that idea with the water only for your test is not a bad idea, that will definitely do a flush on the whole cooling system, drain the old water but check for leaks after the test drive, i did the thermostat on this same model van and they are pain to get to, i wouldn't mind doing a heater core flush or locate both inlet and outlet hoses for the heater core and let flush cleaner sit in the hoses in the heater core then try do a flush and back flush with low PSI hose..
