Maragle South. Fallow rut. 2024

- I was lucky enough to draw a spot in the 2024 ballot for Maragle South state forest.
I was even luckier to draw the 10th to 13th of April. To many this is the peak of the Fallow deer rut and dates that are highly sort after for this forest. With only 2 spots allocated at a time, the number of hunters in the forest allowed at any one time is extremely low.
Even with the odds slightly stacked in my favor, I was not going to take this trip for granted. A recce the month before, cameras placed all over the forest and many hours on google earth and Avenza were spent in preparation.
Maragle is probably the closest a public land hunter will ever come to private land hunting.
The deer were plentiful and the rut was at its peak.
What followed over the following 6 days was a trip I will never forget.
Hope you enjoy.
Amazing video mate thanks for sharing. And thanks for showing that you don’t have to shoot as many deer as you see. Very inspiring! That’s how it’s done
Thanks mate, my thoughts exactly. Each to their own but for me it’s about the total experience while out there.
Great work Dave. Good hunt, good shooting, good video.
Thanks Steve
Knew it was coming up to winter when I saw the shot of the Red Robin, an old farmer/neighbour on the Southern Tablelands always said to expect the cold weather's coming as soon as you see the Red Robins appearing. I'm a bit north of Goulburn.
Hadn’t heard that one. Love those old farmers sayings, a ring around the moon means rain, horses tail cloud pointing at you means a storm. Ill remember the Robin one , thats a great one!
Nice video but a question why not remove some of the poor heads to improve genetics ?
I hunt for meat firstly, I only actively look for big bucks for the rut period.
Really interesting question though, Im not sure you could manage the genetics in a public forest, it would take every hunter who goes there to be on the same page. I can see this being a much bigger discussion. Have you asked that on any FB hunting pages? Well worth a post.
Yeah, wow! Great hunt mate and well put together. Animals everywhere, and to witness that interaction at close range... can't beat it. 10☆
It was a hell of a rut mate, not sure I’ll be that lucky again!
Thanks heaps mate. That was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Wow! Dream hunt. Great work mate, amazing footage, awesome video.
Thanks for all the advice mate 👍
Did you have a hunting mate with you bro, to share the hunt with? Mint vid. Cheer to your success. 🍻😎
Not on this one mate, most of my hunts I usually go alone. Cheers for the cheers 👍
Amazing hunt and amazing footage. Well done! Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I got lucky with the ballot and the dates. Cheers for watching it
I thought you could only take one buck per year down in maragle south?
Gday Michael, as far as I could see and what I was told, that rule wasn’t in place this year, but if I did mess up, I’ll cop it and wear the consequences. No one to blame but myself.
Congratulations, seems like a bit of luck and hard work paid off.
Thats the state forest hunting motto 🤣👍
I was there late march nothing like that lol no croaking no where near that many scrapes it's crazy what a few weeks difference makes
100%. I did a recce start of March. Deer were in opposite end of the forest and 90% were does. A few weeks changes everything!!
So happy for you Dave! Great video. Congrats!!
As close as public gets to private 😁👍
were you harvesting meat as well or just heads ?
I always take the meat, it makes up most of our protein at home. Nothing wrong with the meat on a rutty buck, butcher it correctly and it’s delicious.
Nice work. How do you register for the ballot
NSW Dpi send out an email prior to the rut to enter the ballot around Feb I think. If you have an R license, you should get the email.
Awesome footage and congrats on the ballot draw.
Thanks mate, had to make a video of it. Not many of us will ever get a chance to hunt that forest at the peak of the rut. The hunting gods were smiling on me, thats for sure.
Love the content mate 👍 how good are croaking stags?!
Thanks mate. And yeah, best sound in the forest 😁👍
Awesome job, thanks for the video Dave
Thanks Huon

great footage man
Thanks man! Loving the NZ stuff you’ve been putting up lately. Looked like a hell of a trip.
Epic vid!
Cheers
The investment in the new Sony has paid for itself after that footage nice work Dave and well done on winning the state forest lottery.
Def faults with the camera but its ok, the zoom makes up for its faults and thanks, was extremely lucky with the ballot draw!
@@dtbadventures I have seen a lot of good reviews on the SONY DSC-RX10 IV I believe that is what you purchased what are the issues you are having.
@@michaelhourican7211 focus throws out in manual of its own accord every so often. SLog2 is rubbish to use and color correct and the chip cant process Slog3 apparently. Also the native color profile always needs adjusting. The camera was released 7 yrs ago and they have stopped firmware updates so you are buying an old tech camera. Sony are not making an Rx5 which is a shame.
Still a good camera for its weight. I use to shoot Canon 5d with 400 L series lens but bugger carrying that around with everything else 🤣
@@dtbadventures yes I am currently running a Z9 with a 100-400 for the long stuff and a Panasonic 4K video camera for long hikes it’s a lot to haul a round but I’m a photographer first hunter second.
🤙
Cheers
