It's a societal issue that children want and have phones at the age of 13 or even younger. Children feel pressured to have one because their friends have phones. Easy way out of a fight is to parents succumb to the pressure and given as a birthday or Christmas present. What's scary is you don't know who your child is talking to or watching.

Parents might try getting the kid help for depression but it’s hard to treat (even with pills thrown at it) when the cause is unknown
This is such an odd subject. Are you going to sue Verizon if your kid texts a child molester? How exactly is it their problem? They all seem to be taking fairly reasonable steps to prevent kids from being exploited, but how much can they actually do? In the internet age there is always going to be a way to circumvent these and predators will find those ways around. So they are going to allow the victim to sue the platform they were contacted on rather than going directly after the predator? With the overseas predators it's obviously significantly more difficult to go after the predator, but they do it by design because these people are smarter than they are given credit for. The parents need to step their game up. I see so many little kids being parented by an iPad instead of by a human, but people are always looking to shift blame. I can tell you that my kids wont be on these apps at all, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a flip phone that can only call and text until they are old enough to actually take on the responsibility of a smart phone. I don't care how embarrassing it may be.

@@gurkkan4065 The Chinese government can access our data at any time through Chinese records, establishing an open door for them as the data creators. This situation arises as we grapple with challenges in removing all the viruses.
I agree, but even if you put a new wall in front of people who are exploiting children they will find another way around it. At some point, it becomes much easier and safer to target the people as the problem and not the companies. But that's not a subject that people are ready for. I am not siding with anyone, but how many parents have the talk with their children about social media, and proper use. How many kids who are under 16 yo are on TikTok when TikTok is not to be used under 16. I will get a lot of comments saying that I am wrong, but just answer this question to yourself if you plan to attack me for what I said. Do children have proper education about talking to strangers online?
Oh how sad it is that the US government cant afford to buy new mics that dont crack and make everyone's ears bleed with every word spoken into them. Very sad indeed. 😒
Mr Padilla and Mr Tillis handled it really great and professional in my opinion. While other senators made themselves look like clowns in some way. Still, I am greatful for this whole debate, that is rising the conciousness about the topic and as many others in the comments say, we all agree that we must protect our children, espacially as parents, but also everyone who is not a parent or in another situation. This is a very good and important first step. We all must remember that Social media is a really new phenomenon to humanity, which means we first have to figure out how to handle it properly. We all know about how bad it is, but reality shows that 95% of the people you see in daily life use their smartphones all the time. We really need education on how the human psychologie works and how algorithems work to catch us. And how to escape them. The knowledge is there. We need to teach it. Take the books by Allan Carr for example. This is critical knowledge to quit bad habits. Or the 1% Method. And many more. Hope everyone takes more responsability for his/herself and others to protect him/herself and others.
1:11:09 It’s funny, because an Israeli TikTok employee resigned, saying that there was a problem with TikTok’s release, and TikTok must be held responsible. A sex offender can find anyway to hurt a child .. parents seem to always get blamed yet these companies always get a slap on their poor little hands .. no , they’re allowing all these crimes to happen .. enough is enough.. it’s not right to allow these innocent children to die or murder others .. you make billions and billions but yet you can’t protect these children and all the victims
It's interesting to see the difference between Republicans and Democrats during a bipartisan hearing. The Republicans seem to get a lot more passionate and ask significantly more hard hitting questions.
I don't understand, why they don't catch the criminals who did rapist, etc but only blame the CEO and not doing act? Are the CEO have connection with the criminals?
Clearly this age of 13 is the issue. Simply raise the bar to 18. Anyone under 18 is a minor. Simple as that. Where do they get this 13 from? Under 13 shouldn’t even be online without parental supervision. 17 to 13 should have protected accounts that are verified. 18 and older, should not have sexually graphic material unless they are adult sites like porn. Never mix teen, child and adult material in the same places. WTF?
