  • Korea - the only country to ever bring Catholicism to the masses WITHOUT colonization, foreign missionaries or proselytizing. How did the oldest Western institution in the world get rooted in Korea, so much so that it played a major role in the democratization of the formerly Confucian kingdom?

It will be fine especially for those who seek the Truth. What is Truth? Why don’t seek it? Find out from the original Apostolic Fathers (Patristics) and Church history. Don’t just believe people who don’t really understand the Catholic Church. Have to understand both sides instead of one sided, right? Intelligent Protestants convert to Catholicism because they did their own research. And Catholics who don’t understand their faith become Protestants.

Yes, but... I mean, it's interesting for me to hear "outsiders" stumble upon things from an amateur academic sense as well. But it could definitely have helped with explaining the confusion between academic interest and religious conviction (nobody returning baptized is still just studying anything from a detached academic perspective, and once you have bishops in country that's pretty significant shift... yet when and how that happened was missed. I was personally more bothered by their failure to really lay out that history. It seems they jumped from the late 18th century to the War to Pope Francis way too fast, mentioning beatification of martyrs whose martyrdom hadn't really been explained. It's probably also impossible to understand the english language use of "Hocus Pocus" without the context of anti-Catholic propaganda in English history and the connection to Protestant theology that rejects the doctrine of transubstantiation.

The Catholic Church thrives in Korea. The church was growing so much during my Catholic decade there (2002-2012) that I was a member of four parishes, as the first parish I joined split three times as it grew. I also loved that nuns in habits were everywhere. Here in the US, where I am a catechist, my 13-year-old confirmation students do not even know what a nun is!

My father became an orphan in the 60s, and was sent to an orphanage but later was able to attend a Catholic school in Gwangju even tho he couldnt afford tuition (even public high schools had tuition in Korea back then).
Catholic priests took him in and gave him shelter and also some part time jobs too after school so hed have a place to stay as well.
He still speaks highly of those men, among them was this Italian priest who came to Korea to build the school and work for the community.
After Korea got much better economically in the 80s he then left to work in Sudan, and in the 2000s theyd built a school there and a bunch of my dad and his classmates donated bc of him.

You forgot Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci's influence. In the early 1600s, he gave books on Catholic tenets to a Korean emissary to China. Together with Joao Rodrigues's contribution, these books became dynamos of change, which unfolded into the 'Silhak movement'.
Also, St Laurent Imbert (MEP), Pierre-Phillibery Maubant, and Jacques Chasten were missionaries martyred together with the Koreans in 1839. Imbert was led by to believe his cooperation would save the Korean neophytes. In the end, he chose martyrdom instead of betrayal.
(St Laurent Imbert is also believed to have celebrated the first Mass in Singapore in 1821. As Christians, the 1st seeds are always precious, and the blood of martyrs is the seed of faith.)

Several points that I've noticed about this discussion.
I've been a Southern Baptist for most of my adult life and have converted to Eastern Orthodoxy in late 2017. I no longer hold any anti Catholic views from my former associations.
Here are a couple discrepancies with your presentation.
    1. The current Papacy is resultant of a power struggle which occurred a thousand years ago between the Roman archbishop Eastern patriarchs. It relies upon a uniquely Roman interpretation of Matthew 16:18-20?? Which the entire Eastern church rejected out of hand and renounced upon the ground that it had never before been interpreted in such a manner. Remember that we are to follow the faith as it was delivered to the Church by the Apostles (Galatians chapter 1 and Jude Chapter 1)
    2. The Catholic faith is NOT Western. It is a Jewish sect which was rejected by the Jewish diaspora very early. The Roman Catholic Mass, and the Eastern Orthodox Divine liturgy are of the same origin. They are an adaptation of Jewish liturgical practices predating the Christian era. Our doctrine is found imbedded in these practices as God told Moses and Joshua to do. This is so that the Divine precepts be also imbedded into our human hearts
Most ancient people could not read but they memorized the Gospel as they memorized the "Mass".
This is why the Liturgies are so deeply important. Know the liturgy and you will know the Gospel.
    3. "Christian Names" aren't Western names for the most part. But Western names are often Jewish names. We take the name of a venerated Christian Saint at our baptism. And that is our Christian name. It's that simple.
    4. God became Man in order to sanctify mankind. Being made in the image of God we are also intended to behave with the same defrance toward all mankind that God has shown for us. God isn't Jewish, nor Italian, English Korean nor Japanese. He is sovereign over all of Heaven and Earth. The Holy Catholic Church is not Holy for any reason aside from the fact that God has made her Holy. Has made her his Bride. Flesh of his flesh. The Ethiopian and the European, the Asian and the Polynesian all stand before him without prejudice. He loves all.
    5. Mary is Holy because she is Chosen of God. All Christians are commanded to intercede for each other. Mary is uniquely qualified because she is his first convert. Both as his mother, and as the sacred vessel of his incarnation. We absolutely do not worship her. We love her as we have been commanded to do. Read the Gospel of Mark for that.

