Unfortunately, right now CarPlay isn't wireless for most aftermarket head units. You'll need the USB-to-Lightning connector for that. You can still connect via Bluetooth to play music or whatever like you would with any other phone, but the actual CarPlay functions are wired only.
No that model does require a USB wired connection for CarPlay. We do have other radios that would do CarPlay wirelessly though. You prolly dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last couple of months xD
I didn't know carplay on this unit was wired!!! For Xmas I installed this in my wife's RAV4 she loves it. Install, including the maestro steering wheel functionality flash went off without a hitch, nearly. I had to use an earlier version of the app. v3.0 not v3.1. I didn't know when I bought the unit that it's wired. I'm a bit upset as it cost $250+install components and went upward of $350! Now I find out it doesn't quite live up to my expectations.
So sorry to hear you aren't totally happy with the unit! did you purchase that with us? Wireless Apple Carplay units are generally a bit more expensive.
Hi I did. I'm not dissatisfied. My wife loves the Sony XAV-AX1000. I didn't realize the amount of bandwidth CarPlay requires. From what I gather the wireless carplay isn't quite ready for prime time having considerable lag. I think I'll save the additional 5bills and keep it. I've been a Crutchfield customer since 1984. She wanted to keep all the existing functions back up camera and Steering wheel control. The Maestro interface was fairly easy to deploy. She loves it!
Just picked up a used one of these to throw into my work ute. Sole reason because it has a volume knob. If I get called on my cb, I need to be able to turn the volume down quickly and not have to push a screen 60000 times.
Your iPhone must be plugged into the USB port on this receiver to get Apple CarPlay to work. Some receivers have WiFi built into them which allow for wireless Apple CarPlay. Sony does not make a model with WiFi but other brands do. Is there a way to add a custom wallpaper? I can’t seem to figure it out at the moment. Also is there any way to mirror screen? Is there some hack to be able to play video like a certain connector in the back? I have a hdmi to iPhone adapter but I don’t see an hdmi on here. Any other options besides that? Thanks in advance!
You can choose between five color wallpapers (Purple, Blue, Green, Red, Black) for the background image, but you will not be able to add a custom wallpaper or image to this receiver. Unfortunately, the Sony XAV-AX1000 does not offer phone mirroring, nor HDMI connections.
Unfortunately it doesn't offer Android Auto capabilities, but its built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling and wireless music streaming will work with Android phones.
I have pulled up the info we have on your 2003 Mercury Marauder, and we do have the steering wheel control adapters available for you to use with this Sony receiver. Please chat with us online or by phone. We will be happy to ensure that you are setup with the proper gear to complete your upgrade.
Hey, Like many people here I need to know something, hope u can help me out with it. Is there a big Difference between the "Sony XAV-AX1005KIT DAB+ Media Receiver" and the "Sony XAV-AX1000 Media Receiver"? And can i use the apple car play with an android phone? I would like to see GoogleMaps and spotify on the touchscreen... hope u understand what i mean... thank you very much and best greetings from germany! :)
We are only familiar with the Sony receivers built for use in the United States. We do not have any experience with the DAB+ model and cannot offer a comparison between them. One difference we do know is that the XAV-AX1000 model we offered does not have the ability to tune in European radio stations. It did not have a DAB tuner. Apple CarPlay only works with iPhones. Android smartphones need Android Auto to interface with radios. This means that the XAV-AX1000 we used to sell is not a good match for the Android smartphones. If the XAV-AX1005KIT DAB+ receiver only supports Apple CarPlay, it also will not work. You will want to find a car receiver with Android Auto.
Looks like you're in luck! The Sony XAV-AX1000 receiver will fit your 2012 Corolla! We will be happy to get you setup with the receiver, and all of the products you will need to complete your install! www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc164/contact

