I have loved this song ever since hearing Sarah Brightman sing it many years ago. Personally I feel that Tarja's rendition is even better and that is a very high compliment. It is so beautiful and stunning that it has caused me to shed a tear a few times. I love this concert as much as her rock concerts. There is so much in the way of amazing vocals in it. It is incredible to me how Tarja can sing these classical/opera songs in different languages, including ones she isn't fluent in, and still sing so spectacularly at this level. As you said in your reaction, this is Tarja's singing at her best. Brilliant. brilliant. brilliant. 💛🧡❤Thank you for the reaction and thank you for the suggestion Petra.

Tarja can sing whatever she wants. But when the Finnish nightingale go full operatic its epic. The unique voice hits so hard in the soul. The goosebumps arrive whether you want it or not. Tarja simply the best ❤

Thank you so much Petra for requesting this, one of my favorite arias. It is not a fireworks type aria: all of it turns on beauty of tone, legato (the ability to sing long phrases without breaks) and expressiveness. I have heard this aria by many top professional opera singers and Tarja's performance remains one of my favorites. If you want a reference point, try Renee Fleming, Aida Garifullina or Patricia Janeckova. Tarja has a range of 3.5 octaves, which is more than some opera singers have and she also has this dark timber, which only few sopranos have. Singing a full opera requires stamina in the sense that the voice needs to project over the orchestra without being amplified. It takes years of dedication to this way of singing to develop capacity to store air in the body and project. Tarja has great breath support and control already and a big, rich voice. If she decided to go that route, no doubt she would be great but why not have the diversity? Final word regarding "the beat" part of this: Mike does solos on classical pieces, for instance Dvorak's New World Symphony (another favorite). Check it out, I think you will like it.

Okay. The mermaid falls in love with the prince and sacrifices her beautiful voice for him. He betrays her and loses her. She still sings songs about him. In the end, the prince goes looking for her, apologizes to her and gives up everything, including his life, to be with her.
What does it remind me of? The question is what has already happened and what is yet to happen and whether the prince is a pirate or a viking.
Tarja is perfect as usual. When I'm dying, I'd like her to sing for me, too.

Tarja is one of my most favourite singers. I love operatic voices. Czech language may be pretty difficult to pronounce correctly for someone who speaks totally different language, such as Finnish.
For this particular aria, I strongly suggest you to check a young Slovak soprano singing it. Her name is Patricia Janečková (pronounced as Patritzia Yanechkova). Sadly, she died of cancer in 2023, just four months after she got married. She was only 25. 😢
    Patricia JANEČKOVÁ - RUSALKA
And one more amazing performance from when she was just 17:
Patricia JANEČKOVÁ: "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" (Jacques Offenbach - Les contes d' Hoffmann)

Thank you! Great reaction! Beautiful song!
I can not really say which voice of Tarja do I prefer... her voice in general is perfect❤ But I completely understand why you love her classical voice the most.
Tarja always blows my mind! Her voice introduced me to metal and I never realised before how someone can control so well two different styles like Tarja does, metal and classical. The perfect compo.
I don’t think that there is any other artist who is in such balance with these worlds as she is.🥰
Tarja always says that she is not an opera singer, but still classically trained. I am not well enough trained nor too familiar with opera music, so I don't hear any difference between how Tarja sings opera songs compared to "real" opera singers singing them (if there are any). All that I can differentiate are the colours of people's voices.
So I don't know how she sings compared to opera singers.
This is just something that I have been wondering.

    • @PetraPola

I agree with you on everything. I usually don't even mention how beautiful Tarja's voice is in my comments, because I take it for granted.
Tarja once mentioned that she could sing an entire opera, but she would have to prepare for it because an opera singer sings without a microphone.
And it's exactly as you say: Tarja sings opera, she sings softly almost without an operatic voice, she sings rock, she sings in a chest voice and switches between these voices. I know it doesn't always sound perfect. Some anti-fans say she is a mediocre opera singer. I don't see that there. And even if that were the case, what opera singer could sing so many other kinds of songs.
I am not saying that Tarja is the best in the world and perfect in everything she does, nor is every performance of hers perfect.
Her diversity and desire to break and push the boundaries between genres and constantly improve, that's what I love about her. I also listen to many kinds of music, but I love the kind of music the most, bold, with some experimental elements. Tarja is not an artist of one genre and one voice.

@@alexandra-md5he My understanding is that the only difference between her and calling herself an opera singer is that an opera singer sings without a microphone. But I would also need someone to confirm it for me, because I don't understand singing.

