    1079 goes well for high eminem voice so you push the preamp then give high boost with it (eq routed after the preamp on the 1079) so Its enjoyable, also the preamp saturation gonna help with de essing, dirty rap voice, and dynamic on the way in

    great video, You were spot on about all the elements. the most important elements though, sadly nobody can really access it, is the way drums do magical, mysterious things when pushed into the red on 2" tape. Dre's snares used to smack you you in the face. You that moment his beat kicks after the intro; (guess who's back..) boom! smack! boom! smack!. i always focused on his bottom end a lot, but I think his magic was also up there in the mids to highs. I was listening to his stuff after watching that video you mentioned. certain things I noticed; like, I don't even think he used de-essors at all. He used those sibilance's in the voice like a high hat or snare; i guess he though "hell, why limit the frequency range?". Heaps of magic stuff is going on up in those highs on Dre classics. One note though, have the best rappers alive in the booth when your doing that. i think that's a reason he liked Em; super tight/ nasally mid and high voice; perfect for Dre's vision. Nate Dogg too; super tight, deep voice, but with that miraculous buzzing sound all through the register he had, and those sibilance's were syncopating the beats like a damn Jazz drummer. Whilst other amazing rap of the time seemed to be going for muffled and overcrowded in a cool way, Dre pretty much let the thing shine and gave the ears room to breath.
    Like you said, you gotta bring your musical brain to the table. I reckon Dre saw those highs as an asset; like a sparkling, freshly coated Cadillac. And it seemed to work; that's un understatement. but, slamming the reds into tape. I don't think there's an outboard piece of gear that can mimic that, unless that outboard gear is a 2" tape machine. Damn. I use tape saturation and all that fun stuff on my computer mixes, and the results do the trick, but the plugins haven't mastered that tape thing in the bass drum or snare yet, because digital distortion in very, very not good (unless it's an effect your going for) tape distortion was great. they did invent these new tube in the form of little chip for guitar and voice equipment, so maybe; they invent something affordable in the outboard that you can through before it hits that limit of the digital daw.

      Neve 542 tape simulators, I think they do justice to that tape sound. I have a pair of those they are insane

      @@mixlikenix That is pretty amazing. I was not aware there were any outboard tape saturators. It's kind of pretty logical thing to just make one though. I'm glad it's Neve but my wallet isn't hehe. I just wonder which came first, the outboard or the software? The software is kind of an oxymoron, so I wonder. They need the hardware to do the simulating process, but I guess they could synthesize it all from studying through digital tools what was actually happening.. The plugins are a great tool for playing with subtle overdrives, overtones and thickness etc though.

    • @mixlikenix
      @mixlikenix  Год назад

      @@markeric1337 Plugins are incredible when it comes to subtle saturation I recall 10 years ago plugins couldn't stand next to hardware.
      The playing field is now level, the differences are marginal, and 10 years from now I think the plugins will be leaps and bounds better than hardware.
      There is FEW Hardware saturators, but the EL Fatso was one of the first quality outboard saturators. It's very versatile and has some options for bus and tracking compression.

      @markeric1337 Год назад

      @@mixlikenix okay. Yeah, I guess I just miss the sound of recordings in the 90s. Maybe it has more to do with having limited resources. Like Dre, his 90's stuff was made up of really quite a small amount of instruments going on. I felt the Compton album was quite clustered compared. The amount of things possible through plugins. You know, you can get perfect reproductions of mellotrons and expensive pianos, drums, classic compressors etc. For a couple of thousand bucks you can buy millions of dollars worth of gear, which is great. but I think things are just thrown into tracks more and more these days just because you can, Like, if the Beatles wanted orchestra sounds, they had to hire a damn orchestra, so you really had to be sure you had thought about it and needed it. I think Dre himself just has an inimitable musical mind like any great composer/ producer etc.
      On the plugin tape emulators, I think because I'm always recording acoustic drums and I'm a drummer myself, I see issues that concern my personal tastes; not make or break a song issues, but just stuff that tape would help solve; to my ears mainly. I'd have to understand how each snare or tom and cymbals react to tape to fully achieve the results. Tape just does it.
      Increasingly jazz musicians are going back to live takes on 1/4' tape machines at expensive studios to amazing results.
      You should check out something like "senseless apprentice" by nirvana, recorded by Steve albini. That's all really instruments, no samples. The album before changed the rock world and sounded amazing, but the band were embarrassed by how polished it was with the sampled snare and bass drum. Next album, they went to Steve Albini, a scientist on the art of tape. Nine inch nails use him for drum recordings, which tells you something if the master of digital goes back to him.

      Don't get me wrong FL Studio is a great DAW, imo all DAWs sound the same.
      It's not about the CAR but about the driver, it's about the DAW it's about the artist.
      ---
      Originally I was going to make this a FL Template,
      Then I thought, I WOULD NEVER even do a whole mix in FL Studio myself, why tf would I even suggest that to my subscribers.
      I love FL Studio I've made hundreds of beats in it but
      A lot of those FL Studio youtubers are incredibly toxic, love giving misinformation, and the only thing they got going for them is nice video editing. 😂
      I'm trying to stay in my lane if you get me