I'm sorry but making Mark apologize to these families for THEIR OWN NEGLIGENCE is pretty dumb. Just because he paved the way for social media doesn't mean he tells you to use it in the first place/how to use it. It's like not wearing a seatbelt then getting mad that you flew out of your car.
Being an Australian, I'm glad our government isn't as idiotic and blatantly xenophobic as the majority of senators in Congress. "Senators" like Tim Cotton should be kicked off their seats despite being so "qualified" for the job.
Talking about childrens using Social media, while other childrens with no phones are dying day by day in Palestiine, why dont you bring Nathanyahu besides those ceo's? as Ranking Member said, i'll take that as no!
I know this is about to piss a bunch of people off but I have to say it……Don’t allow your children to have social media. As parents and guardians WE have to parent and protect our children. It’s baffling to me that anyone would rely on a social media platform to do what WE should be doing. 1. Don’t allow your children on social media 2. Monitor closely what your children are doing online we have to except it’s on us as parents to parent and protect because they clearly aren’t going to. They are the biggest conglomerates in the world they don’t care as long as they meet their bottom line! Protect the children in your home because they won’t
WHY IS RELIGION MONETARY PROTECTION ALLOWED WHY ARE THEY ALL NOT JUST ONE ALL OF THEM WHERE GUESS WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT DOES NOTHING ABOUT UNLESS IT IS A BENEFICIAL SITUATION WHERE THE CAN COME IN SHOOTING AND BE JUSTIFIED FOR IT
Isn’t it about child safety on the internet? Why the senators bring political topics into the hearing? I don’t think children care about any of these topics tbh.
Well it is ridiculous to have this hearing in the first place....but at least this will creates awareness about safety and ethical use of social media and perhaps AI for all...period
IF THINGS NEEDS TO HELP OUT LAW ENFORCEMENT BY ANYTHING THEN STOP WORRYING SO MUCH ABOUT WEAPONS FOR THEM AND FORCE LAW ENFORCEMENT TO USE ALL THIS MONEY THEY RECIEVE BUILDS IT ON MONITORING SYSTEM WHICH THEY ALREADY HAVE BUT KEEP THAT OUT OF PUBLIC
This is a very shame show. It's absurd how they invited company owners and forgot the companies who manufactured the phones used by the victims. It is awful how the parents of these kids are left without care and protection at home but they go as far as trying to sue the products. Let's blame the knife company for selling knives used in stabbing. We should sue the ladder companies after we fall from them or sue a car company after a car accident.
It still is not the fault of any social platform it is the FAULT OF THE THINGS LAW ENFORCEMENT BUILDS AND TAXES HELP MAKE THAT ARE OBSOLETE WOULD RATHER ALREADY HAVE THERE WORLD LAW ENFORCEMENT CONNECTED SYSTEMS BUT YET PLAY FOR THE EMOTIONS OF PEOPLE
Pointing out problems doesn’t mean that they’ll be solved, if they want actual change they should propose solutions instead and listen instead of trying to catch a mistake in one response
Why are we blaming CEOs for unfortunate crimes and occurrences, in their logic we should shut down the whole internet because there are thousands of crimes happening on the web and go back 100 years. It's up to the parents how you teach their children about their personal information exchange and safety, whether it is on the web or in real life.
Putting those who are in weaker position (child) in front so that they can blackmail others, what a joke. It's never about child, thet just need a reason, and a political show.
As much as I would love age verification to happen, t he issue with age verification is that it would not allow anyone who is undocumented on social media. That’s a huge issue in itself.
Parents cant watch their childs every move because lifestyles are fast pace and sometimes hectic. Plus theres too many sickos out their preying on children. Solution: all children dont have social accounts untill their 16.
If public policy is supposed to "step in" to temper the inherent incentive that corporations have to grow exponentially regardless of their impact on the well-being of consumers and communities, then WHERE have all these senators been for the last 20 years? They certainly haven't been stepping in with meaningfully ethical public policies, but now it's time to yell from the moral high ground as if most of ya'll haven't been flaming hypocrites since before you were elected to office.

