Not only is this a great tutorial video on KiCad, but an example of how a tutorial video should be made. Unobtrusive background music, good pacing, professional looking edits, and an enthusiastic and clear narration. A cracking experience all'round!

+Simon Ellwood You're perfectly correct. I made a mistake in editing the video, thanks for pointing that out! Also, the relationship between the netlist and footprint association file (.cmp) was not obvious to me when I started with KiCad; always learning. :D

For a couple of years now I realised I needed to move to a better pcb package as I am struggling with the smaller components (Im using BM2). Dreaded this move (as I know BM so well I do it in my sleep) but always figured Kicad would be a good option to go to. Holy s**t in a few hours Im converted. Only a couple things I find difficult. Can track widths be changed on the fly? I do plenty rf stuff and need to change often, sometimes even 6 or 7 times in one track as I go under various components. Secondly when I flip TH components to the other side the pads move to a different location and don't line up with the pins. Is this a bug?
    Thanks again.

    The best tutorial ever!
Instead of skipping forward all the time, I keep skipping backward and re-watching to see what I missed. Also great in that this is excellent for people who are already using other packages (I used ultiboard, protel, eagle and altium) and I was just looking for an introduction how to create a board outline, route, change track width and some more. These 20+ minutes saved me a lot of clicking around.
    Thanks!

Tip I got from another video: You can have the software automatically place the tracks for you to avoid having to do it by hand. I found it a bit tedious when I was doing it myself.
The button is "Mode track: autorouting". It is at the top under the drop down menus, 3rd from the left on my version; click it and it should stay lit. Make sure you the mouse cursor is on (not on the add tracks and vias button). Right click on your PCB screen and select Autoroute > Automatically Route all Footprints

+Beso Undilashvili Thanks! The background color used for the editing area of the schematic capture and PCB layout tools can be set in the preferences dialog within EESchema and PCBnew. The dark user interface (window borders, icons, menus) is a GTK theme; you'll need to be running Linux and set the theme in your system control panel. The details will depend on which distribution you're running. I don't know if this is possible in Windows or OSX, sorry.

Thank you for the video. My understanding is that the software should perform automatic track routing. I am not familiar with the KiCAD software, so I created my schematics using online free software EasyEDA. This EasyEDA would not allow me to see the actual tracks. I would like to see the actual copper traces on the PCB for each layer. Question - would I be able to load the Gerber files created in this EasyEDA into the KiCAD and see the actual copper traces? Also, can I import my schematics diagram from the EasyEDA into the KiCAD software? Thank you!

Tragically bad; irritating and totally un-necessary background music, much jumping around, and also: for an intro: you couldn't e.g. just pull a couple BJTs and caps and r's out of the library, to show us a multivibrator? Weird, that you felt the need to design your own part. If even the Intro needs a "build it from scratch", we should definitely not be looking at KiCAD.

This is a very much appreciated tutorial and I appreciate it. Should you make another ..., this was really too fast for me as I couldn't watch what you were doing and find the button/icon/etc on my screen. Maybe just instead of saying "do this" or "click that" say the word or button name. Just really so fast I had to stop, rewind, and repeat like 20 times in the first 5 mins. Really appreciate the tutorial though - thanks.

    • @WindsorSchmidt
      @WindsorSchmidt  9 лет назад +1

javier v. Power & ground planes are a common use for zones, but you can assign the zone to any defined net/signal. You might want to do some research on your own to decide if you need to use filled zones a.k.a copper pours for your PCB. Even if you have a low power design, filled zones can be used for heat-sinking, easy current return on a ground plane, or they may be required if you need to deal with EMI regulations. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_pour Good luck!

    I dont understand this:
after you added all the named pins you draw a box
    indicating the plastic package TSSOP20
but you do not specify any width and length for
the box - so the STM´s footprint will very likely be
    too big or too small
how can I specify that the box should be 4.5 mm wide
and 6.5 mm long BEFORE I add it to the
    Elements Library ?

    • @WindsorSchmidt
      @WindsorSchmidt  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Gerald,
In this tutorial I am only showing the creation of schematic symbols, not the associated PCB footprint. The symbols have no bearing on the footprint. In this video I show how to link the symbol with a footprint from KiCad's standard library of footprints using CvPCB. To be clear, you don't use the schematic symbol editor (EESchema) to specify the physical size of the component; you'd use the PCB footprint editor for that. I wanted to limit the length of this video, so I decided to omit the creation of a footprint, since many new electronic components on the market use footprints that are already defined in the standard library, making symbol creation the more critical operation here. I hope that helps you!

Pretty late, but this is such a great tutorial that's helped me break my procrastination on learning KiCAD/PCB design. Just been following each step on my own comp. What is the RP component? Is it just a resistor package? Was it a custom component or from KiCAD's in-built library?

Jackie Lui hi, yep you can find both resistor networks and resistor packs (discrete resistors in a single package) in the standard KiCad symbol library.

thanks for your video, but it is not actually in 2021 year yet. i think so? because KiCad have already had another better interface and features. especially nightly releases....

You're right. This video is less relevant now, especially with a KiCad 6 release coming soon.

This is great - I only actually need to make one PCB, I'll probably never use this software again, so I might well download this and just copy the steps! LOL :D Cheers man!

You may only need one PCB now, but soon you'll be overcome with an intense, inexplicable desire to design more circuits and have them fabricated. I'm sorry; it's just too late to save you. KiCad has become your downfall. :D

Thank you very much for this. We needed a small board for an Arduino Pro Mini LoRaWAN node and with your video I was able to build a board. I will try cutting it on an Other Mill tonight. Thanks again for the quick and precise walk-thru.

Doug LaRue Awesome! I'm glad it helped. I am still learning a lot myself.

When I'm looking at the 3D output it isn't showing the components on the board. Only the PCB design is coming. Any settings required for that?

+saumya gupta Sorry for the late reply. If you have this problem using your own design, you can try loading one of the example files distributed with KiCad to test with. If you are making your own new footprints you will have to associate them with 3D models (.wrl). Also KiCad has some configuration for filesystem paths that need to be properly set for KiCad to locate your 3D models. Hope that helps!

How do u make your Kicad style black?

How did you make the rectangular connector with the header pins in? You glossed over that as you skipped what you were doing lol. Thanks 👍

That part is one of hundreds already available in KiCad's standard library of parts; I didn't create it. You may want to search for "kicad create footprint" to see how to make new ones.

Hi, Schmidt. I'm trying to make a PCB design directly without making a schematic first but when I try to connect all the vias and tracks it's impossible for me to do it. It doesn't allow me to do it. Could you please give me an idea?

+Miguel Figuereo you weren't specific enough describing your problem for me to help. The PCB layout tool (Pcbnew) does allow working without a net-list from the schematic capture tool.
