The Man Who Drove Japan Insane - The Terror of Rabaul

- On January 14, 1944, the United States Marine Corps Aviation's Fighting Squadron 215, known as the Fighting Corsairs, was in the heat of a critical mission covering a flight of bombers targeting enemy shipping.
As Fighting Corsairs approached Simpson Harbor, Rabaul, a major Japanese stronghold, they were intercepted by a superior number of Japanese fighter aircraft. The skies erupted into a whirlwind of combat, with shells shooting out, explosions lighting up the already bright sky, radio chatter filled with urgent commands, and smoke trails from damaged aircraft.
Amidst the chaos, a single pilot found himself cut off from his squadron. But this was no ordinary man; this was First Lieutenant Robert Hanson.
Alone and facing overwhelming odds, Hanson didn't waver. Instead, he single-handedly engaged the enemy, destroying five aircraft despite being low on ammunition and fuel.
This incredible feat earned him the nickname "The Terror of Rabaul."
In the following two weeks, Hanson, one of the greatest pilots in the Pacific Theater, would go on to down 15 more.

I served aboard the USS Hanson DD832, she was commissioned in 1945 and named for this courageous marine fighter pilot. She was home ported out of San Diego and served in pacific during WWII, Korean War and Viet Nam. I was onboard for two deployments from 1970-72.