Mr Graham could learn a thing or two about behaving himself from Chairman Durbin. The same goes for Mr Cotton
Smart Phones comes with the apps preloaded! Shifting the blame on parents. Parents are not techsavy the way app owner's are. The algorithm that app owners has, parents don't ever see it. If there's CSC on your social media platforms parents are not aware the app owners are! You have access to the content
Why even bother with a hearing when the the Senate Committee does nothing to penalized these platform. Many of these platform lobbied and can make politician look the other way.
Young people do not need to use social media at all. They need to spend time with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and fellow siblings and cousins. Furthermore, kids need to read books in paper form and play classical board games offline.
These parents (supposed victims) has resorted to blaming tech companies and have not taken responsibility for allowing their children to access these products when the parents know and are aware of the dangers of the internet. On the other hand, some may argue that tech companies are aware they are creating dangerously addictive products in order to keep people using their products. We're living in a complex situation, conflicts are rising and tech companies, civilians and governments have a share in the blame. If we don't resolve the issues we face today then we may be heading towards another global war, it's devastingly upsetting to think civilisation is hardwired to this path of violence. A cycle that has been raging for centuries. War looks like the driving force that catalyses large technological and social advancements to the future. I wish leading figures of the world in the Science, Political and other sectors would come up with a better solution than War.
I disagree with Mr. Citron. No kid should be using video games because they are highly addictive. Kids should find more classical forms of entertainment. I would also recommend that all American kids receive a classical education and nothing else. Such builds high stability in the minds of youth and that's what is absolutely needed. Very high stability that is foolproof.

Mark made a great suggestion (hr2 min 41)! These senators want to sue lol. Lets get real politicians & hold parents accountable.
THEY ALSO CAN BLAME SOCIAL PLATFORMS FOR THESE HORRIBLE THINGS BUT EVERY ONE OF THEM BE TAKING FUNDS OVER AND OVER FROM THE RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN GUILTY OF THIS FOR NOT YEARS CENTURIES NO ONE CAN REFUTE MY COMMENT AT ALL
100% the parents fault. They are the ones that need to control their children that cant think for themselves.
Nosense
Its funny how the ones who got subpoenaed barley got any questions thrown at them
Nosense
It would be interesting if all social media platforms reached a common agreement to withdraw their businesses from the United States. I would be curious to see how people would react, perhaps expressing their dissatisfaction or concerns.
In others words I bet this same people will be crying and complaining
God I wish they would- it’s getting ridiculous rude, vulgar, people waiting for the moment they can slam someone in the comment sections- and it’s dreadful boring bS rhetoric these days
Platforms are made for good use , but if u can't control ur own side of getting exposed to those brutal things in bad and trash way of using it then, U got no right of Blaming the CEO's!!!
It so pathetic how some senators cut off the answers and use this topic to advertise how many bills they have passed. How can you be so cynic to politicize this issue? Only yes/no questions, with enforced lack of context. That's such a weak, self righteous/populist rhetoric driven by emotions. I'm not defending any of the CEO's but we deserve a way more responsible approach to collaborate on solving these problems. Happily some senators are way more intelligent in their interrogation ways.
Thanks!
Social media is such an addictive platform and gives you anxiety if use excessively
Like everything, if you consume something excessively most could be harmful, this is the parents fault, I'm 20 years old and yes today is worst then back in day when i was younger, but my parents controlled my screen time and what i could or couldn't see, and i was a happy kid and grew normal, but if they didn't do that and i would ve been on internet freely 24/7 idk what could've happened, yes they should try to do better with their apps but it's the parents fault
@@andrelucas3804 You're right but it's not only parents fault. Why these companies don't give any warning or do any other step to prevent the user from using their apps excessively. They can do this so they should do this. They only encourage us to watch more and more
Yes, but parents play important roles in monitoring their children's usage online. If parents don't play their role, then who else will? Blaming the CEO/chair of social media platform is just plain irresponsible and childish act.