Hi Michael! If you purchased your Sony receiver from Crutchfield, please have your order number handy, and reach out to our technical support team. You will find their contact information by logging into your online Crutchfield account, and accessing the My Orders tab.
Is there a rear aux port that you could hook up an auxiliary disc changer to? The reason why I ask this is because I want a modern head unit with apple car play, sat nav, rear back up camera, but I also have a huge cd collection and love the nostalgia and sound quality from CD's. I have an auxiliary Sony xplod 6 disc changer in the trunk of my car and would hope to keep this feature.
Receivers do not have CD changer ports anymore so the only type of CD changer that can work are the ones typically referred to as FM modulated CD changers. These typically have a remote to control them and a display to show which disc/track is being played. If you have those parts for your CD changer, then it should work through the FM antenna port on this receiver. If you are not sure, which model Sony changer do you have?
in order for this radio to work in your car you will these: the radio itself (the sony xav-ax1000), the dash kit, the radio replacement module, and an antenna adapter. if you have all those, then those will work in your car, especially if you have steering wheel controls. you can find those items you need online.
Android user checking in. Would this be good for me or should I keep looking? The knob is really a selling point but I still want to use Waze and spotify
This receiver does not interface Android smartphones for navigation. It does not support Android Auto. Radios that do support Android Auto so you can get Waze, Spotify, and more working typically do not have a knob because of the screen size requirement. However, floating screen radios (screen is held in front of the dash instead of flush with the dash) can have a knob. We must check your vehicle to confirm this is an option for it. What is the year, make, and model of yours?
Hi Jacob! Here are the options on adjusting the brightness level of the Sony XAV-AX1000. Dimmer: Dims the display: [OFF], [Auto], [ON]. ([Auto] is available only when the illumination control lead is connected and works when the head light is turned on.) [the wrench icon ] adjusts the brightness level when the dimmer is activated: -5 to +5. Touch Panel Adjust: Adjusts the touch panel calibration if the touching position does not correspond with the proper item. If you have trouble accessing these settings, and you purchased your gear from us, our tech support team will be happy to go over these with you. Their contact number will be in your order/shipping confirmation email from us.
The microphone that plugs into this receiver will be used for phone calls as well as receiving Siri commands. If the vehicle has a factory installed microphone, it will not work an aftermarket receiver's CarPlay or Bluetooth.

Hi Peter, the Sony XAV-AX1000 does only offer the option for one USB input. Would you want to go with a new unit that features a rear USB port instead?
Apple CarPlay requires a Bluetooth connection and a highspeed data connection. With most receivers, that means plugging the phone into the USB port on the receiver. Some receivers offer wireless Apple CarPlay. Those receivers have Wi-Fi in them to use as the highspeed data connection instead of the USB port.

It can work with Apple iPhones, starting with the iPhone 5, to run the Apple CarPlay interface which is the interface built into this radio that is designed to run Google Maps from an iPhone. The iPhone needs to be able to get data but does not require a mobile hotspot. It can work when on the cell phone network as long as it is able to receive data through that cell phone network

My 2014 Accent has an OEM USB plug and Aux input separate from the stereo face - can I still wire those up to this in the back or are you forced to use the built-in USB/Aux on the front face?
Those factory inputs cannot be made to work with this receiver. Hi Drew! The Sony XAV-AX1000 is a great receiver, but it's not the most Android friendly option. For Bluetooth calls and audio streaming, as long as your phone has the HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.1 (Phone Book Access Profile) for calls, and has A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) for audio, you will be good to go for Bluetooth serivces. However, the USB device does not support Android devices, and will not display any navigation on the head unit if you are using an Android device. The Sony XAV-AX5000 will get you where you need to be in order to be able to use your Android phone with ease, as well as display your GPS navigation via Android Auto. You can listen to music while your navigation services are in use, as well. Feel free to get in touch if we can help! www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc164/contact

You can use Bluetooth streaming as your audio source while displaying the maps on your receiver's screen. Audio directions from your Carplay supported navigation app will play and temporarily pause your music so you do not miss any important turns!
There have been a few that could have their screen manually turned off. This means if you were driving and done choosing the music to play, you could turn off the screen (the interface) to lessen the light coming from the dash.
The Sony XAV-AX1000's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPhone or other smartphone device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPhone or smartphone device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

do you know if you can hook it up to your steering wheel?
What type of vehicle do you have?
yes it does just installed it
I didn't know carplay on this unit was wired!!!
Awesome! If you need anything else in the future, you know where to find us!!!
Mirror link options available?
Would you get this or a kennwood??
Just picked up a used one of these to throw into my work ute. Sole reason because it has a volume knob. If I get called on my cb, I need to be able to turn the volume down quickly and not have to push a screen 60000 times.
just got this!
Does Apple CarPlay cost anything? I'd be using it only for iTunes on my Iphone SE (3rd Generation).
There is no service plan cost to use Apple CarPlay!
Does the iPhone have to be plugged in to use Carplay or can you also connect it wireless?
The Carplay is NOT wireless with this unit. It will require a USB connection.
Hi There! Do you know how much it measures in centimeters?
Does it have a microphone built in for phone calls? Thanks
It has an external microphone that plugs into the back via a 12' cable.
can you use carplay without plugging it in with bluetooth or does carplay solely work only if a phone is plugged in?
wondering the same thing
Your iPhone must be plugged into the USB port on this receiver to get Apple CarPlay to work. Some receivers have WiFi built into them which allow for wireless Apple CarPlay. Sony does not make a model with WiFi but other brands do. You can find those models using this link:

You can choose between five color wallpapers (Purple, Blue, Green, Red, Black) for the background image, but you will not be able to add a custom wallpaper or image to this receiver.

