Part three of an introduction to synthesis by Dean Friedman back in the day. When he's not twiddling LFO knobs and envelope sliders, Dean's an indie recording artist with a slew of international chart hits and critically acclaimed albums to his credit. You can see what he's currently up to on his website www.deanfriedma... and his RUclips channel / deanfriedman
Dean Friedman is the patron saint of 80's synth technology.

Kei Korono thanks again
seriously, have my babies.
I was right expecting you helping us in this third part
You're a god
@@xMaverickFPS Hahaaaa !
that guy is seriously the shit
Even though I disagree on the "seven main synth components" (I would identify five or less); nonetheless, I really thing the presenter of this video series is a wonderful man, with great enthusiasm towards synthesizers, great knowledge, and great presentation skills. Why do we have so very few people like this?
Totally agree, he knows his stuff, knows how to pass it on and how to keep your attention.
I just finished all 3 videos & they have been a huge blessing. Out of the shitton I've watched on production in general, his are the most entertaining & fun to learn...I have already learned a great deal from them & applied the knowledge from them on to VSTs & patch creation..This series is awesome to me on so many levels, as I also happen to be fascinated by the 80's lol...Amazing that almost 3 decades later everything is still useful & relevant today!..Dean kicks serious ass!
I agree. Thanks to this, I'm diving into my MPC with renewed fascination at all the things I can do with its engine now!
48:57 I love this guy!
thumbs up if you love the intro/outro music!
Its SICK.
love the low db 1980s telephony feeding back into Deans post edits.
You can tell that at 24,883 people are more serious about learning synthesis than the 207k people who watched the first video.
The first video doesn't even scratch the surface of Synthesis. Only shows you how to understand the surface.
+Tech “Nika” Core I prefer to think about ourselves as "deep divers", and those 207k as "tourists on the beach".
+vjrei who are you?
vjrei Who has the inferiority complex?
The person trying to troll someone who isn't even bothering him, or someone who made a simple observation?
SPECIALLY LOVE
just finished all three of these.. feeling productive
The geeked out 80's retro-nerd factor alone makes this worth watching. The knowledge he imparts is as relevant today as it was then. Gawd, I wish I had this tape set back then! It would have cleared up so much for me! This is a gem!
This Dude is God of BaSiCs.!!!.. Hail Dean...!! No modern videos could explain the basics with examples so good...!!!!. If DEAN is reading this comment... You are a hell good of a tutor.
Watched all 3 and it's amazing. I came for the jokes, stayed for the synthesis.
The best synth tutorial I've ever seen, hands down.
Simply sensational training courses. I've learned so much about Synthesizers it's not even funny. Thank you!!! I wonder how Dean is doing now-a-days!? Hope he's still alive and kicking and cracking funny jokes. Good times!
+deanfriedman this was the best Introduction course on synthesis ever! I've tried a lot of modern courses but your approach helped me to learn basic understanding so good! You need to get back to teaching you're naturally talented teacher! Greetings from Israel =)
Probably the most informative synth videos I have watched. So good , so well explained and easy to follow . Will keep watching all three episodes over and again . Thanks for upload
This is what I've been missing for years, it feels like going to school again in a pleasant way. Thanks for the clear explanations.
brilliant! now on to the DX II FD flick...
Just graduated to part 3 of this series! This has been soo informative. So happy Dean let these be publicly released
I love how he was like, “these ancient, old ass analog synths”. I bet he would never have guessed then that the analogs would be worth a lot more than those digital synths today. Or that some of the analogs would be worth more than modern analog synths.
Did he make a mistake at 52:53 when he says frequency modulation is tremolo? I thought vibrato referred to frequency/pitch modulation and tremolo referred to amplitude modulation
What an awesome guy! And how did he know I snoozed at that exact moment??! lol
Oh & how could I forget, Dean was the originator of Dubstep too..The next time I hear someone say it broke out of dark UK Garage in the late 90's-early 2000's I'm gonna be like. nope this dude in NYC was making it back in the 80's & send them the links...bout time he gets some credit for innovating a genre =P hahaha
Just watched this for the 3rd time. Totally excellent and great for those of us who missed out on a whole era. Thanks again for uploading!