Pornsite
Mrs Blackburn was the worst one for me. She didn't ask any questions, just gave a speech
Amen Mr. Graham you tell them someone has to be accountable for these family's that have lost family members to these platforms.
Why do senators exhibit more restraint on TikTok and X during this particular hearing?
Because tiktok in the US already basically gave their data to a third party already.
@@gurkkan4065 The Chinese government can access our data at any time through Chinese records, establishing an open door for them as the data creators. This situation arises as we grapple with challenges in removing all the viruses.
You can't blame them but they can do better to prevent online sexual exploitation against children.
Mr. Graham's views on accountability of Big Tech are correct. Not only for Americans but for everyone worldwide.
1:11:09 It’s funny, because an Israeli TikTok employee resigned, saying that there was a problem with TikTok’s release, and TikTok must be held responsible. Then a U.S. congressman resigned because there was a problem with the entire Congress, so the entire United States should be held accountable ?
What is this stupid question?
There is difference between corporate employees and representative of American Citizen.
CRAZY
A sex offender can find anyway to hurt a child .. parents seem to always get blamed yet these companies always get a slap on their poor little hands .. no , they’re allowing all these crimes to happen .. enough is enough.. it’s not right to allow these innocent children to die or murder others .. you make billions and billions but yet you can’t protect these children and all the victims
I reported couple of videos that contains child pornography to facebook and FACEBOOK IGNORED IT, saying THE VIDEOS HAVE NOT VIOLATED THEIR POLICIES
How come the law not catching up with gun dealers for all the shootings in America?
it is always guilty, till proven innocent.
It's interesting to see the difference between Republicans and Democrats during a bipartisan hearing. The Republicans seem to get a lot more passionate and ask significantly more hard hitting questions.
Nice to know that discord has no encryption. No more with it
I don't understand, why they don't catch the criminals who did rapist, etc but only blame the CEO and not doing act? Are the CEO have connection with the criminals?
This doesn't make sense . Then go sue the car company for accident
WTF?
Fantasy
Mr. Graham is right. So true.
Im from Portugal and the right wing is full of racist, but I don't think as bad as this, this is so stupid
Xenophobix? 😂 oh you little weeb, you have so much yet to understand about the real world.
The fuc is australia?
Why This is Happening after Israeli Conflicts with Palestine ?
That Issue was started way back in 2005 may be ever prior to that.
Mr. Durbin is right. So true.
Blame the smart cell inventors, don't blame this geniuses .
Do their lawyers advise them not to answer yes or no questions?
Talking about childrens using Social media, while other childrens with no phones are dying day by day in Palestiine, why dont you bring Nathanyahu besides those ceo's? as Ranking Member said, i'll take that as no!
As much as i agree with you on that, this is about american rights, they will not be speaking about that
All these companies owe me money. Tell them to transfer amount in my account now
They subpoenaed their asses to be present and they shamelessly start with I am honoured and pleased to be here to talk about this important issue!
It is the responsibility of parents and personal users, if it goes this way, then US and UK has to apologize entire world every day
Senator Hawley you are right about tik-tok👍
I know this is about to piss a bunch of people off but I have to say it……Don’t allow your children to have social media. As parents and guardians WE have to parent and protect our children. It’s baffling to me that anyone would rely on a social media platform to do what WE should be doing. 1. Don’t allow your children on social media 2. Monitor closely what your children are doing online we have to except it’s on us as parents to parent and protect because they clearly aren’t going to. They are the biggest conglomerates in the world they don’t care as long as they meet their bottom line! Protect the children in your home because they won’t
WHY IS RELIGION MONETARY PROTECTION ALLOWED WHY ARE THEY ALL NOT JUST ONE ALL OF THEM WHERE GUESS WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT DOES NOTHING ABOUT UNLESS IT IS A BENEFICIAL SITUATION WHERE THE CAN COME IN SHOOTING AND BE JUSTIFIED FOR IT
Lord let what needs to be heard be heard and what needs to be seen be clearly seen in your name father God amen
28:59 This is the reason for this drama.
