I watch the six films (extended editions) on a regular basis, never get tired of watching them all, will always remain my favourite films ever, Sir Peter Jackson and all the cast of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are absolutely and totally fantastic.

If you watch the beginning again you'll see that Richard looks over at someone touches his ear a couple of time and shakes his head. To me it indicates that they have ear pieces in so they can hear what these guests are saying and his isn't working. I've watched it several times to make sure this is what is happening so I don't think he is being inattentive or doesn't want to be there, nor has it anything to do with playing pranks. He just can't hear! :) That's just my opinion of course.