    Thanks for the great reaction.
Mike plays in other pieces, but there's just no room for drums in this operatic piece. This concert included different types of songs: operatic and originally rock.
This song is very iconic for our country. The entire opera was also filmed, it is a magical but tragic fairy tale. The story is really very similar to Andersen's The Little Mermaid, where on the contrary the Little Mermaid dies to save the prince.
It must have been brutally difficult for Tarja to learn to sing in Czech. Although, of course, Czech is not perfect, it is very, very good, including our "ř", which is the most difficult letter for foreigners.
Tarja also often sings Silent Night in Czech at Christmas concerts in my country.
This concert took place in Zlín, where I also saw Tarja for the first time in 2008 on her first solo rock tour.
And LOL, don't worry about goofing. I wanted it uncut, it's uncut. 😆I appreciate it.
Here is lyrics for the song in English:
Moon, high and deep in the sky
    Your light sees far,
You travel around the wide world,
    and see into people's homes.
    Moon, stand still a while
and tell me where is my dear.
    Tell him, silvery moon,
    that I am embracing him.
    For at least momentarily
let him recall of dreaming of me.
    Illuminate him far away,
and tell him, tell him who is waiting for him!
If his human soul is, in fact, dreaming of me,
    may the memory awaken him!
    Moonlight, don't disappear, disappear!

How was Tarja's pronunciation in this song? It is always easier to learn to sing in another language (not that it's actually easy to do that😅) than to learn to speak

    • @PetraPola
      @PetraPola 3 месяца назад +3

@@tuuli4002 First of all, I want to say that her pronunciation is great, and it is quite great even for someone who has lived in the Czech Republic for years and actively speaks. Sometimes Tarja omits the "ř" and pronounces it differently, but that's a really hard letter. In the Czech Republic, we also pronounce some vowels much wider and softer than Tarja does. I'm not a linguist so I can't tell you all the differences, but here is version sung by a Czech singer ruclips.net/video/Yytsw4eoQQs/видео.html
You can compare. Although I don't really like the word "compare" in connection with Tarja. This song is also sung by many Slovak women. Slovak is very similar to Czech and Slovaks and Czechs understand each other very well, but the pronunciation is also different. By that I mean that very few people sing it in perfect Czech.

      @PetraPola Thank you, so much!!🙏🏻🙏🏻
I am always very interested in languages.
I think the hardness of her pronunciation comes from the Finnish language since Finnish is very hard, rough, language when it comes to pronunciations. You can hear it in her accent when she speaks English as well.

    • @PetraPola
      @PetraPola 3 месяца назад +1

@@tuuli4002 Yes, we all carry the burden of our language. Don't want to hear my English. I actually love Tarja's accent: a mix of Finnish, English and Argentinian Spanish. Now I would like the opinion of a Spaniard on how Argentinian Spanish differs from European Spanish.

@PetraPola Yes, I too have quite a thick Finnish accent... it is hard to shake😅

She began studying music at the academy, specializing in church singing. Soon after, she joined Tuomas Holopainen's acoustic project. The original acoustic music was soon replaced by heavy metal, and Tarja became a member of Nightwish. But as the band's popularity grew and new albums and tours were added, Tarja felt increasingly tired of switching between studying and participating in the group. She also battled jet lag from frequent touring for concerts. But her teachers supported her and persuaded her to continue to stick to classical music. She decided to transfer to the vocal music course at the campus in Helsinki. But then she found out how many prejudices there are in the world of classical music. She realized that she would never be accepted as a classical singer because of her participation in Nightwish. She has faced questions about why she is studying classical singing at all when she is touring the world with her heavy metal band.
She wanted to continue studying classical music, but she didn't want to give up rock either. She decided to study in Germany, as she had been learning German since the first grade in primary school. She entered the music university Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Karlsruhe, majoring in art song. She spent two years under the tutelage of the Japanese mezzo-soprano Mitsuko Sirai, to whom she owes the flexibility of her voice. The singer describes that although she already knew the world of classical music and knew something about singing, after the first lesson she felt like she knew nothing at all. Towards the end of 2002, when she had only one last concert left to receive her diploma, her mother fell ill with cancer. Tarja decided to stay with her. "I felt that my mother needed me more than I needed a piece of paper on my wall," she writes in her book. She has also proven many times that she is capable of playing concerts, so she said goodbye to her studies in Germany.
