However, the studio was doomed to fail from the very start, and in this video, I explain why. I go over how MAPPA treats their animators and the horrible working conditions at the studio.

This is why we have to applaud to the goat of animation studios Kyoto animation, they literally had lectures if you would like to learn, fair schedule, fair payment everything was so well

All those human animators who can feel emotion who work in those Japanese cartoon studios who are subjected to shitty working conditions and are overworked to death should be replaced with emotionless, mechanical robots, and if these Japanese cartoon studios don't replace their emotional human employees with emotionless robots, I will sue the fuck out of them.
As an animator myself who’ve even used professional programs that Disney uses, let me tell u it’s extremely hard there’s so much more to animating then just lineart, colors, and some effects. Program cashes, nodes, layers, hidden layers, hidden color layers, file crashes, backgrounds separation, intractable objects, causes and affects to environments, constant quality, timing, etc.. oh and hit random buttons “oh no wtf happened?? Why can’t I undo? Do I have a backup file? Why is the most recent yesterdays work? Why didn’t my auto save automatically saves??? Is it broken??”

"yo let's make our animators work in a public bathroom and install a computer there"

90% of their animators and staff have left since the release of JJK Season 2. Expect everything it’s gonna do to be awful at this point. They already lost OPM Season 3.

@@carloscauan7967 you mean the same leakers that predicted Chainsaw Man, Vinland Saga, Hell's Paradise and AOT? MAPPA is finished, they will never make a good show again. Their past two shows have been mid as fuck and Chainsaw Man Reze Arc Movie is gonna be in development hell till it gets picked up by Andraft. A studio that the former director of Chainsaw Man's first season Ryu Nakayama is in the works of making where all the staff for CSM will probably go, Vinland Saga will stay, AOT is done, Hell's Paradise will likely get picked up by another studio or continue to decline in quality. MAPPA is in the corporate stages where its gonna start mass hiring unproven or lack luster talent to meet demand.

No, MAPPA 100% lost this show due to the backlash from JJK Season 2. Why didn't it get announced to be by J.C. Staff earlier? Why AFTER JJK Season 2 controversy? It doesn't take 6-8 months to animate a announcement trailer with no release date attached. MAPPA is dead bro, they are gonna either slowly lose all their shows or they will decline in quality to the point no one will watch them.
While season 2 of JJK was a masterpiece through and through in my opinion the fact that this amazing series is coming at the mental and physical well being of others is really disheartening especially since all of this could be avoided with just giving the staff more time and breathing room. @@Bunaye Also the vinland saga season 2 was created by the same team who worked on the first season at wit studio and had a healthier time schedule than the other mappa anime projects around 3 plus years

some insight, well its not that easy as just giving more time. The company is time bonded with contracts, and they got to met those schedules. Who's the decision of accepting those, well corporatives as always.
I hope this blows up and everybody can see what this truly costs. It's horrible that the people who create these masterpieces experience some of the worst working conditions in the industry. Underpaying workers when they're the most profitable studio is disgusting. Thanks for making this.

I was honestly very dissapointed in the quality of mappa's animation for Attack on titan, it was such a downgrade from what Wit gave us in the first seasons. I would gladly wait longer for episodes crafted with more time and attention but I know the market destroys this.
Edit: if in some way it would be possible, I'd love for wit to finish the anime and release bluerays. I would gladly pay for that
Yes, exactly! WIT also used CGI for titans sometimes (season 2 colossal), but holy hell Mappa overdid their usage of CGI. Also, the bar codes on character eyes are so weird to me.
I sort of agree. While I personally prefer the new character designs some of the cgi titans really stands out (mainly the attack and jaw, the rest I think look fine (I even prefer the new female))
Despite preferring the WiT studio, I wouldn't say the downgrade was substantial, but it was there. However, overall, they did a tremendous job animating AoT.
the wit artlike for attack on titan is so good, season 4 looks like a completely different anime
i think using the word "quality" isnt the right choice the quality is phenominal compared to most animes i mean its mappa, your gripe seems more so personal preference than the quality actually changing. To say an anime was downraded is when there are visible mistakes and weird looking figures, mappa just chose a diferent style than wit mappa uses alot of softer lones white wit had more angular darker lines. That might also give a sense of quaity downgrade. Its pretty much that you were comfortable with wit and mappa upset your confortability. So i dont think wit wouldve done bette rpersay but i think they couldve done just as good but in their own way. Like vinland saga s1(wit) has very different feel than s2(mappa) but both are still regarded as amazing.
Error at 4:16 Mappa did created Jjk and Aot season 4 at around the same time but they were two main sakuga animation pipelines. The team that works with Yuichiro hayashi and the team that used to work with Sung hip park now with keisuke seshimo. The Yuichiro hayashi team was given ten months with Aot while since jjk was earlier planned, it was got a better schedule with Sung hoo park. The teams were still overworked don’t get me wrong. 4 months for jjk 0 is crazy

The same thing happened with Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse where the studio was overworking the animators.
But not to this extent. Over here, it they were being overworked, in Japan animators were being tortured, suicide was literally just implied in this video.
Not comparable. Across the spider verse had a four year deadline while mappa made the jjk 0 movie a 4 month deadline. Also, Mappa’s animators barely get enough money to scrape by for the work they put in.