I applaud the presentation by the two young presenters here. They do a fine job recapping the development of Catholicism within Korea as a self-guided effort, more or less, in establishing the Church independent of the Papacy in Rome, sometime around the sixteenth Century when Christianity was undergoing changes in Europe by way of the Reformation.
If the truth be known, that is NOT the first time when Christianity was introduced to the Korean Peninsula. It must, therefore, be distinguished and qualified by stating Christianity had long been part of life in Korea, starting around the time of when Shilla, one of the dynasties, had brought in military help of T’ang China and conquered neighboring Baekche and the much stomper Koguryo in the North.
For it was during the Unified Shilla period when Christianity was introduced to Korea, in the form, albeit, of Nestorianism. It seems to have flourished for a time certain, and would indicate the emergence of Christianity much earlier in the Korean isle, than understood till now, putting it around 1,000 a.d.
The two presenters might do well to look further into the true history of Christianity in Korea.

Very interesting presentation! Here in the States, we have many Korean Catholic churches, very strong communities. About "hocus pocus," you're right, it refers to the Latin words of consecration of the bread into Christ's body at Mass, but it was a Protestant slurring of the words to mock the consecration, because Protestants deny the Catholic understanding of the Mass and consecration.

If I may, the Pope has not always been White. Early on, they were not. However, due to the historical ecclesial relationship with the Roman Empire, they have largely been from Italy. That changed with John Paul II who was Polish, then Benedict XVI who is German. Francis is Argentinian, although he has family ties in Italy. Honestly, I suspect it won't be too long before we get an Asian pope.
Also, as Catholics, we *are Christians*. We are disciples of Christ first and foremost, and everything else in our lives should facilitate our relationship with Christ.

Amen! Amen! And it would have been more accurate if the hosts mentioned that the Bible (in the form we have today) was made possible through the Catholic Church. The Church safeguarded the okd testament, determined the books and letters that are Divinely inspired with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and codified the Bible by hand as there was no printing press yet. The Catholic Church also declared the Bible as infallible-ergo those who believe the Bible as the infallible word of God indirectly accepts the AUTHORITY of the Catholic Church.

Yes. And I hear there are African candidates with high chances as well. In any case, the Pope isn’t elected based on race, but it’s only natural for there to be more candidates there where the Church is stronger. Also, even though it has always been a universal Church, for many centuries it was hard to have many people from remote countries come to the centre of it. Only recently have travel and communication become so easy that we basically take them for granted. There have been efforts to have cardinals from most parts of the world for some time. Europe was for many years where the Church flourished and concentrated the most, but that is shifting at present. Catholicism is turning more to the south, as Europe becomes more and more secular. But it is not a competition. The word ‘catholic’ itself means universal, and whether it is a white or non-white Pope, we just pray to have a good Pope.

The statement of the Catholic Catechism that the Bible teaches the truth without error is to be understood as meaning that the biblical writings contain without error everything that God wanted to convey to us for our salvation.
But in profane matters, the possibility of error is not ruled out. In plain language, this means that errors in the Bible in historical or scientific areas are also considered possible in Catholic theology.
This has to do with the fact that, from a Catholic perspective, the Bible (unlike the Koran in Muslim understanding) is not the literal word of God, but rather a collection of writings by various inspired human authors who report on their experiences with God.

