  • Meet Todd from Traverse City Michigan. He has brought me this 389 Pontiac from his 1965 GTO for a complete rebuild.
In this video Todd brings me the engine in the back of his truck and we tear it down together to see what he have to work with. We will have follow up videos with the build plan, assembly, first startup, and dyno day!

Thanks for the video and the narration regarding the plan for this engine. I'm very excited to have you doing this work. Your knowledge, skill, and vast experience building these engines gives me great confidence that the end product will perform well and will last many, many years. Thanks for including me in the video and thanks again for taking on this project.

Your Poncho motor is in good hands sir, he knows all my guys as well, David Vizard, Ben Alameda, he's attentive to detail, and shud provide you a proper Engine, when he's done........just curious, is ur '65 a post car???....i got a '64 Tempest post car......i LOVE the post.....cuz i'm a drag racer....we like those cuz they're lighter....they added a bunch of metal when they removed the post, drag racers LOVE a post car, stiffer, lighter......anyhoo.....ur motor is in a proper house, to be gone thru properly......I DEEPLY respect Alan..... he knows how to do it properly!!!!.....i'll be watching the build....BEST of luck to you sir....PONCHO POWER!!

    Hey AG,
Tim here again, i've never seen the 4 valve reliefs on a Pontiac piston to be so small.....but i'm used to forged....like a TRW L2262F Sealed power, and others have normal reliefs, then i realized i NEVER dove into a 389....i'm 400/428/455 savy.....intrested in what pistons you get for it.....and see their valve reliefs....but maybe you dont need to, and can use the dudes already there...as another Pontiac build, i'm watchin like a hawk....cuz i love it.....school me if i need it, on the pistons......just cuz i know how to make 600 hp outa a 455, dont mean i know 389's very well.....will be intently watchin for the next vid on the motor.....TY for gettin me jazzed up this afternoon.....i needed it......GREAT tear down, OH, and glad the wiped lobe lifter, came rite out, saves ALOT of cussin!!.....again, TY SIR!!

Hey Paul, I would love to do a Ford, I just need someone to bring me one, or maybe I will do on on spec. Thanks for commenting. AG, PS, I helped a buddy build a 351 for a stock car many hears ago, it ran pretty well. AG

I'm in the process of building a 351w. I have learned so much from your channel. The information you provide carries over to all brands. I'm very intrigued with the technical aspects and techniques it takes to build a reliable internal combustion engine, and the way you present it. Keep up the good work! Hopefully you can get a small block Ford in the shop.

A friend of mine had a 65 GTO, 389, tripower... It was a little faster than my 283 that I had in my 68 Chevelle AG. I believe the Pontiac was a 4 speed.

Camshaft went bad so probably need to check retainer to guide clearance maybe the extra lift pushed it past or really close to what it had in room

  • @MikeMeier-iq9sq

You might want to take a close look at the lifter bores. I have seen a few 400 Pontiacs with just a couple of sloppy lifter bores which causes the lifter to tilt slightly instead of rotating, so they either rotate slow or not at all, and I’m sure you know that a lifter that doesn’t rotate is short lived. I also had a Comp cam XE 256 Pontiac cam that had basically no tapper on the lobe tips and lifter bases were dead flat. It lasted less than 500 miles in a 1971 400 GTO engine. I should have checked it closer. Now I check everything. Love your videos! Thanks%

Great video!!! When you can let us know what cylinder heads are on this engine and what the combustion chamber volume is. For a stock 1965 Pontiac 389 the heads are probably 72 CC and yield about 10.5 to 1 compression?? I will be interested to see how you address the compression ratio and wanting to avoid detonation, and the selection of the camshaft!!! The camshaft will determine the opening and closing events of the valves and ultimately the cylinder pressure that will be achieved. I am wondering if this engine will be able to run on pump gas with a 93 octane rating?? Thank you for these informative videos!!

Will the head be ported, bigger valves installed, and the bath tub shaped combustion chambers be worked on to improve flow?

This is a stock type build, the customer is not looking for more power, just a nice reliable street engine. We will make some improvements that will help performance and reliability. Watch for updates.

Thanks for the question Bruce. There are lots of good break in oils. I have been using Lucas, it is readily available at APC my parts supplier, the price is reasonable and I have had pretty good success with it. About 40 engines with no failures. AG

Compared to the Heavier family Bonneville & Catalinas, the Factory '65 Tri--Power juice cammed (No Stock, hot Solid cam available) GTO was Noticeably quicker & Snappier performing but Not so compared to Similar sized (But Rarer less street Encountered) Factory higher compression, Solid lifter cammed Chevy, Ford & Mopar offerings..... Aftermarket long duration Solid lifter Cam + Bumped Up (11:1, 12:1) compression Mods made/make a Significant higher Rpm Hp performance Difference (Pull Higher Rpm before gear shifts) to the Poncho experience !!...., A real Missed factory stock Hp performance opportunity.....Factory Longer duration Solid lifter & Higher compression Max performance engine Options should have been available Stock.....

Todd looks pretty good for probably just getting violated at the Kanuckistan Border by the Border Mounties since they have a reputation of treating us Americans so well when we cross the border. I only hope it's recriprocal when they come here. I'd have just shipped it personally. Being a Gunsmith with an FFL and a CCW permit I'd never attempt to cross the border.

If you need parts & actual good information, you should probably call Butler Performance! Jim, (father) David & Rodney (sons) know Pontiac inside & out! They’ve run Pontiac engines since they were new! They know all the little quirks with them! Such as the cam tunnels are usually horrible! Oiling system issues & so on! They have parts in stock & there knowledge is second to none!