While it's been said many times before here, this guy is an amazing teacher. It took twice as long to go through all three videos because I kept having to stop and try out what he just taught me on my own synth VSTs. I'm really excited to go exploring on my own and not just looking for synth VSTs with great built-in patches.
Look at presets in VSTs and recreate them in VCV :)
This is impressive i've learn a lot i've finally understood so many concepts of synthesis, i was always feeling that sound design was a limitation in creating my music, but now im more than ready to start crafting my own sounds, thanks dean!!.
i watched the 3 parts..the best professor that i have!! awesome!
Just finished 3rd part. 18 hours well spent!
Usable knowledge yesterday/today/tomorrow. The best intro on youtube!
What a great tutorial. I'm really thankful to have found this out here.
Its in your ears! hehehe
salud para tod@s!!!
This has been great. It's amusing (mostly unintentional) reminds me of the 80s and I've never had it explained to me better. The penny's finally dropped thanks to Dean Friedman!
Wow what a great series. I've always been around keyboards and synthesizers, so I knew all the terms and kind of what they do, but this has really helped me understand how it really works. Thanks Dean.
This series is great, and all relevant today. Thanks for uploading.
What really stands out is how far "video" related technology has advanced since the 80's, and how LITLLE synthesizer technology has! Basically, stuff just got cheaper.
Thanks. Very usefull vidéos.
"hello hello, wake up wake up ! Lets turn this bass sound into an helicopter" lmao why would you do that ??
very good video series. There are some inconsistencies, such as identifying 3 types of envelopes, and only one type of LFO as the 7 basic elements of synthesizer. I'd say that the synthesizer has 5 basic elements: oscillator, filter, amplifier, envelope, and LFO. Also, identifying timbre as one of three elements of sounds is misleading, because timbre is nothing else but sum of different frequencies, and frequencies are nothing else than volumes over time. So, sound is only volumes. Simple.
Thanks for uploading these...very enjoyable. Dean keeps you interested all the way through,,.hats off to him!
Things get weird at 25:40
Lol I was like wtf
that's how expensive synths were on those days.
That's the least you can say :) Foot comedy.
where'd his shoe go?!
I am also grateful that you uploaded this. Thank You.
I made it to part 3!!!
For those who love this series and are now asking if Dean Friedman is still alive and kicking!!!! Well I hope so as here are his 2020 UK tour dates :) www.list.co.uk/event/150464-dean-friedman/, Why not add your country's dates, or better still buy a ticket and go and personally say thank you :)
Just brilliant. So helpful, well-paced and informative. Thanks matrixsynth for posting this series!
I HAD A YAMAHA DX 7 BUT NO CARTRIDGES. IT WAS A PAIN TO PROGRAM ANYTHING. BUT IT DID HAVE NICE QUALITY SOUNDS...
Lucky students you'd think to have ever got to study under this supercool guy Dean Friedman.
Btw looks seriously like Paul McCartney circa Let it Be.
11:10
M83 in the studio for his new album
Great vid! I'd love to be on the mailing list you spoke about.
Excellent videos. i wish this guy had made more. Like he could have done a 60 x mins video on each of the 4 x keyboards he is demonstrating on.
And with a bit of adjustment we can make this sound like a convincing electric guitar on this ancient analog synthesizor (twiggles knobs adjusts envelopes, LFOs, etc) and hey presto, it still sounds like an electronic synthesizor ? Oh, crap, anyway you get the general idea...
