Relaxing Vintage Engine Sound Canal Boat Sleep ASMR

- In the 5 years or so that I've been producing Travels by Narrowboat, one question has popped up more often from viewers than anything else - when am I going to produce a 'relaxation' type of video - one consisting of nothing more than 'Aslan' chugging along a canal in the UK, her 1952 Petter McLaren B2 vintage diesel engine, tirelessly playing it's sweet music. Apparently it helps people nod-off, though I'm told it's actually meant as a complement. ASMR they call it.
Well request no more, as here it is.
Two hours (almost) of Aslan doing what she does best, along with some of the various sounds typically heard on and around our British Inland waterways.
Filmed recently along a 7 mile stretch of the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, it even includes one of the locks near the end.

I love it Sir, but could I ask...I watch on a 70in 4k screen and the slight vibration of the camera is very noticeable when enlarged. Do you have a mounting device with better isolation from vibration? Thanks Again and glad to see you moving about.
Yes Brian. If I was to do it again, I'd record with a different camera. You live and learn but this is a one off. Besides, it's a relaxation video - close eyes and drift away, sleep and relaxation aid - that sort of thing. It's the latest craze on RUclips apparently. 😁

Shit. I’m American. I’m not going to even lie to you. Some of y’all might think this is boring af. But my ass got stoned as a mother fucker, ordered some baskin robins ice cream off doordash, casted this video to my tv. Then I wrapped up in a warm fuzzy blanket and decided I’d go on this journey with this man from the comfort of my own sofa with an ice cream as my only source of substance. I love these types of videos, it’s like reading a book in reverse . Instead of creating the vision in your head from the words you have to create words for the visions your seeing. And this is a peaceful storybook. I love it!

This is relaxing and the countryside is beautiful. But I will say that this video just proves that Kevin is what makes his channel so enjoyable for me. Without his commentary and shots of himself and others, narrow-boating does not look near as much fun. Kevin’s outlook on life, his rock references, and his sense of humor *while he is narrow-boating* are why I enjoy his channel.
Aslan has by far the best sounding engine on the whole of RUclips. I especially love the subtle change in tone when going under bridges. Mark my words, this is going to be the breakout hit sound of 2022!

My Grandfather used to take me on steam train excursions with him when I was young. There was a local railroad museum that had rolling stock including a 2-8-2 Mikado steam engine. We would ride in an open car just behind the engine tender and use my Grandfather’s cassette recorder to record the sounds of the engine, the whistle, and the track. At home, we would then just quietly sit and listen to the sounds of the experience. Good times. He’s been gone for nearly 50 years and I still miss him.
I have lost my fiancée and my job then lost on of my dogs. I am suffering from extreme anxiety. For the first time in a while I have got some sleep listening to aslan. Thanks for this lovely vlog. Your my hero.

Hello Kevin. I have yet to see this video from start to finish as I keep falling asleep, which is no mean feat for someone who has spent their life struggling to sleep! Two years ago today, 2nd May 2021, I lost my husband Steve to a brain tumour, only 14 months after my sister Elaine succumbed to Covid. Watching your videos relaxes me and gives me peace. This is the best vlog on RUclips! I watched before going to sleep for a week. It took a week because I would fall asleep after 15 minutes of Aslan’s relaxing putt putt and the amazing scenes of the beautiful canal! Honestly, it’s the best source of relaxation I’ve ever experienced! I’ll be coming back to this episode again and again. Listening to the "voice" of Aslan, and watching that beautiful countryside passing by is mesmerizing. What a glorious day you chose to film this chapter in your life aboard. I particularly love the reflection of clouds and passing landscape - and bridges - in the smooth water of the canal! I admit that I miss your narrative however, but that's just me. Nice job!

Yes! I used to run “Cruising the Cut” bow camera for background noise awhile back when he was doing them, the best part being the natural sounds. Extra cool with Aslan’s particular cadence 👍😊

In the 60s and 70s I lived on HWY 85 in Buffalo S.D. and in the winter trucks would park in front of our house and idle all night long. When we moved I could not sleep, I needed the sweet sound of a diesel engine to sooth me to sleep. Thank you.

Last August I fractured my back. I couldn't sleep in my bed with my hubby for the first couple of weeks. I set my laptop up in front of the futon on my porch room. I found your videos. I played them all night, falling asleep for short periods. I did find it very relaxing. It got me through a hard time. Thank you for that. I'm voting for a one-off, once a week. Next, a Zoom F6 and pair of Sennheiser MKH 8020 omnis with a Jecklin disc for capturing the audio at a level only CHG could produce. I've watched this twice already - it's wonderful for watching while riding a stationary exercise bike, too.

To me the most satisfying feature of all your bow shots is that beautiful lamp peering out into the distance. Just such a unique look for a canal boat!

To be able to live on the canals like this is an absolute luxurious lifestyle! You are more connected to the world around you and less on tv and social media. Just being on the canal and watching life around you…..bliss!!
Very true. Can't remember the last time I watched TV and only enter social media for the videos I produce. Very liberating and frees up so much time to live in the moment and place you're in.

This is just the best. I used to have another video when needed to relax before sleep. This one is so much better. Lovely views a bit of nature sounds and the wonderful cadence of Aslan’s engine.
This is very relaxing and enjoyable. I remember watched a TV programme about a bus journey in the Yorkshire Dales and it was similar to this. The bus went through different villages in the area and showed the scenery from different cameras fitted to the bus. Thanks Kevin!
The husband thought for sure Aslan's chugging would put me to sleep. It didn't. Loved this. Felt like I was cruising with you, minus the odors and rocking.
I couldn't sleep the other night so I stretched out in the recliner and turned this on and in 15 minutes I was dozing off. Love love love the sound of the engine. They need to put this in one of those white box or whatever it's called to sleep by. The boxes have rain, ocean, forest, but this would be ideal.

I do like listening to Aslan chugging along. I haven’t got to the end of the trip yet because I keep falling asleep. I want to find a way of keeping it handy for those ‘still awake at 3pm nights’. Aslan won’t hold with that I am sure. A has the best voice in the UK Canal world IMHO! Great idea.
