  • The Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad is a classic ore hauling railroad in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We caught the LS&I at their ore dock in Marquette Michigan throughout the day. We used our drone to achieve spectacular views of this operation. This is something not often viewed from this angle, so it was truly a fantastic way to watch the LS&I!

    Fascinating, thanks, Guys! I've been to the Marquette ore dock a few times, I never was able to watch the ships load up. Sometimes after dropping off their iron ore load in the South of the Great Lakes, these ships bring back a load of coal for the Marquette power plant which I noticed in the background of some of the shots. Many of the LS & I jennys have extensions round the top. They were built for Grade I & II ore, which is heavier & thus cannot be piled as high as the taconite being shipped here.

    congratulations for all ! beautiful footage which well explains the transportation system of ores rail/ship and full of admiration for the
    synchronization between train/ship and those who work hard to keep this activity going

    Everything about your video is amazing. Your narration is very well done. Your editing, including your audio dubbing is spot on. Best of all, of course, is your drone video; you use the drone as a camera platform to show action that you couldn't get otherwise. Keep up the great work!

    • @ajknaup3530
      @ajknaup3530 Год назад

      The short iron ore hoppers are referred to as "jennies." Iron ore is much more dense than, say coal or gravel; if you filled a 90 ton coal hopper with taconite it would likely fail. Having all that weight concentrated on 2 trucks would not be doing the track a favor, either! ( :

    • @ethanlamoureux5306
      @ethanlamoureux5306 6 лет назад

      Think of the time it would take to switch tracks, back up, disconnect the car, pull back out, switch tracks again, back up, pull out the empties, stop, switch tracks, back up to the lone car, reconnect, pull out, switch tracks, back up to the end, disconnect the car... much less waste to just haul it back and ask for a train with one less car.

    Great video and awesome clarity! Only one question i have tho. At about 8 mins into the video there seems to be a structure sunken in the water just on the other side of the coal loader. Is that a structure of something or a ship?

    • @clockbuilderhg
      @clockbuilderhg 7 лет назад +1

      That would be the remnants of the original LS&I wooden ore dock built in 1895. It was replaces by the existing dock in 1912.