The solution is that MAPPA shouldn't take up so many projects that it can't handle, because these projects are bounded by contracts from stakeholders like streaming services, toy companies, etc. The main cause of the problem comes from these stakeholders because they garner way too much profit from these shows, leaving just a tiny bit for the studios making them. However, minute solutions can be done by the studio leadership as well to ensure a good working environment for their team. It starts by not taking up so many projects at the same time.

I'm a fluent Japanese speaker and I have a personal friend who used to work at Mad House. The predecesor to Mappa. Usually these anime studios drain their workers until they all quit and a new studio is formed. Rinse and repeat. We saw this with Gainax and Trigger
I genuinely feel so bad for the staff in those companies, I mean, why would they feel as if their art is trash? Because when I look at those sort of anime like JJK It looks so good, but now I see why. Hopefully we can send our love and support to these staff members!❤
In Brazil 90% of the population receive almost 2 USD per hour or less of income, when you said that 14 USD per hour was very low I laughed AF.

Even though I hate Manabu for overworking his employees, he’s breaking the societal norm. Many times, studios have to disregard employees well being because they simply don’t get enough money. This is incredibly prevalent in smaller studios where they have to constantly pick up anime and release it in a small amount of time because they can’t afford it or the production committee said so. This is because the production committee are the people who take the profit and fund the production. Theirs a few outliers such as CSM but at the end of the day, this isn’t a MAPPA problem but an industry problem

I thought of becoming an animator in Japan when I'm going to graduate university. After seeing this video, my dream has been shattered. I wanted to do animation because i thought it will be fun. This isn't fun at all. I rather work on an indie game or pursue another dream which is related to art or creation, like product design or fashion design. Or a storyteller.
This is just awful. I wish for all of the people that worked in mappa to have a good life 😭😭

One of the best director to ever exist, whose work remained a favorite of every generation in my country, despite the movies being black and white, P. Ramlee, once said that if you want to make quality work that lasted, you need to make sure that those you work with are taken care of. He's very famous for his comedy works and he was extremely well respected. You just can't stop laughing at the jokes as they are very well written no matter how many times you watch it. What I'm saying is, quality works take time. When you rush it, it just won't hold. People will forget about it. He would even wait for his actors and actresses to get comfortable with their roles before shooting. He said; we all rise together or we will all fall. And he was right. They all rose in the industry together, not just him or the main actors/actresses with him. So take care of those below you. You are nothing without them.

keep in mind most workers, and for anime in fact, including mappa and other studios, mostly consists of freelancers anyway.
I’m not sure if it’s right to bunch up Mad House with Mappa at the end there, the extent of the overwork seems to be very different
It’s not like the creator of Mappa and mad house left it into the wrong hands but as he was still working there he had less and less control over the projects they picked up and the creative vision so the studios were already going down that path before he left.
Both studios are victims of their own success though Mad House did a massive rebound with Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon making smart production decisions like early on deciding which episodes to out source
All we can hope is Mappa learned form this since several animators and directors are refusing to work with them now. They canceled the Yuri on Ice movie let’s hope they can also build an actual production line for Season 2 of hells paradise because for season 1 it was non existent

The company was pretty decent in 2016. Then the company changed management, and everything went downhill.
But the question still stands, a lot of anime studios had this same issue as Mappa. Why do people care about the toxic overworking culture now?
Because it's happening to popular shows. If there was any other instance of this happening, but for a series nobody knew, it wouldn't get traction.

I honestly didn’t buy the blue ray versions because the changes they made are just a 2$ upgrade. Hidden inventory the movie and the first season made me love anime even more but the fight with jogo and mahoraga made think if they put their best efforts into this with reasonable profit and time It would have been a gift to my eyes but the poor working conditions just make me think the higher ups are just lazy. They are a multi billion dollar company and they make deadlines shorter and underpay their workers if America or idk England had an animation company I’m 100% sure they would put as much profit as they could into their work. Mappa gives these workers a 70gb ram and 14gb space rtx 100 computer which isn’t really good to animate one of the best masterpieces of all time in a cubical and sometimes they put the workers in a random spot outside the studio. The mappa and mad house companies need a new dircetor like the invincible director cuz he alright he’s a good director, the people that work at toei animators only got overworked recently only because they have higher quality stuff and need their best work. In conclusion mappa and mad house need better director’s and pay for the equipment and the animators so the anime and the people making it can be at their best.

The animation director stated that only 30% of the vision was accomplished. it doesn’t mean 30% completion, as i stated in the video. This is coming directly from the staff so i really don’t know what you mean by “misinformation” or “debunked” as the 30% is not even meant to be taken literally lol.

i mean, i could tell that MAPPA animators got tired during the shibuya incident, because during Sukuna VS Mahoraga, mahoraga's looks got a bit sloppy during a few scenes (E.g when mahoraga was walking through malevolant shrine)

'got a bit sloppy' you mean Mahoraga was animated like I made it, and I'm mediocre talented with zero experience in this area. This is unfortunate, but in many scenes characters were overly disfigured, animators were in such rush that they just had to animate some abysmal-quality scenes to just sent anything and meet time deadline. Poor animators, I really appreciate their efforts, without it season 2 would be just unwatchable.