Also they were Koreanized it as most of other countries do. The One Holy Catholic and apostolic church is the original church. Catholic means "universal" Christ's universal church for everyone everywhere. The church Christ established stood for over (1,500 years) before a monk named Luther broke away and created his own man made protestant church, a movement which ultimately led to all of the thousands of denominations we see today preaching "Once saved always saved" and calvinist theology, among others. This was merely 400+ years ago. They also removing 7 books from the Old Testament. Books that weren't even officially removed from the KJV until 1885. Luther even wanted to remove the book of Hebrews, James, and Revelation.
The Catholic church has stood for 2,000 years, going back to Saint Peter and Christ. Those who claim otherwise don't know the full history of the church. Peter is buried at Saint Peter's Basilica. Christ established His church on earth through the apostles, and Peter was the leader, Peter was the one Christ gave the keys of the gates of heaven to. The church is both spiritual and physical. It is the cornerstone. Whatever is bound on earth will be bound in heaven, and it's the Church's authority to interpret the scripture so everyone in the body isn't confused. Nicene creed, the apostles creed, the one holy Catholic and apostolic church was it. Read about the catacombs and the earliest Christians and what the church looked like. Read books on Ignatius of Antioch. 30 popes had already led the church prior to Constantine and the legalization of the Church.
Yes, there have been some sketchy popes, but the church has and will always correct itself and overcome for the gates of Hell will never prevail against it. Nore did some of the evil kings of Isreal bring down Israel after king David. An apostolic secession of kings that were ordained by God in the Old Testament. Each king may not have been approved of, but the secession was. It's no different now. There has been an unbroken chain of succession going back to Saint Peter. Christ is everything to Catholic Christians. The entire Mass is centered around the Eucharist. Everything else is prayer. The fullness of the Christian faith is in the Catholic church. Outside of East Orthodox (They split off after 1,000 years but are destined to reunite again) everything else was started by men.
    (Confessing to a priest)
All pray directly to God. Afterward, they pray for each other because scripture says we should.
    *James 5:16
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
    Also:
    *Ephesians 2:18-20
    New King James Version
18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
We are told that we are 'one' with the saints in the body of Christ. They're alive without sin in Heaven and can also pray for us. Im just scratching the surface.
    (Praying the rosary)
The rosary is a summary of the gospels from the beginning to the end. From the virgin birth, through Christ's life and ministry, the Lord's prayer, to his death and resurrection. You don't pray 'to' a rosary anymore than you pray 'to' a Bible when you're holding it.
    (Mary)
Mary was the arc of the new covenant and FULL of grace. In the book of Luke all generations are to call her blessed. Her extraordinary role in Revelation and how she helps bring people to Christ through visions and miracles has gone back to the very beginning after her assumption. Nonetheless we don't 'worship' her. She's created.
    (The Eucharist or communion)
Transubstantiation in the Eucharist, or communion to them. Catholics take it more seriously. It's not just consuming crackers and juice in remembrance of a Holy Spirit many Protestants think isn't present in what they're consuming. Christ literally says this is my body and blood.
    *John 6:51-59
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
    *Mark 14:22-26
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many"
    (Faith and Works)
The Catholic church is the single largest charitable entity in the world with the largest body of missionary work around the world and supplier of medical, food, ministry, etc. By Church, meaning the members in the body of it. Done through love and spirit, not by earning our way into heaven. The good works are driven by the spirit.
    *James 2:14-26
14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
18 But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac, his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
    (Losing salvation)
    *2 Peter 2:20-22
20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
    *Romans 11:18-22
18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
    *Revelation 22:19
19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
    (Baptism)
    *John 3:5
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
    *1 Peter 3:21
21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    *Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

I once supported a Catholic charity dedicated to the care and raising of orphans after the Korean War. Catholic nuns would set up households for a group of kids--I forget the number but maybe about ten per household--and act essentially as "mothers" to each group of kids in that setting. I'm sure there was more to it than that and the nuns must also have kept community among themselves as well, but anyway that's one particular set up for orphans by the Korean Catholic Church. I'm sorry I can't recall more details about the kids and whether or not mixed kids were involved, but I'd be surprised if they weren't.

