Hey Ali thank you for slowing down your process. I l-o-v-e how talk to yourself (actually to us). Not only is it entertaining, but it's incredibly informative! By hearing your inner dialog, it helps viewers understand why you're making your design decisions. You're one of the few art journal designers on RUclips that explains the pros and cons of the choices you're making in real time. By doing that, you're making every step of the process a teachable moment for us. You create quickly and spontaneously (making it look so deceptively quick and easy). By talking out loud you help us to think like an artist. In some of your other videos I notice that you don't edit out mistakes. You actually take the time to say, "Well, I didn't like how that turned out, so I did ______ ". You make the design process seem less intimidating and more playful and enjoyable. Your "go with the flow" nature proves that even talented, experienced designers can flub something up every now and then. But rather than panic and berate yourself, you demonstrate how to recover from those situations. [Your modeling paste ain't the only thing that's "flexible"!] You teach us how to make the most of any given situation. You're an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, AWESOME-SAUCE designer AND teacher! Your middle name should have been "Joy" (like your yellow TN). Thank you joyful Ali Brown!
Gloria! I am just absolutely overwhelmed by your comment. Thank you so much for your feedback and encouragement! One of the goals I have for 2018 is to offer some online classes for my followers. I struggle with thinkin' that I'm not 'good enough' to teach. So really, your detailed feedback has come at the perfect time! I feel a little more empowered to make online classes a reality. Thank you so much for your honesty and love! xoxo, Ali
That would be AWESOME!!! But you know...you are ALWAYS teaching, even if you're calling it "sharing"...it's actually both. I LOVE watching you! I learn so much. Thank you!
OMG, you are MORE than qualified! Besides your experience, your design instincts, artistic eye and communicative skills (you make things easy to understand--it's like you're anticipating the viewer's questions--like you're reading our minds), you're fascinating to watch! I think that's because of your authenticity, playful sense of wonder and your willingness to show your imperfection. You are willing to admit when you don't know something. And doesn't that make you a very wise person? Whereas "smart" people pretend to know everything, a wise person knows that, that's not possible. Another thing I love about you, is that you give credit to all the people whom you admire--those who have inspired you. Teachers should continue learning too. So YES, you should pursue your vision. You are MORE than enough! Have you ever read Benjamin Hoff's, "Tao of Pooh"? You're POOH BEAR (not in appearance, but in heart)!
Awesome video, loaded with good info.! I take all the little bits and artistic seedlings you shar and take them back to my own little plot of artistic space, plant them, nurture them, and watch them grow. Thank you Ali!
Hi Ali, could you please do a video on your new inks, would love to know more about them, and any videos from you are amazing, I get so happy when I get notifications of your videos xx
Tip-ins have indeed been around forever (regardless if it hasn't been called that) -- but I love that you give a shout-out to the person who introduced YOU to it :-) GREAT energy and video, as always. TFS! xo
I learned tip ins from working in a library. for us it is when you add a page to a book in a way that it looks like it was always there. usually we did it if a book had an edit... we'd cut out the old page and tip in (glue in) a replacement page or plate (image).
I have used modeling pastes for years and they''re great fun. If you want color, you don't "have" to mix color into the paste, but paint it after it dries and you can stain it as well.
You are a breath of fresh air! Such a sweetheart! Thank you for the inspiration! It makes me more comfortable journaling myself because I just DO and know that it is okay to just "do". Hugs
Hey Ali! It makes my You-Tube lovin' heart's day when I see you have a new video uploaded! Thanks for sharing. Would love more details about the inks you showed. They would make such nice friends for my Distress Stains! Oh, and your eye make-up was so "purdy," too😊!
I just love your videos! You make me smile. I bought a Selphy because of you. I'll send you the bill ;) And yes please, a video on those inks... stat!! Thanks for all you do.
Ali! OMG! I'm in San Antonio as well! Where did you get the distressed inks, haven't seen them. For my Fauxbonichi I've been using various paints and chalk colors. I was doing tip-ins and didn't know what I was doing, lol. Creativeness. I've been using composition books and pasting them together and then tip-ins on each outer side of the pages. Great tutorial by the way
hoping you see this question since this is one of your older videos.....but I buy my inserts from Paper Penguin and only order the tomie river paper....but when I water color that pages fall out....basically cause of the water and the paints the book falls apart. What inserts do you use and I enjoy good paper. Thanks for answering.
Ali Brown so do you buy those somewhere? I used to make them but stopped cause I just would rather spend my time doing something else. Also I emailed you on Etsy! And ready to shop and buy a print🤓. I’m the Robin that emailed you
Yay!!!! Love coming home from work to a new video from you!!! This was awesome...except I don't want to go to work tomorrow so I can go buy some of that paste stuff and play all day;) I would love to hear more about the inks too....I have now gotten quite the collection of stains but feel like I'm still failing in the purty background area:/ UGH! Also, a million thank yous for the beautiful artwork you shared on Thanksgiving!!! That made my day!!!! It is beautiful! I printed it on my selphy and it cut the words off so printed it again and have the two layered in my journal!! :) Happy me!!! Oh, and would totally buy those adorable flags if you sell them:) Thank you!!!!
+Tara Eiken Woohoo!!! Thank you so much for sharin' all that with me! Isn't it tempting to just have a 'play day' from work. ;) I am so honored that you printed out the card! Thank you!!! I will let ya know when I have some more stuff in my etsy shop. I did talk with the clear stamp supplier and I think we have worked out something so I can get exclusive designed stamps for y'all! Super excited about that in the future!!! xoxo
Great video thanks for sharing - I love doing tip-in's as well and how it makes my journal so chunky --- also where did you get the dyanaflow (sp?) inks? I think I need to check those our -- I love that they can be layered.......Keep Posting - I love being able to check out all of your ideas - thanks again!!!
+Karen Yanonis I do love a chunky journal! :) I just filmed a video on the inks and daubers. I'll be posting that soon!!! Thanks so much for watchin'!!! xoxo
oh my gosh! why did I not think about mixing color with my paste before I put it on instead of painting it after...lol And apparently I'm living under a rock because I had never heard of tip ins.....thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Gosh I love listening to you. What book are you using that doesn't bleed through the pages? I'm having a heck of a time finding one, and if I find paper that doesn't bleed so I can make a book, I find the paper too thick.
+Carolyn B Hey there! I'm using a blank Midori insert right now (003). But Chic Sparrow inserts are AMAZING too! Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
+Marie Matthews Thank you so so much!!!! The insert in this video is a blank Midori insert. It's one of my top two inserts I use for journaling. I'm still experimenting with some other papers though too. ;) Thanks so much for watchin'!!! xoxo
+Smokey Fireside Creations Haha! Sorry! Thankfully, they aren't that bad on the wallet! Video is all edited, but I need to post one before that one. Y'all will be flooded with videos this week! ;)
+Franny Rogers Waterproof inserts? I'm not quite sure what you mean. I had always gotten the Midori brand inserts up until just recently. Now I'm using a Chic Sparrow insert. :)
I guess I was just curious if they were the water color paper inserts from Midori....I'm such a dork, not water proof?! I just recently watched JH's video on gesso, so now it all makes sense!! :)
+Franny Rogers Oh ok! I feel ya! I don't buy the watercolor inserts. These are just the blank regular Midori paper. 003 I believe. I am REALLY LOVING the Tomoe River paper inserts that I just made. ❤️❤️❤️
I LOOOOOVE Tomoe River paper!! I just heard they are selling the A5 size now! I had ordered the 8.5x11 from nanamipaper. Did you use that size to cut your inserts?
Can you do a video on "journaling?".. I mean I knooowww journaling, but you write a lot,lol.. Which I love to see other people journal, but mine never comes out that way.. Hard to explain.. Maybe I need to look up and try to really understand journaling..
+mssoftbrn I think I could do that. :) It's just a safe place for me to let it all out, ya know? I gab. Alot. So that may be why I have so much writing! haha!!! Thanks so much for watchin'!!! xoxo
+Ali Brown Shameful I know but unemployed right now and getting by the best I know how but hoping for better days. Perhaps someday soon I can order one LOL. Keep up the great work and reviews! Hugz xoxo
Cynthia Not shameful! Just surprised because all your questions made me think you had one. Sorry I assumed!!! Praying for provision in the form of job or generosity to come your way soon!
I've been "Tipping In" for years...but I didn't know it was a thing. I thought it was something awesome that I made up. :/ I'm just gonna go feel sad about not being a genius for a few minutes. ;)
I guess you could but I want to make sure the thing getting tipped-in doesn't pull off the page. It depends if you have good washi or not. I just like doing both sides because it feels permanent. :)

