Im only 25 and have been sailing recreationally for over a decade now. This is by far the best explaination of heaving to i have seen. Thank you! Always love learning and fully understanding new things about sailing. Happy sailing dave!
I have watched a bunch of Dave's videos, and they are very helpful in understanding how to sail. I also had the opportunity to take a beginner sailing course that he instructed. He was very patient and thorough in explaining and demonstrating all aspects of the course. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed his class and learned a lot. I highly recommend his videos, and if you can take a class with him you will not regret it. Our class was through Nockamixin sailing school.
I'm glad that you showed the mainsail does come into play. It helps to keep a balance that the jib doesn't pull you completely downwind when you've lost your forward momentum and therefore rudder authority. Properly hove-to a boat does make a little bit of forward progress so, in restricted waterways such as a small lake, even if you're the only boat out there, you can't go completely off watch.
Great video. You clearly explained and demonstrated heaving to. It is a nice way to stop and take a break. Hadn’t thought of heaving to, to drop the main and starting the engine.
Thanks! It's amazing how much everything calms down when you heave to. An important think to remember is slow down before you set the tiller to leeward.
Very informative video thankyou. I assume you adjust the mainsheet dependent on conditions and the vessel. I’m a interested in heaving to in big waves/big winds, assuming the storm sail is up, and the main is down? Or would you keep the main up and reefed?
Thank you! You still need a main sail to balance the boat and point up wind. Definitely a storm sail and reefed main. If there's no mainsail you will just drift off to a broad reach like when I lower the main while hove to. Practice different sail set ups in different conditions and figure out what's best for your boat. Good luck!
Thanks! Yes the Main sail provides balance and keeps the boat from heading on a close reach. Check out the part when I lower the main while hove to... the boat bears away to a broad reach.
Next video demonstrate how to pass the tiller behind your back that way you can keep your attention down the center line of the boat and increase your situational awareness.
Excellent point. With getting started making videos it is really surprising how distracting having a camera on and thinking about the camera being set up correctly.
To start with yes. See how the boat settles down then usually sheet in just a little bit on the main. Every boat is going to balance out differently. Also a smaller jib in stronger wind helps keep the boat on a close reach position to the wind. Remember to let the boat slow down a little before putting the tiller to leeward.

Oh, had to give you another subscriber with this perfect explaination😁
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it. I started sailing at 16 and I'm 47... I'm still learning and understanding new things about sailing, it never ends.
Mate that's the best look at heaving to I've seen by anybody. Thanks a lot, I finally get a proper look at how it's done.
Thanks Shane! I appreciate it. I just posted a tacking video today.

Thanks Jody... good times!
So well explained. Most sites gloss through it and don't spend the time to fully explain the process. Great job.
THANKS !! We have a lot more videos coming. Tons of footage to edit from the sailing season.
This is an excellent video Dave! Very informative with good audio and video quality.
Thanks!!
Good explanation. Simple and to the point. Thanks!
Thanks!!

Best explanation I have seen so far! Great video. Can't wait to try it.
Thank you!
You made that look very easy Dave. I am eager to practice it.

@@captaindave8683, thanks for the bonus tip. I will practice it sometime this week.
This video is very helpful, best I have seen....thank you.
Thanks Lee, glad it was helpful. Happy sailing!!
Great video, very clear. THANK YOU!
Thanks Andrew!!!
Thanks Dave, that made great sense. Cheers
You're welcome Shawn and thanks for watching!
This is good explanation.
Thank you!
Well done.
Thank You!!
Awesome!!!
Thanks
Amazing heave to video!! Would love to get out sailing with Captain Dave!
Thanks Grady!
Keep m coming Skipper..as i'm new to sailing myself..
I will!!
great instruction!
Thank you!
You can litterally crank the tiller all the way over to the leeward side and it will slow your drift even more, especially with a fixed keel.
Hi Keith, you are correct but that also adds a lot of load to the rudder.
@@captaindave8683 It shouldn't.. It should be loading the keel only.. the rudder is pointed to the direction of your drift.
Very informative video thankyou.

Very good. Is it important to keep the main up? Why?
Thanks... yep... it keeps the bow up into the wind. I lower the main while hove to and the boat will bear away to a broad reach.

Great
Thanks!
Have you ever hove too with just the main and no jib?
Looks fast. What make and length of the boat? Good for me to review the process. Thanks.
The small boat is a Sirius 21. Very similar to a Catalina 22. The second boat is a Hunter 32.
Both boats look like fun. Thanks.
How bout ketch ? Thanks

Is the main just eased all the way out and luffing?

What type of boat are you on?
The first boat is a sirius 21. The second boat is a friends hunter 31.
Now I currently own a Sea Sprite 28.