All praise, glory and honor be to God Almighty through His Son our Savior Jesus Christ in unity with the Holy Spirit, for lighting the torch of truth that never dies, in Korea. May God bless your country, your people and remain faithful till the end.
Thank you for your well researched video and your accurate portrayal of basic Catholic beliefs. It is important to note that it was academic curiosity as you put it, or our primordial desire to seek truth, that introduced Korea to Catholicism.
Like the first Korean Catholics, truth is ultimately absolute for if it were relative to the individual then there would be no such thing as truth. Only in Catholicism is the absolute, undeniable truth, that is Jesus Christ, revealed.
You can comb through every teaching especially the 10 commandments in the Old Testament, with a fine toothed comb, and you will see that if every person in this world simply obeyed them, we would be in heaven on earth. The highest standard of morality is holy, and this is how we are to live.
Yet we also understand our fallen nature, the ancient enemy Satan has been given power over this world, and he does all he can to entrap our souls through sin, which is why we are taught not to live for this temporal transitory world. This broken world will pass very soon and all things will be made entirely new when our Savior returns.
In that day, God Almighty Himself will come down from heaven and live among us. He will wipe away all our tears, no more pain and suffering, no more sickness, we become immortal in our new perfect bodies, worship our Creator together with all the great men and women before us, bathed in God's love, and behold our Lord's wondrous works, for eternity.
This is the promise we believe in our hearts and will gladly be persecuted for even at pain of death.

It is incredibly beautiful that people from so many cultures, as different from each other as the world is different, were able to unite around common values and understand each other. It is wonderful to meet a Catholic from another country with whom you seem to have nothing in common. As a Polish Catholic i think, being baptized also added a new quality in culture of Korea, the same like that has happened to our Slavicness. However, there are big problems ahead of us, such as the terror of the correctness of gender ideology and the mainstream in the church towards the sustainable development agenda, which is a communism in new, green and more sneaky version.

Great presentation of the birth of Catholic Christianity in Korea. And yes, those Korean envoys who periodically traveled to Beijing had the chance to interface with Catholics there and once influenced by those beliefs brought them back home.
And what’s also key is that those Catholic beliefs clashed severely with Confucian ancestral rites and rituals. At the time new believers were expected to give them up, because they were understood as worship... but in later Catholic interpretations were traslated rather as “veneration” similar to Catholic veneration of saints. And so converts nowadays retain those Confucian shows of respect, for those who gave them life.

the Latin hocus pocus you're referring to is not witchcraft. It refers to the transubstantiation of the Eucharist during the consecration on the altar. Jesus is no longer here so we commemorate Him through Communion when we receive Him. We don't eat him in the literal sense. Jesus said He is the bread of life. It means we must be one with Him through the Eucharist. We will remember Him forever with us through the Holy Eucharist.

Catholic Priests Association for Justice did IMMENSE work for democratization.
They hid dissidents, Myeongdong Cathedral was the “Holy Site” of Democratization as protestors hid there.
Cardinal Kim Sou Hwan during the June Uprising in 1987 told the riot police “Youd have to arrest me, the priests, the friars and the sisters, before you get to these students”
Then when an SNU student Park Jong Chul died under torture (basis for the film 1987: When the Day Comes) - in the homily he said:
“I want to ask this regime, “Are you not afraid of God’s Wrath?!”
Is there any modicum of conscience and morality? It seems this regime only has the power of the sword and guns.
In the Book of Genesis the Lord asks Caun where is your brother Abel.
And he answers “am I my brothers keeper?”
This question is being asked of us today.
“Where is your brother, your student, your own citizen Park Jong Chul?”
"’I just slammed rhe desk BANG and he croaked so I don’t know” they say.
“ The investigators were a bit too eager sure but whsts the big deal? When you do work for your country you’re gonna get your hands dirty. That was from just two rogue policemen so I do not know”
This, IS THE RESPONSE OF CAIN”