Isn’t it about child safety on the internet? Why the senators bring political topics into the hearing? I don’t think children care about any of these topics tbh.
If i were Mr. Shuo i would have asked if we could blame the parents and American gun laws also. Its like an alcoholic blaming the liquor.
gonna be using child safety to regulate the internet? hmmm me thinks so.
Are we going to remove all the children and place into child protective services?
Blame parents whos giving phones to the kids,
Well it is ridiculous to have this hearing in the first place....but at least this will creates awareness about safety and ethical use of social media and perhaps AI for all...period
With Meta and Tiktok , all senators talk about politics not about safety of children
Damn ridiculous
I hate that congress actually has me rooting for big tech :(
Behind every great fortune lies a great crime.
It still is not the fault of any social platform it is the FAULT OF THE THINGS LAW ENFORCEMENT BUILDS AND TAXES HELP MAKE THAT ARE OBSOLETE WOULD RATHER ALREADY HAVE THERE WORLD LAW ENFORCEMENT CONNECTED SYSTEMS BUT YET PLAY FOR THE EMOTIONS OF PEOPLE
Tom never had this problem with “Myspace” lmaooo
You don't need Trust and Safety Experts who own shares in Big Tech. That's a conflict of interest.
Pointing out problems doesn’t mean that they’ll be solved, if they want actual change they should propose solutions instead and listen instead of trying to catch a mistake in one response
Wait, if the point of this hearing is keeping kids from being groomed, where tf are the ceo of Discord?
Jason Citron is the CEO of Discord
Hope you get this done. An them platform's need to know kids lie about there age to get on the app.
Parents outof responsibility
Putting those who are in weaker position (child) in front so that they can blackmail others, what a joke. It's never about child, thet just need a reason, and a political show.
As much as I would love age verification to happen, t he issue with age verification is that it would not allow anyone who is undocumented on social media. That’s a huge issue in itself.
Parents cant watch their childs every move because lifestyles are fast pace and sometimes hectic. Plus theres too many sickos out their preying on children.
Solution: all children dont have social accounts untill their 16.
I'd push it to 18, ngl. A lot can happen between the ages of 16-18.
Some of them have (except tiktok banned) biggest market in India. Most of teenagers are from India still our MPs is sleeping.
Maybe America is lacking of money
I was saying the same shid just now
I cannot understand how annoying and stupid some of the republican senators are. how can you ask the question and then answer it yourself after interrupting the other person. completely idiotic behavior. Mr Graham could learn a thing or two about behaving himself from Chairman Durbin. The same goes for Mr Cotton
"Of course we will work with you senator! The OS for our killer robot army isnt quite ready yet..."😅
Glorifying the God particle without looking oracle’s up
Smart Phones comes with the apps preloaded! Shifting the blame on parents. Parents are not techsavy the way app owner's are. The algorithm that app owners has, parents don't ever see it. If there's CSC on your social media platforms parents are not aware the app owners are! You have access to the content
if a parent doesn’t know how to use the device they give to their child, the child shouldn’t be given the device to begin with.
@@zachasher5776that's 100% true, parents can't blame their inresponsibility on the apps
I loce Mark, hope he's staying strong in this time
Generation curse
Why even bother with a hearing when the the Senate Committee does nothing to penalized these platform. Many of these platform lobbied and can make politician look the other way.
America and its problems:
Guns: meh no big deal
Social media: oh yes, absolutely
Lol, what a show !
Make social media 18+ case closed
Yep
I disagree with Mr. Citron. No kid should be using video games because they are highly addictive. Kids should find more classical forms of entertainment. I would also recommend that all American kids receive a classical education and nothing else. Such builds high stability in the minds of youth and that's what is absolutely needed. Very high stability that is foolproof.
