    I have the Canon AE1 and I preferred the iPhone for Landscape photos. The dynamic range it really good and with the presents on phones you can really make it look film like. But when you have a Human subject its AE1 all the way. The way the Film handles skin tones it's no comparison.

    • @topperharley7142
      @topperharley7142 4 года назад +2

      To be fair, normally you wouldn't use a 35mm camera for landscape in the first place.
      You would have to compare it to a medium format camera then.
      The 35mm negatives are just too small to capture that amount of detail to make it a fair comparison with a modern digital camera.

    • @WstawajGramy
      @WstawajGramy 3 года назад +1

      I think if he overexposed the film a bit more he would've had much better dynamic range in the shot. Not sure it would be comparable with iphone, but still. You have to remember, that it's not actually canon ae-1 vs iphone, but rather portra 400 vs iphone 11.

  •  4 года назад +20

    Impressing! I like the feeling that film adds to every image here. Although, the iphone 11 pro wins on dynamic range on every picture.
    That said, there is some room for improvement for the film setup.
    - What was the scan process? A dedicated scanner with multi-exposure will surely improve the DR.
    - A better lens, will definitely improve image quality
    - Better light metering. Some (a lot?) of the film pictures are overexposed.
    - A lens hood! The iphone somehow automatically deals with this, but the SLR camera does not.
    Awesome and very unexpected video!

      Oh, and the only other piece of advice I’d give you, is that in some shots on the AE-1 I feel like you’ve got sometimes too much bokeh. Especially in the skateboard shots, I feel like your subject was never completely focused, it doesn’t hurt to go off of f1.8 sometimes, and can actually also result in sharper images, depending on the lens. Overall though brilliant photos, keep it up :)

    I think we inherently devalue photos captured with a phone for some reason. My hypothesis is that its too easy and ubiquitous for it to matter. We also are familiar with the aesthetic of photos captured with a phone so we can recognize it easily. People generally don't consider moments captured with a phone to be expressive. It's also more technically limiting, intentionally, so that the barrier of entry is lower which means there is also less variables you can tweak to refine a photo. There's also the ML involved in post when the photo is captured in order to enhance the scene that kind of doesn't feel honest or believable.
    All these things are what's happening behind saying phone photos "doesn't have a soul". They might be better on a technical level, but they won't make you feel a connection.
    thanks for the comparison

  •  4 года назад +1

    Like some other comments, I definitely prefer the AE-1 shots. The iPhone shots are "too perfect", they have less personnality if I may say. Finally, the experience of shooting with a film camera is incomparable. If you really want to learn the basics of photography, you have to shoot with a film camera.

I think next time it would help viewers to know which settings you shot at on the canon since iphones tend to auto set at higher f stops to give that sharper looks (and let's not even talk about auto hdr lol) but it looks like you shot wide open almost always on the canon which gave some blown out highlights in a few snaps

    some of those canon shots - bit out of focus. im suspecting you used the program mode and it stopped down the aperture ; in manual mode you could have forced f8-f16 to get more depth of field and compensate by changing shutter speed down a bit - then they would have looked more like the iPhone shots in terms of focus and depth of field. another thing with some films - love one extra stop of light- others a stop less depending on conditions. on the sunny pics I'd have said they were a tiny bit over exposed. but on the foot shot - bang on as contrast on canon was better and colour saturation more interesting. if you shoot Ektar or E100 - the colour and grain is so good on colour shots.

    Canon AE-1 produces beautiful images on that Portra 400 film. There is so much character and a texture that you only get with analogue cameras. The tonal range is beautiful. You are producing 'real' photography.
    The IPhone 11 produces quality photos however, they lack character. They feel dull and clinical. You get an image, a snapshot in time but that snapshot doesn't carry much feeling. There's no experience to be had, it's doing a job but not providing a pleasure. Atleast not in the way the analogue experience can.
    Even Digital cameras lack that feeling.

    The main difference to note here is HDR in iPhone camera vs the natural & unbiased photos from cannon camera

      I use a 50mm 1.8 and a 23mm 2.8 and I have to send it off online - I use a service here in the uk called AGphotolab :)

    In my opinion the iPhone and Canon are both very good cameras in general. The iPhone of course is more easier to produce and store while taking some very beautiful shots. While the Canon really has a glow and nostalgic feeling to it I think its better at capturing the emotion more than the iPhone can but of course the film has to be produced etc so its less convenient.

    I think the AE-1 has more soul and captures on the more warm side of the spectrum. Nothing wrong with the iPhone at all tho.

    Hi, you seem like you'd know the asnwer to my question. I have an issue where the lab scans I get back are always sorta devoid of the personality you expect from film. I shot about 4 rolls of 120 fuji 400h and the colors I got (even when exposed +1 or +.5) looked like bland, unedited digital images. Do you think this is the fault of the lab doing my scans? I'm planning to get my own scanner (mainly to save money) and I'm wondering if that is going to fix it. I understand that a little color correction in post is necessary but these images literally just look devoid of personality.

      It's really hard to say, I made a video not loo long ago with the AE-1 vs a Pixel phone and those shots came out looking really bland. I thought it was the scans at first but then it turned out my camera battery was really low and over exposing the metering...

      Hey just throwing in my 2 cents :)
      Pro400h (especially in 120) is very unsaturated and lower in contrast so the resulting images can be edited to the taste of most any photographer. Over exposing will lead to even less saturation and contrast but more detail (particularly shadow detail).
      Perhaps you should try a more contrasty & saturated film like Lomo 800 or Ektar 100 :)

    Your AE1 is consistently over exposing by one to two stops outdoors. 400 is too fast which is blowing out your blue skies. If you want a better comparison use 100-200 ASA and enlarge.

    Some of those film camera shots look as if they are slightly over exposed compared to the iPhone.