I use Tomoe 68gms. It's heavier and can withstand the weight of paint and tipins better. Thanks for watching and your welcome for answering. ;)

Where do you buy the dynaflow (sp?) inks?
I got them here: www.dharmatrading.com/paints/dye-na-flow-fabric-paint.html Thanks for watching!!! :)
I was doing what is now called “tip-in”, when I was in teens in ‘91.
Can you do a video on "journaling?".. I mean I knooowww journaling, but you write a lot,lol.. Which I love to see other people journal, but mine never comes out that way.. Hard to explain.. Maybe I need to look up and try to really understand journaling..

Cynthia You don't have one?!?

Where is the card with the crowns from?
It's something I made from a 4x6 picture and then I washi taped some black crown acetate over the top. Thanks for watching! xoxo
:)))) love your videos!!!
+Karen Aguilar Thank you so much!!!
I've been "Tipping In" for years...but I didn't know it was a thing. I thought it was something awesome that I made up. :/ I'm just gonna go feel sad about not being a genius for a few minutes. ;)
Why do you have to put washi tape on both sides? Will it be ok to just place it on one of the sides of the tip in?
I guess you could but I want to make sure the thing getting tipped-in doesn't pull off the page. It depends if you have good washi or not. I just like doing both sides because it feels permanent. :)
TIp-in demo @ 15:00!
so fun
Some Book people e.g. librarians tip-in for book repairs.
