Dear Jay, I'm looking to have a VW trike. I'm a 65 year old biker who had a stroke back in 2012. The stroke has left me with a useless right arm, hand, and shoulder---along with a weak right leg. My balance also was affected which makes it impossible to ever ride my two wheelers again!! Since I've cheated all the nay-sayer's predictions for my recovery (like ever living alone away from the nursing home, and also driving again unrestricted) Now I want to be able to ride again too. Because I don't have use of my right arm and shoulder to counter-balance my upper torso, as with using handlebars, I can't imagine being capable of handling a "standard" trike---such as a Harley or a Goldwing where I'd be sitting upright overtop the engine. That geometry puts my center of gravity too high up, and would leave me without anything to hold my upper body from flying forward from even just applying brakes. People with two arms don't understand that limitation. I was looking, and there seems to be quite a few VW trikes, some for sale----but they all mostly look like junk!! They remind me mostly of where guys will take an otherwise pretty good bike, and PURPOSELY turn it to look like a piece of shit the Beverly Hillbilly's might have!! They call these dogs "RAT-BIKES" Now I'm nothing special, and my current bikes are old but they look nice. I don't want junk!! I did find 2 trikes (both sold--for 15k and 18k respectively) These units were gorgeous with fiberglass fenders and fairings, with wind-covers around the driver's legs, and a windshield, custom paint, pretty chrome all over the engines, and chrome mag wheels. One was a 2000 CC, the other was a 1600 CC. I need an automatic Xmission, probably a good donor car would be a square back 412 ? sedan from the mid to late 70's. Both these trikes looked professionally built and were magnificent. I would still require some type of steering, more like a steering wheel, like on a car, since I must motor just using my left hand. The pedals would operate like in a car, with my throttle on my right foot, and my brake action would be my left pedal controlling a master cylinder into a 60/40 valve for both the front and rear brakes. Do you think you might be willing to build me one?? I didn't know there was so much fabrication necessary to build one, until I followed along on your build of Jon's machine. But I really like how you described all the beefy construction you do and why. Could you write me back with particulars and a price maybe? I'm Michael Hesterberg and my E mail is Thanks
Can you tell what size are the plates that bolt to the neck? I have to go 8 inches wide to fit my front wheel. Thanks
