody’s looking frowning a pot underground rap that is probably the most sought after type of rap that South Korea puts in high regards there are a lot of underground rappers who have join the K-pop scene! RM is showcasing his word play how he can take words from Korean and fit them into a English format and vice versa and if some of the references you don’t get it because they are Korean metaphors or comparisons that you are not knowledgeable of!
He is telling the haters yeah I’m an idol I joined BTS! I am working and you guys are still in the underground struggling that’s why your rap is lame and it’s always the same he’s pretty much dissing those underground rappers who talked shit about him and Suga for joining a K-pop group! Here RM is proving them wrong and you don’t have to rap fast in order to be good but here he raps fast to prove that he is good that he doesn’t need their approval he is who he is!
RM is a student of hip-hop he knows the ins and outs and the word plays both in Korean and Japanese, English he has the advantage because he knows how to take words from three different languages and fit them into a rhyme scheme and the flow is dynamic and that’s how he stays ahead of all the other rappers because they don’t have that skill! It’s extremely hard to take three different languages or even two languages and fit them in a sentence structure that makes sense or rhymes or has the same type of flow as it does in English and Korean! For example if you take an artist who is mostly Spanish speaker but that rapper can take English and Spanish words and fit them in the same sentence structure and have it flow & cadence work nicely!👍
There is no explanation for this particular song it will not break down each sentence and it’ll make no sense to you if you have the time and if you have the patience for it to be broken down now you can insert your own opinion on what you think it means but 9 times out of 10 you’re gonna be wrong! So do you wanna know the true facts behind each sentence structure ? It doesn’t matter! Technically there isn’t a total breakdown it’s just a play on words and Korean metaphors, His talent the flow because it sounds good and it doesn’t necessarily make sense but it definitely showcases RM’s rapping abilities !💜

Mannn hes a genius idk what else to tell u. The way he made fun of the how some rap (in this song) and twist it and still rhyme w it. Sigh. Man's a genius. Thats all. "Joke is a song I wrote with the flow of my consciousness. That's why the title is 'Joke'. There is nothing hidden in these verses, and the song is 500% for listening pleasure. I felt the need for a song that would refresh the mood without any particular meaning as I included messages and feelings in other songs. Here I added what I think are the 'skills' of rapping."
    - Namjoon for HIPHOPPLAYA in 2015.
The song is aimed at rappers who at some point messed with Namjoon. There was a controversy in 2016 where people started saying that it was meant to insult women because of the words he uses, but it's a matter of looking at the context and realizing that his goal is clearly not that. That's exactly why 'bitch' he uses it as a simple insult that doesn't mean anything concrete.
In conclusion, the song has a lot of meanings

OOF WHAT A SONG TO HAVE EARLY ON IN YOUR LISTENING JOURNEY. Definitely showcases his skill, talent, and ability at one end of the spectrum, that most people either forget about or gloss over, or try to discredit because of the "pop" and/or BTS group side. Tons of double-meaning laced throughout this, aside from the fact it's nothing but bars and multiple flows. Glad you guys enjoyed it a lot!
Edit: saying now as you continue the journey (if you do) that for some of the BTS rap trio songs, to also watch DKDK TV videos afterwards breaking down the meaning for some from a Korean language and culture context (songs: Bapsae (Silver Spoon), Ddaeng, and UGH!).

Swearing? Ummmm yeah.... he's a rapper dude. RM and Suga are from the underground rap scene. Of course they're going to go hard. You still have them boxed in as a Backstreet Boys type boy band who happen to sometimes do rap. If anything it's the other way round. They're rappers who occassionally do pop songs. They were originally created as a hip hop, not a pop group. It's less suprising about what they're capable of, if you stop thinking of them as a boy band and just think of them as artists.

Kudos on the identifying w/ Eminem's skill flexing! Nice call! About "Unni" if you are a dude who is full of yourself, would you like the girls to call you "big sister"? Nope. When taping one video, you might want to provide your own team with your full attention as they are addressing the guests you've asked to come by? I laughed at the comment on excusing b/c the commenter was rude and didn't like people like that, and that came before this. The fact that these get translated real time and for free for global fans is a gift. It doesn't hurt to ask for personalization to your needs but wouldn't hold your breath, Sir.

This wasn't specifically against one person, but rather the hip hop scene in general. If you guys remember, in their early days, RM and Suga especially got a lot of hate for being part of an idol group. Furthermore, RM tends to focus more on lyricism and a lot of his songs tend to be more mellow. So this is a response to the haters who said he wasn't a good rapper just cause he doesn't usually rap fast or "hard." The song is called Joke because not only was it made as a joke, but the quality is a joke too despite meeting the criteria of what the hip hop scene would consider "good." I think it's also why this song is so shockingly vulgar, to fit the image of hard hip hop. He ends the song with "Hit me," challenging the haters but no one has been able to respond.
