I think the lesson here is that you have underestimated the power of parallel lanes. They won't fix everything, but if you have multiple colors heading in the same direction, you can separate them into different lanes by directing each to a different exit and significantly increase both capacity and bandwidth. Lane changes are also less likely to create unrecoverable jams than intersections. You don't get any extra points for being under budget (though perhaps a mode where you do could be in the future), so you might as well use all the road you get!
It feels like the ultimate lesson of this game is, "If you're using traffic lights, your road isn't good enough." Which, you know is kind of a fun idea. Wish the dev included kind of a 'cheater' score which is basically just turning the car on no clip and drawing out the roads in the straightest lines possible. You'd never actually achieve it, but it would tell you the how close to the highest possible score you could get you are.
The problem with Traffic Lights in this game, is that it throws everything off. Namely it throws the TIMING off. The reason the high scores work without traffic lights, is that they created the map with the perfect time for all cars to never collide or occupy the same lane and area at the same time to crash. To give an example, The basic circle round a bout. The guy in the video, RCE, would set up 4 lights, at 3 seconds each, each car going at a different time, right? Except that is the WRONG way to do it! Cause if Car A waits 3 Seconds, and Car B Waits 6 Seconds, in the 3 seconds it takes for Car A to go onto the Round about, will be just in time to reach Car B and crash into Car B. And Car B traveling 3 seconds, runs into Car C and so on. If the Times were the exact SAME tho, the cars would be the exact same distance from each other. What you need the timers to be based on, is giving the very last car enough time and space to not crash into anyone. So if the car on the road the longest is car C, and it takes him 15 seconds to go around the entire thing before exiting the timer for ALL the lights should be at LEAST 15 seconds, so there are no crashes. There are, of course, issues with this, are you are scored on how many cars make it to their exit, this wouldn't give a good score, but it IS how it is meant to work. No, the way to a good score is finding out the Distance and timing of all cars, and making a map in a way that none of the cars collide, that the path each color car takes doesn't collide with people at specific times. So at total time, 1:11 Car A is crossing a lane into Car B, then the exit. You make Car B's lane in such a way, that car B never intersects with car A at 1:11 and any other time Car A intersects into their lane. This is a game about timing, and manipulating cars into the perfect rhythm to never hit each other.
5 minutes in and he finally realised that a) the orange and green cars coming from the bottom don’t need to interfere with the other traffic and b) there’s a huge space at the top of the screen to make a proper junction. Barely two minutes later, he’s putting a wrong way round-about in…
Loving the updates to this game. FYI you can now change the arrows on the entrance roads. You can also click on one of the car colours in the entrances to see which route they will take.
Can confirm about building a roundabout in America failing. We've had one in my town for quite a few years now and people still can't figure out how easy they are to use. Buddy of mine has almost been in at least 3 head on collisions due to some dummy driving in the wrong direction despite the numerous signs and arrows.
how does it feed? by that I mean where im from I have a fairly common roundabout that when you drive into it you cannot turn left without basically crashing into the center median so it forces you to flow to the right properly
@GamingGD5600 that's the part that makes it worse. You have to take a super sharp turn to go the wrong direction since it angles into the curve of the roundabout.
About ten years ago in my town they added one to a rather odd spot that didn't need one, (two lane road with the roundabout connecting a small turnoff that just goes to a backroad of sorts), and for the first couple of years there was a new set of tire tracks going straight through the middle every week. People finally figured it out, but with it being the only one in town and people rarely turning off on that side road it connects to, it hurts the traffic flow more than it helps.
@@Gamer3427 that's because in the US we don't use roundabouts to improve traffic flow, we use them to slow down traffic because they require far less maintenance then putting in lights.
Traffic lights lower the score because it's tied to the amount of cars that get to their destinations; so if you don't stop them you get a better score
On the last level, one of the things I know I missed, and seems you did as well, is that there's cars trying to get back to the same direction they came from. You did it in the previous level, and the Discord level did as well, by putting in another loop right as cars enter to be able to bypass the entire road network and return to the same entrance.
*@Real Civil Engineer* 18:00 -ish. What happens if you just pave the entire field (screw the costs!), Do the cars figure themselves out then? :D I also have a theory about, as soon as possible, sort out every multi-color lane into their "primary colors" lanes, and then just match each lane of equal color together.
What would happen if you just filled as many tiles as possible with road, would it just be garbage or would it actually work? Would be fun to see you test this👍
In the last level, his original design with only 1 lane (and the later one with 2 as well) was/were actually asymmetrical. The left "eye" of the circuitry allowed straight-aheads and turns, and the right only allowed turns onto the connecting road in the middle. This effectively makes the right "eye" of the dumbbell circuitry not quite complete and reliant on the left, clogging traffic up. Great video nonetheless, appreciate the work very much.
On that first one, for his design at 7:00 or so, why didn't he have the top lane take the uppermost part and the blue lane the lower, starting on that very first square? Finding a way to throughput the green/orange seems hard either way, but it'd certainly keep the blues and purples going just fine.
For the longest time, you've been referring to the pips of the the traffic light timings wheel as being one second, when it clearly states in the tutorial that each pip is worth TWO seconds. I am disappointed to see you still making this mistake in 2024. Please address this grave inaccuracy forthwith.
I bought this game yesterday and I'm loving it. I enjoy trying to find elegant solutions without traffic lights. I'm not good at doing that, but I'm enjoying trying.
A town next to mine is getting ready to get two roundabouts. One of them is more or a teardrop shape rather than round. I see many accidents in the future
22:22 Oh nice, the engineers finally conceived of a Bermuda's triangle but on land. If I ever see anything like that I'm driving off-road and on the sidewalks right there and then. There will be no rules.
I'm loving the new features in the latest update. I'll be getting this game as soon as I'm back on Steam... I need my new computer first, and I have to wait for it to arrive.
Know nothing about this game but use rotaries/roundabouts if they are availaable, standard intersections and grid layouts are prone to traffic congestion and accidents. Those things are very low in places with rotaries instead of intersections.

“I’ve literally built a roundabout in America.” Carmel, Indiana currently has the world’s most roundabouts, so I’d say we’re getting a handle on the issue.
America’s left side drive/ right side traffic came from the tradition of farmers riding the rear left horse and driving on the right in order to safely gauge the distance between large passing Conestoga wagons. Safety concerns being the basis of our “backwards” traffic comforts me.
1:52 why do the green and orange card have to go all the way up to the main road? Cant you draw a line between the buildings for them? 5:52 okay, you can only build on the grid (i see the grid now) and this is closer but still not the obvious optimal answer. 6:36 there you go.

Somehow drivers in this game cannot comprehend giving way for cars already on roundabout, but thousand signs are totally fine for them.
Yeah, not very realistic, they also need to not understand the signs.

Any reason, why u did not connect green and orange bottom cars directly with the corresponding rodes - without mixing them with the main stream?
