Oklahoma RETHINKING Leaving Expansion Big 12: Move to SEC is Early College Football Playoff Regret

  • Oklahoma's decision to leave the Big 12 Conference for the Southeastern Conference (SEC) was influenced by several factors:
Conference Stability: Oklahoma sought greater stability and long-term viability for its athletic programs. The Big 12 had experienced previous instability with schools departing for other conferences, raising concerns about the conference's future. Joining the SEC provided Oklahoma with a more secure and established conference environment.
Financial Considerations: The SEC offers lucrative financial opportunities, including lucrative television contracts, revenue-sharing models, and larger payouts from conference championships and bowl games. Oklahoma likely saw the move to the SEC as a means to increase its revenue and financial resources, which are essential for supporting its athletic programs and facilities.
Competitive Environment: The SEC is widely regarded as one of the most competitive conferences in college athletics, particularly in football. Joining the SEC would provide Oklahoma with the opportunity to compete against top-tier programs and enhance its national profile. The SEC's strong competition and prestigious reputation were likely appealing factors for Oklahoma's athletic program.
Geographic Expansion: Oklahoma's move to the SEC represented a geographic expansion for the conference, with the addition of a prominent program from the Big 12. This expansion allowed the SEC to further solidify its presence in the central United States and strengthen its overall footprint in college athletics.
Strategic Alignment: Oklahoma's values, priorities, and strategic goals may have aligned more closely with those of the SEC than with the Big 12. The move to the SEC may have provided Oklahoma with opportunities for collaboration, resource-sharing, and alignment with other member institutions.
Overall, Oklahoma's decision to leave the Big 12 for the SEC was driven by a combination of factors, including conference stability, financial considerations, competitive environment, geographic expansion, and strategic alignment. The move represented a significant shift in the college sports landscape and reflected Oklahoma's desire to position itself for success in the ever-evolving world of collegiate athletics.

Nebraska never recruited like OU both the few years before or after their conference move. Nebraska was doing okay before they fired a coach who was consistently getting Nebraska in the B10 title picture.
Do you also speak negatively of the UCFs or Cincinnati’s of the world for leaving their conferences, or just OU? If so, you might need to check your bias. I’m amazed at how many people wish so badly that OU would fall to their demise.

What they ALL should do with all this money being passed around is provide more academic scholarships for the overall student body rather than lining the pockets of coaches and athletic department administrators. Why wasn’t this excessive conference hopping going on in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s? Sure there was occasionally some of it, but not that much. If RULES on NIL are not put in place to ensure COMPETITIVE BALANCE, only the schools with the wealthiest alumni will be able to legitimately compete.

The option is to stay in a conference with a cupcake schedule that plagued OU for years that will roughly stay pass-heavy to get blown out when facing teams like Georgia or Alabama. Or go to the SEC, learn to adapt to their game style with a demanding schedule, and earn their way to an SEC to a national championship. If OU or Texas does well in the SEC, what is the chance they will probably blow out a Big 12 team who won the conference because they outscored the other team? -Probably high. These folks need to understand the level of competition between the Big 12 and the SEC is immense. So they would rather have OU spinning the wheels of futility, taking the Big 12 championship only to lose to an SEC program in the playoffs year after year. The last time a Big 12 team went super far in the playoffs, they got the s--t beaten out of them in a blowout in the national championship with the most significant points differential in CFP history.

Ok, this might be hard to grasp. Yes, OU would make more CFP's if they remained in the Big12. But OU will have a better chance of winning the CFP by moving to the SEC. OU has been hampered in recruiting for years by being in the Big12, especially on the defensive side of the ball. OU will have a tougher time in the SEC but as a championship level program that is what they want. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. If OU remained in the Big12 they would get in the CFP almost every year, maybe win a 1st round game and then get beat in the 2nd by a team from the Big10 or SEC that was able to recruit better players because of the conference they were in. So as an OU fan, I would rather the team take their lumps but be stronger for it in the long run than having that false sense of hope from dominating a bunch of lesser schools year in and year out. I have seen that play out far too many times.

Between the recruiting bump OU has already experienced for a couple years followed by playing the SEC schedule, as fans we no longer have to worry about strolling into the playoffs just to get bullied around. We will certainly make fewer playoffs, but that’s not the goal anyways. Our odds of winning the playoffs is still higher, despite the lower odds of making it. I think most other fans have a hard time grasping this.

I could not agree more; Oklahoma can adapt, learn, recruit, and potentially become a powerhouse in the SEC. Jesus, such a bad take. OU fans are excited about the SEC and not a single one of us is telling Brent Venables “show me “
Also, that House in Massachusetts analogy wasn’t very good. It only works if while we “lived in Texas” and were getting paid Texas salary we were still trying to find a house in mass. Now we are living in Mass and getting paid a Mass salary while trying to get that same house; our recruiting is consistently the best it’s been in over a decade because we are heading to the SEC, and we are about to get about a 20mil bump in media earnings and likely a larger bump in revenue from increased fan interest in all these new exciting games week in and week out.
Also, the BIG 10 and BIG 12 were not the same before the realignment and would not be the same after realignment even if OU and Texas stayed. You could make that argument if you viewed the conferences over the last two years, but traditionally Big10 teams like Wisconsin and Penn St are better than teams like OSU and Kstate. And sorry, but adding in Utah, UCF, and BYU, which have the potential to be good football schools, it NOT the same as adding USC, Oregon, Washington. You are comparing a future Big 12 that never would have happened if OU hadn’t left. OU saw this future. OU tried to get the conference to expand, but the Big 12 was so complacent it wouldn’t. The Big 12 wouldn’t compete with the SEC & Big 10. OU wanted to. Misaligned priorities.

A Big 12 championship was fool’s gold. Look how outmatched OU was when they got to the CFP. Moving to the SEC is definitely worth the try. Even if it doesn’t work out, the Big 12 would welcome OU back. But I doubt it will come to that as OU will be just fine in the SEC.

And comparing the middle of the road Big 12 to the Big 10 is laughable. IMO, the move to the SEC versus staying in the Big 12 is about improving the quality of games and recruits. The Big 12 had no interest in expansion when it needed to. It wasn’t until OU/UT had enough of the bs and decided to leave, that they expanded out of necessity and not being dissolved as a conference. The management and leadership of Big 12 has been a shit show for the last 10-12 years. With the world of NIL, everyone will be spending more money on recruits and facilities. Being in the SEC gives both OU and UT the opportunity to land those recruits and compete at a higher level, against higher level opponents. Big 12 doesn’t. It’s not an attractive conference anymore.

They never want to discuss the elephant in the room. Recruiting wise in order for either school to have an opportunity not only to get into the playoffs but to win the national championship, they had to leave the BIG 12.
The players needed to compete nationally year in and year out don't wanna play in the BIG 12, and they know this.
The BIG 12 wants to continue to LEECH off of Texas and OU's brand for legitimization, which in turn will allow then access to the leftover players that neither programs wanted or had the space for. At the end of the day, their goal is just conference titles and maybe playoffs. National titles are just not realistic for the remaining schools in football.
