He's 18 months old, though, so if he makes a full recovery (physically and psychologically), he'll go nuts in retirement, as he'll want to be out working. Normally in these cases, they will let the dog recover fully physically, then reintroduce him to mock-up scenarios and see how he reacts. If he shows any hesitation, meaning that he doesn't want to do this anymore, then he'll be retired. However, if he doesn't, then they'll allow him to back to active duty. Essentially, they let the dog decide, because forcing him won't work as he wouldn't be effective. If he is retired, then they normally live out life with their handler if they're bonded. Despite Rocky being young, the fact that the handler has refused to leave his side, saying he'll "go home when Rocky goes home", tells me they're bonded! So, regardless of whether he continues to work or not, he's still going to be living with his favourite person 🐾💕

Don't be so quick to leap to a judgement whilst some officer do experience PTSD not allowing him back to work with his partner could be incredibly stress provoking for him, his return to duty will be carefully monitored as it would be for any officer after a traumatic event and if he shows signs of not wanting to go back on duty he will be retired to a loving and caring family.

Houston has been an incredibly violent city at least all of my adult life. I am 68, and was 19 the first time I ever went there. My sister in law, in fast food management, in her early twenties, was robbed at gun point 3 times. The parent company had to post an armed guard in the restaurant. He was present from the moment the 1st employee entered the building, in the morning, until the last person left at night. The politicians are incredibly corrupt. Reminds me of Atlanta. Glad Rocky survived.

I've worked with dog handlers and, usually after situations like this, they make sure that they're both physically and psychologically recovered before sending them back to the field. So, once his wounds have healed, they'll try him on a series of mock scenarios. If he is raring to go, he'll be allowed to work again. But if he shows hesitation (his way of saying "I don't want to do this"), then he'll be retired. So, in the best way they can, they let the dog decide what he wants to do. Either way, he'll get to live out life with the family he loves. The fact that his handler has refused to leave his side shows they're bonded, and handlers are usually given the opportunity to take their dogs in retirement. If he won't leave him in hospital, he's not going to leave him afterwards. So, regardless of his career, Rocky will live out life with his favourite human(s). Hope that allays any concerns 💕🐾

Just like you wouldn't send a human solider who has PTSD back on the battlefield because as maybe sad as it may sound they will be more of a setback than helpful (doesn't make them useless just means they are better suited for something else).
