  • The housing crisis in Ireland has been a burning political issue since 2008. With a shortage of 250,000 homes for a country of just over 5 million inhabitants, the market has become saturated. And as the country’s population continues to grow each year with the arrival of new asylum seekers, tensions are rising.

The government in Ireland behaved recklessly over the last few years. Far too many came into the country and the generous welfare system made them leave even other European countries for Ireland. We were seen as the soft touch.

The first 155 Irish convicts (from County Cork) arrived in Sydney in 1791. An estimated further 7000 Irish convicts were sent to Australia during the remaining years of transportation, which ended in 1868. In addition to convicts, more than 300,000 other Irish settlers migrated to Australia between 1840 and 1914.

Tricky one because on one hand Ireland deserves its own home for the Irish but on the other hand Ireland has the biggest percentage of people living outside of their own nation on earth. 100 million Irish people and their descendants on earth but only 6 million live in Ireland. In 1900 1 in 2 people born in Ireland were living outside of Ireland.

I had to leave Ireland in 2012, was told there was no housing for us, still have the paperwork they sent me, when we were leaving the government were putting south Asians into brand new houses, we moved back last year, worked every day, never took welfare off anyone, because my mother is getting on in years, we now live in a caravan with no running water and electricity, while Ukrainians with their BMW SUVs, stay in luxury hotels, but it can't be the system that's wrong it must be me,