Thank you for your service and self-sacrifice. It's people like you who allow people like us the ability to live peaceful lives. You were fortunate to have served on his namesake ship. Capt. Hanson was a True American War Hero. Sadly, he never made it home. The Greatest Generation is aptly named.
Respect from a USCG vet,we saved lives stateside.Thank you for your service.
Rest in peace... You I served your country with courage and honor and your sacrifice is truly appreciated!! Semper Fi!! A disabled US Army Veteran
Thank you for for your service!
@@gabehartman6832 Sir"
In pow camp he ate food while working in kitchen and not sharing food. He only got 26 kills not 28. Last 2 not confirmed.
Plus he was a drunk who was hated by his own kids. I met boyington in late 70's. I was 10 and got his book. I asked for a autograph. He wanted 10 bucks. This was at falcon field mesa,az. Foss was nicer.
RIP, Cpt. Hansen. May you forever fly the blue skies above.
"Thank You" for my FREEDOM and Rest in Peace, Sir...
This guy was one bad boy one heck of a pilot
Remember, there are Bold Pilots and Old Pilots, but there are no Old Bold Pilots:
As sooner or later their luck runs out, and this applies doubly for military pilots during a war. All these bold military pilots know their blase of glory will ultimately end with their death, but that they will kill enough enemy pilots that numerous fellow pilots & other soldiers will have to die...
Or you could say they simply did the numbers, their life for many of the enemy means that more of their Comrades come home, the fewer Civilians die and the sooner the War ends...
The Soviets like to preserve their heroes during The Great Patriotic War so they tried to identify and reassign this type of Bold Soldier as a Trainer. Sometimes they were even successful....
@@davidhollenshead4892 Yep. U only cheat Death so many times.
Hanson would be proud of this video about him.
The only reason the Marines got the Corsair was because the USN felt the Corsair was not suited for carrier use. The Corsair was also sent to the Royal Navy as part of lend lease. The Brits figured out how to land the F4U & only then was there an renewed interest by the USN.
The Corsair cost more than the Hellcats. The F6F was an easier air frame to fly for the still learning Naval pilots. Post WW2 the Hellcats were used less. By the Korean War F4U served as the fighter/bomber used in that conflict.
Yes the fact that The Americans couldn't land the Corsairs on carriers and that the technique was discovered by the British seems to be a fact that is "overlooked" in American tales of this aircraft. Make of that what you will.
Exactly. The Americans had determined that the near total lack of forward visibility at the critical stage of approach to the carrier deck was insurmountable. The British discovered that if the deck was approached from the side, banking the plane toward the deck as they approached, they had sufficient visibility from the side long enough to set up the landing properly before leveling the wing just before touchdown.
Another fun fact about the Corsair, the engine was so powerful, it is the only prop aircraft that could go full vertical and "hover" just like a helicopter due to the power of the engine.
@csdn4483 To late the hero, was the F8F- Bearcat.A fighter that could fly circles around the mustang. This fightercl could climb 30 % faster,20 lighter, and could roll 50% faster than a hellcat.I would have liked to see it tangle with zekes, but it never got a chance. However, the south Vietnamese got to fly it in combat.
@@markpaul-ym5wg I have read about Bearcats were popular in Air Racing
The thumbnail was of a CH53 rear gunner.
What an absolute diamond of a man! As we're all who served and kept us safe and free. " all that evil needs to triumph, is for a few good men to do nothing" ❤
God bless 🕊️
free? for woke usa?
I see so much negativity on news outlets and throughout social media. I'm glad to see some positivity in these comments. Whether it's brothers and sisters in arms sending a message or someone showing appreciation for Captain Hanson's bravery, tenacity, spirit, etc. It helps keep the faith in there being good individuals out there. Especially those who are appreciative of such acts of selflessness during these times. Semper Fi
An instructor that I had in junior college told me about a squadron of Corsairs landing on one of the new airstrips in the south Pacific. He told me that 6 of the Corsairs didn't land successfully but cartwheeled down the runway.
And your point is?
@@flycatchful Lack of training in the F4U Corsair.
Eventually, Rabaul with its sizable garrison was bypassed & allowed to wither on the vine. Many of the garrison worked as farmers to stay alive.
It was actually one of the safest postings for Japanese infantry in the entire war.
We lost many good men in that war. R.I.P.
Yes, Field Surgeons like my grandfather had to sort the wounded into three categories:
Those we can & should save,
Those we might be able to save once we are done with "can & should save",
and those we can't or shouldn't save...
Yes, all that money to fight the right, and to think of how many right wing people lived, and live in our great nation!!! It is such an insult to these great Patriots sacrifice!!!
Im pretty sure there was a Japanese pilot nicknamed that as well!
Edit here: "Lieutenant junior grade Tetsuo Iwamoto fought from 1938 until the end of the war. If there is a top Navy ace, it's him. Iwamoto claimed 202 victories, many of which were against U.S. Marine Corps aircraft, including 142 at Rabaul."
142!!!
Thank you Sir for our freedoms .
Lest we forget , thank you for your service .
The RC Corsair I just purchased has the familiar Dk Blue paint, but the belly is light Blue and there's a geometric design on the hose-nose right in front of the cockpit. I've also seen the design in photos and videos but don't know what it signifies.
Very nice. I hadn't heard about Hanson.
But when will you do a piece on Dave McCampbell, the foremost Navy ace, with 34 kills in a single tour of carrier duty to the Philippines. Lots has been written about McCampbell, but I don't think your channel has covered him (or if it has, please point me to it). Thanks for all you do to preserve our history!
I thought maybe MCB Camp Hansen on Okinawa was named after this aviator. But that base was named after Pvt Dale M Hansen, a Marine infantryman who was awarded the MOH for his heroic actions in securing Okinawa. Also that's HansEn, not HansOn.
1LT Hanson actually exceeded Maj Boyington's kills record, if you allow that ''Pappy'' inflated some of his AVG scores. I was not aware of his story.
OBTW, the ''Ki-'' designation on IJAAF aircraft is pronounced KEE. It is Japanese aviation shorthand for ''Airframe.''
So sad, this end of Hanson.Heroes like him, helped the world to get free from the Axis forces
The KI-61 looked like a cross between a P-51 Mustang and a Bf 109.
My Uncle Walt said they once watched a Corsair mess up a landing before crashing into the water.
They had to take their PT Boat over and retrieve the pilot.
If governments spent on peace, the money they spend on war, how much better life would be.
There are more men on one aircraft carrier than total number of diplomats in the US State dept
Terror in the skies, dies because he attacked a lighthouse...
9:21 - Wait, what? Torpedoes, Airfield.
Well, not quite. Avengers were often used as bombers, replacing the torpedo in the bay, with a bomb load...
Respect. Rest in peace.
Thanks to all who participated and served in the Military 🪖 🙌 🙏 God Bless You all
Then why is the thumbnail a picture of a He-111 nose gunner? 😂
I don’t think that’s a HE-111 gunner. That looks to be a us m143 mini gun mounted in the rear of a CH-47 Chinook. Either way it’s a click bait thumbnail
Because the guy who made the video has actually never seen a WWII documentary.
R.I.P.
Awesome. Thanks.

