  • The idea of the "end state" is a central focus of military planning. In fact, JP 5-0 states, "Joint planning is end state oriented." It is true also that military planners like "specific" end states, and American planners tend to share the Powell Doctrine's preference for clear exit plans. In this video blog, I try to introduce some considerations that planners should take into account when thinking about the end state. These considerations, in the aggregate, should serve to complicate (and perhaps complexify) our use of the term "end state." At the very least, I hope that the planning, psychological, and political factors I adduce will make it more difficult to invoke the term "end state" in too breezily a manner.

So, have you came up with better verbiage for an "End State"? If not, then joking a little, but maybe End State should have subcategories and combine all these ideas together?
E.g. Dr. Jack Kem's idea is an "End State Spectrum", because spectrum not only has a range but is also related to time (e.g. spectrum of light). Aaron Rapport - The Long and Short of It could be "End State continuum" because a continuous sequence of end state in which each approach are not perceptibly different from achieving the end state spirit, but the extremes between near and long term are quite distinct. The finally politics statement can be simply "End State Unpredictability".
