100% agree. These people are all barking up the wrong tree. The excuse of “learning about/implementing parental controls is too complicated” sounds to me like lazy parenting. Yes social media should have regulations that protects against online predators but it’s the parents responsibility as parents to protect their children. This also includes teaching their children how to behave online. The issue is it’s much easier to point fingers at others than point the fingers at themselves. It’s much more uncomfortable and harder to look at what “we” are doing wrong vs what someone else is doing wrong. I agree with Zuckerberg on his idea on requiring parents to approve every app that gets downloaded. It stops the issue before it even has the chance of becoming an issue

I understand how social media plays a role in being present in the choices that someone makes that could lead to depression and even suicide. But ultimately it comes down to choice and the luxury of free will. Non of the ceo’s chove their platforms down anybodys throat or hold a gun to their heads. Every single one of them choose to go to their respective appstores to download them and also made choices on how they use these apps.liquor and drugs are available and if you choose to take drugs or drink, getting into it won’t be hard at all. The senators and "responsible parents" are just playing the blame game. Due to their failures. It's like blaming the knife manufacturer for the stabbing murders.
Social media can be dangerous to children. But.... It's not just children but it's to all people. Too much if everything good is bad that's how it's been and that's how it will always be. Food is a good thing right? But too much of it can cause some health complications and obesity. Since it becomes a life threatening situation it is the obligation for the person eating (if he wants to continue to live) to cut down on the food intake and exercise and be on a diet. That doesn't mean stop eating. If what Mr. Ossof was saying to Zuckerberg applied to this scenario, he'd basically be telling Zuckerberg that "Hey! Food is getting people fat, so in order to cut that down, make food less delicious!" Which is just outrageous!
It's not the fault of the apps or any of the CEO's. They're doing all that they can but it's the duty and responsibility of the parents to ensure the safety of their children by setting down some ground rules, giving them strict screen time, daily advice and so on...
So the parents whose children committed suicide because of the "apps" should CAN IT! because they're the ones who've failed their children.
And maybe if the economy was not the mess it is today, parents wouldn't have to work double jobs to survive and would actually have time to guide they're kids.
    (And I'm just 16!)

This is such an odd subject. Are you going to sue Verizon if your kid texts a child molester? How exactly is it their problem? They all seem to be taking fairly reasonable steps to prevent kids from being exploited, but how much can they actually do? In the internet age there is always going to be a way to circumvent these and predators will find those ways around. So they are going to allow the victim to sue the platform they were contacted on rather than going directly after the predator? With the overseas predators it's obviously significantly more difficult to go after the predator, but they do it by design because these people are smarter than they are given credit for.
The parents need to step their game up. I see so many little kids being parented by an iPad instead of by a human, but people are always looking to shift blame. I can tell you that my kids wont be on these apps at all, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a flip phone that can only call and text until they are old enough to actually take on the responsibility of a smart phone. I don't care how embarrassing it may be.

Mr Padilla and Mr Tillis handled it really great and professional in my opinion. While other senators made themselves look like clowns in some way. Still, I am greatful for this whole debate, that is rising the conciousness about the topic and as many others in the comments say, we all agree that we must protect our children, espacially as parents, but also everyone who is not a parent or in another situation. This is a very good and important first step. We all must remember that Social media is a really new phenomenon to humanity, which means we first have to figure out how to handle it properly. We all know about how bad it is, but reality shows that 95% of the people you see in daily life use their smartphones all the time. We really need education on how the human psychologie works and how algorithems work to catch us. And how to escape them. The knowledge is there. We need to teach it. Take the books by Allan Carr for example. This is critical knowledge to quit bad habits. Or the 1% Method. And many more. A sex offender can find anyway to hurt a child .. parents seem to always get blamed yet these companies always get a slap on their poor little hands .. no , they’re allowing all these crimes to happen .. enough is enough.. it’s not right to allow these innocent children to die or murder others .. you make billions and billions but yet you can’t protect these children and all the victims

Clearly this age of 13 is the issue. Simply raise the bar to 18. Anyone under 18 is a minor. Simple as that. Where do they get this 13 from? Under 13 shouldn’t even be online without parental supervision. 17 to 13 should have protected accounts that are verified. 18 and older, should not have sexually graphic material unless they are adult sites like porn. Never mix teen, child and adult material in the same places. WTF?

I know this is about to piss a bunch of people off but I have to say it……Don’t allow your children to have social media. As parents and guardians WE have to parent and protect our children. It’s baffling to me that anyone would rely on a social media platform to do what WE should be doing. 1. Don’t allow your children on social media 2. Monitor closely what your children are doing online we have to except it’s on us as parents to parent and protect because they clearly aren’t going to. They are the biggest conglomerates in the world they don’t care as long as they meet their bottom line! Protect the children in your home because they won’t

It is awful how the parents of these kids are left without care and protection at home but they go as far as trying to sue the products. Let's blame the knife company for selling knives used in stabbing. We should sue the ladder companies after we fall from them or sue a car company after a car accident.

These parents (supposed victims) has resorted to blaming tech companies and have not taken responsibility for allowing their children to access these products when the parents know and are aware of the dangers of the internet. On the other hand, some may argue that tech companies are aware they are creating dangerously addictive products in order to keep people using their products. We're living in a complex situation, conflicts are rising and tech companies, civilians and governments have a share in the blame. If we don't resolve the issues we face today then we may be heading towards another global war, it's devastingly upsetting to think civilisation is hardwired to this path of violence. A cycle that has been raging for centuries. War looks like the driving force that catalyses large technological and social advancements to the future. I wish leading figures of the world in the Science, Political and other sectors would come up with a better solution than War.

I disagree with Mr. Citron. No kid should be using video games because they are highly addictive. Kids should find more classical forms of entertainment. I would also recommend that all American kids receive a classical education and nothing else. Such builds high stability in the minds of youth and that's what is absolutely needed. Very high stability that is foolproof.