Awesome videos! Thank you for uploading! And thanks to the old good Dean
This is invaluable!
thank you for uploading this, I've learned a lot !
very cool series...now i will try to apply what i've learn here on to my gaia sh-01,system1,mininova,minilogue and minibrute...thanks a lot, both to the presenter of this series as to the uploader..thank u very much
Thanks for naming everything you own. You could of just said to my synths instead.
truthishere dealwiit
^an example of jealousy from 3 years ago!
Dean Friedman = best teacher :D
Very valuable knowledge here. Thanks for sharing it with us.
It Rocks, basics very well presented.
Where can I get one of those awesome New York School of Synthesis t shirts?
hes in his late 50s early 60s now by those synths and the amiga 500 in the back ground of the first video as the roland d50 and amiga 500 didn't come out until 1987
the korg m1 wasn't on the market until 1988
Gracias Dan! Saludos desde Chile
making every sound I want on all my synths, after watching these video's.
that's an amazingly well kempt beard
Yeah now I'm going to play around with retrologue (or whatever synth xD) in cubase :D thanks for this series! Very useful also if you already know most of the stuff. Never had such a good and clear explanation of how synthesizers and sound synthesis works. Just played around a bit. With the knowledge learned in those videos I'm sure I will be able to produce better synth sounds :D
he somehow keeps it interesting. Not that i'm not interested but study can get boring at times.
thank you so much these are fantastic and fun
Dean, give yourself a bonus....and I'll approve it!
50:38 - 50:43 LMAO classic
HAhaaaa !!
why is the video sound in tremolo? lol
anyway, thank for this amazing lecture
25:39 the mark of a true synthesist is a sturdy foot.
"...or you fell asleep and left the VCR running" 😂😂😂
thanks, so much for these!
this guy is great
@ 0:22 My Nord can't even perfom Velocity Sensitive Pitch Shift !! Should have kept my Korg M1 !!
YEAH, Dean!
He rules
48:58...that actually worked lol
This dude looks Like Paul McCartney From the cover of "McCartney" album cover LOL
like in this photo: www.google.com/search?q=mccartney+1+album&biw=1344&bih=731&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiE4Y-96NHOAhWB_R4KHYDZDO4Q_AUIBigB#imgrc=6FRDQ9D-OZhDcM%3A
this is fking great, such a gem! big thanks
Magnific videos!!! Thanks for sharing (Y)
Is there a similar series for learning about different effects?
50:39 heeey :D
Very good video series. It would be more helpful to have some music theory background, like why there are 12 tones on the keyboard, the harmonic series (Part 1 only shows this for a few seconds, not enough, this need far more coverage) etc. Without any music theory background I find these videos difficult to follow, or apply to music. Even if you care about the sound itself, the harmonic series lesson is needed. So, great videos, but need some additional study to make those meaningful.
whilst you are correct, to simply say sound is make up of volumes is a little pointless for the purposes of characterising how to describe differences in sound parameters.
the definitions provided are there to illustrate concepts to be logically elegant.
This video series was incredible! Feels like I just learned a new language. I hope someone got paid for this. Wow, I'm impressed...that's effective teaching!! Thank you much!!!
that moment when he play with his foot .... hahah
WOWZERS!
ive never seen a bass turned into a helicopter before
I'd like to see him change a helicopter sound into a bass. That would be more useful to me.
Lets turn this nice bass sound into a helicopter :D
probably in new york... 30 years ago
make it 40
I
here come those who really want it lol. thank him so much. now i can do things with my serum
I loved how rubbish the velocity sensitivity demo was, really expressive haha! Like loud, or quiet, nothing inbetween!
it's breath sound changing to organ sound not cello.
Found it :)
Noise? The old lady next door would say everything I play on this thing is just noise!
great
Noise sounds like this: "plays dubstep song"
"Dean Dean"...? :|
:D :D
ya got that?
Walker, Texas Ranger !! lol
0:25:39 BARE FOOT BARE FOOT BARE FOOT BARE FOOT
dean unfortunately died from being burnt alive...:( he was making a beat and it was too flame