Hey,
Like many people here I need to know something, hope u can help me out with it.

It was great for a year. Now the touch screen is broken on it :/

Hi, is it possible to confirm if this unit is compatible with the factory display and steering wheel controls of the Peugeot 207 (2011)?
in order for this radio to work in your car you will these: the radio itself (the sony xav-ax1000), the dash kit, the radio replacement module, and an antenna adapter. if you have all those, then those will work in your car, especially if you have steering wheel controls. you can find those items you need online.
How do you brighten the screen. Mine gets a bad glare where i cant see anything sometimes
Hi Jacob!
Here are the options on adjusting the brightness level of the Sony XAV-AX1000.
Dimmer:
Dims the display: [OFF], [Auto], [ON].
([Auto] is available only when the illumination
control lead is connected and works when the
head light is turned on.)
[the wrench icon ] adjusts the brightness level when the
dimmer is activated: -5 to +5.
Touch Panel Adjust:
Adjusts the touch panel calibration if the
touching position does not correspond with the proper item.
If you have trouble accessing these settings, and you purchased your gear from us, our tech support team will be happy to go over these with you. Their contact number will be in your order/shipping confirmation email from us.
Does the car mic work for phone calls while using plugged in for CarPlay and while using it wireless for Bluetooth?
The microphone that plugs into this receiver will be used for phone calls as well as receiving Siri commands. If the vehicle has a factory installed microphone, it will not work an aftermarket receiver's CarPlay or Bluetooth.

How can I get it to play the music videos thru usb
is there an option to add additional USB input from the back of the unit? want to use CarPlay, but don't want an ugly cable coming down my dash
Hi Peter, the Sony XAV-AX1000 does only offer the option for one USB input. Would you want to go with a new unit that features a rear USB port instead?
I’m confused. If it has Bluetooth, why can’t we use Bluetooth for Apple CarPlay instead of plugging the iPhone directly into the radio?
Apple CarPlay requires a Bluetooth connection and a highspeed data connection. With most receivers, that means plugging the phone into the USB port on the receiver. Some receivers offer wireless Apple CarPlay. Those receivers have Wi-Fi in them to use as the highspeed data connection instead of the USB port.
Does The Apple Car Play Feature Still Work via Bluetooth ? Or does it HAVE to be Connected w the USB?..

Will this radio still run the Google maps off your cellphone irrelevant of OS? Mobile hotspot?
This radio does not work with all cellphones.
My receiver works but no audio comes out ? When I use the maps the audio works but not the radio or when I play music. How can I resolve this problem?

Using a splitter on the subwoofer preamp output should not reduce the signal being delivered to the amp; just divide it over two connections now instead of one
My 2014 Accent has an OEM USB plug and Aux input separate from the stereo face - can I still wire those up to this in the back or are you forced to use the built-in USB/Aux on the front face?
Those factory inputs cannot be made to work with this receiver. We have advisors that can be reached using the link below who can discuss all your preferences to help give a personal recommendation on a receiver that will work and the parts needed to install it:

I had a few questions about this. Does the bluetooth work with Android phones, and would I be able to use my google play music through bluetooth? And can I use the navigation with an android phone? And lastly, can I listen to music at the same time the Nav is going? Thanks
You can listen to music while your navigation services are in use, as well.

does your phone need to be plugged in for carplay to work?
With this model, yes Carplay is though the USB connection
Is it possible to use Bluetooth and apple car play for maps at the same time
You can use Bluetooth streaming as your audio source while displaying the maps on your receiver's screen. Audio directions from your Carplay supported navigation app will play and temporarily pause your music so you do not miss any important turns!
Any option for automatic screen off while driving ?????
There have been a few that could have their screen manually turned off. This means if you were driving and done choosing the music to play, you could turn off the screen (the interface) to lessen the light coming from the dash.
does iPhone charge while on the USB port?
The Sony XAV-AX1000's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPhone or other smartphone device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPhone or smartphone device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