Thank you, Cedric and Becky! Alot was covered, and I learned so much! I appreciated it, and certainly interfaced //fact-checked/ anectodal and published works* with regards to a History, and a thread embedded in Korea and its formation, both recent (state formation/democratization) and far (early fathers/martyrs) past. Myeongdong Cathedral is, its own place and I find it amazing (in awe) that you, Becky, were attuned to what it was like to find oneself in the pews and to leave, with a lift as well. I have been there on a number of occasions.* Only God knows, what was there, and then for each of us. I also appreciated the bit regarding the official recognition of Catholicism by the Royal Court, at a very important point, a determining time* at the turn of that century, as well as how Korea received Pope Francis while I was still in the motherland (in 2015), e.g., the beatification of the 124 (and I had the Ah hah! moment toto!, with the Beatitudes, thanks to you) and also the significance of Pope John Paul II's visit, in terms of the canonization then (in 1984), which placed* Korea as a country with the fourth-largest number of saints of the Roman Catholic Church, after Italy, Spain and France (fact-checked, NYTimes). I am unclear if that (rank) is the case, today, but One can suppose that The Vatican sees Korea, as a significant sight, fertile land through the ages for the faith by the faithful, in sacrifice and movement of the Church at large, in the "Far East." >My Christian name is derived from- Mary, my father being Roman Catholic. I hold appreciation for the topic covered, and by the project that you two are forging together. Sincerely,

Catholicism in Korea is very different from other countries. We're probably the first people to accept it willingly and saw it as a 'way out' from the rigid class system and even a way of escaping poverty (missionaries provided education and some shelter).
I still feed sad that many people in the Middle East, South America, and Asia (Philippines, especially) had to suffer at the hands of Catholic countries though. Catholicism should've been accepted only in the way Korea did - through will and not force.

This expression developed long after the time that the words , “This is my body”, were first uttered by Christ, at the “Lord’s Supper” aka, the first “mass”.
It was used by non-believing observers who viewed , the somewhat embellished form of the mass,.....as some kind of magical ritual.
And so “hocus pocus” would also sadly be applicable when our Protestant brothers and sisters celebrate that sacrament of their church.

@@22grena Right, it is a slur against the belief in the Real Presence, as is, by extension, the "Hokey-Pokey" (aka Hokey-Cokey) dance. At the Consecration, the priest, who is acting in persona Christi, elevates the Host or Eucharist (from the Greek for "thanksgiving") and says, "Hoc est enim Corpus Meum." To quote my Maryknoll Latin Mass hand missal, "At this instant the Transubstantiation takes place. Christ acts through the priest, offering His Body and Blood to God. It is the sacrifice of Calvary renewed, the most sacred action possible to man." Look up the instances of Eucharistic miracles which Heaven needs to send us from time to time to shore up our weak faith, including that of several priests. There are fascinating stories, many of which have been verified by independent scientific analysis, of consecrated Hosts, for instance, containing AB blood from a living human heart (and different from the presiding priest's blood type). Of course, each time Mass is offered, there is a miracle, but we see with the light of our faith. It is not a magic show.

Korean Buddhist Temples constitute a great asset to South Korea. Their Temple Stay program attracts Tourists from all over the world, especially from the USA, and Germany where Korean Buddhist Temples flourish. The Vesak Lantern Festival which celebrates the Buddha's Birthday in Seoul is a festival of colour and light and world renown. The cuisine served in Korean Buddhist Temples in Korea are some of the best plant-based food in the world prepared by Korean Buddhist monks using fresh ingredients plucked from the nearby forests. The Hwaeomsa (Flower Garland Temple) is a head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, (located on the slopes of Jirisan, in Masan-myeon, Gurye County, in South Jeolla Province, South Korea) and is a fine example of the heavenly natural environment that is found in Korean Temples. Korean Buddhism is highly regarded in the Buddhist world and at International gatherings of Buddhists. Thank you, Korea.

I read somewhere that when that famous musical film 'The Sound Of Music' was shown in Korea, all the songs/singing parts were cut!
    I don't know why.
Perhaps that's the resson why he can't reasonate with the songs 'Maria' and 'Edelweiss' which were from 'The Sound of Music' ???