The actions of TV show named after the Black Sheep Squadron
Curious a talented flier like Hanson would get separated from his squadron on not one but on two different occasions and wrack up significant victories in the process. Dropping a wing into the drink on a strafing run is another curios event for a highly skilled pilot to let happen. The old saw goes, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old, bold pilots".
I thought the same thing.
"Fall was about to happen in the South Pacific..." who writes these stories? There is no "Fall" in September in South of the Equator, Pacific tropics.
That is why it's the Greatest Generation. BTW, the weapon aboard an aircraft in the picture is from a much later time.
Why are you showing a guy with a mini gun in the still photo?
Exactly. WTF this has to do with WW2 is beyond me. Other than folks like us will click just to see WTF it could possibly have to with WW2. File under clickbait, and misleading clickbait at that.
LOL!!!! It amazes me that over 1million people have subscribed to this silly channel!
The Marines should have pulled him from combat and made him an instructor
WW2 and dude is rocking a mini gatling on the intro🤔???!!!!

Get Some! Get Some! Get Some!
As usual, pictures do not always match text. 8.33, Zeroes? With fixed undergear? These stories are great, but why not take more care about the picture material?
Why is the thumbnail highlighting a guy on a minigun during Vietnam?
planes seem to change so much so fast......i prob could take off in a ww2 plane but id have no clue how to get an f22 or whatever in the air...id prob just start pushinsh and yanking stuff until i ejected myself lmao.....oh id def screw up the landing if i managed to get a ww2 up.....maybe a ww1 plane is more user friendly?
Don't you mean.... I am sixth ?
I'd think ww1 planes would be less forgiving. Stall speed and lack of power(compared to ww2 era aircraft)...but if you grew up flying/learned to fly that era of plane...you'd probably do better in that era than a ww2 era. Good call tho...
f4u Corsair, whistling death japs called em!
Sopwith camel the cylinders rotated creating massive torque
You have to do all the thinking in anything from the WW I & II eras. There's a whole lot of computer help flying today's aircraft.
Camp Hansen, okinawa. spent some time there
I didn't even watch this one because the thumbnail featured a weapon that wasn't even invented until 1963.
The Dark channels really love to describe everyone and everything as "Insane".
The minigun thumbnail and a flight helmet from after ww2 was weird
1:00 sorry but there’s no way, if he was low on gas and bullets that he could have taken down five planes. That doesn’t meet the qualifications for “being low on ammo or ammunition.” Js
161k views w 5.6k likes is a war crime
I love the footage from WW2 propaganda movies showing pilots using a handheld mic. Never happened. The "throat mic" was the only thing they used after the 1930s.
6:17 *Nothing Worse than Jettisoned Prematurely !*
Unfortunately, his pride got in the way, careless. Not to deminish his achievement, awesome character, but pride is the downfall. I bet Boyenton learned his time in a POW camp in Japan. He got shot down and captured.
It was during the Solomons campaign that Japan lost its incredibly proficient aviators. As a result of Hanson, Japan had to fight the rest of the war with inexperienced, poorly trained pilots. using increasingly obsolete aircraft.
First pic of a "Japanese fighter aircraft" is of an Aichi divebomber. . . . . . . hope it gets better. But I doubt it.
Why is there a picture of a guy manning a mini gun on what appears to be the rear ramp of a MH or HH-53 helicopter doing attached to a story about the WW2 rescue of Pappy Boington.
Random thumbnails are a specialty of this channel.
Damn, died 1 day shy of age 24.
Torpedo bomber attack of an airfield?
Avengers could carry bombs instead of torpedoes. This kept them relevant late in the war when Japan didn't have many ships left.
The American dollar has been worthless since 1973. So why all the recent uproar? Who cares if its worthless oversea's. The only thing that matters is if the American People are willing to work for it .Because they can grow or build anything! Thats the only value it's has fo decadades. America has a massive ability to grow food. Don't forget that.
over-blown................
What does the man in a gun bay and a mini gun have to do with this, that didn’t exist in WW2?

Dark Docs: quit using phoney photos as your "hook". The hook photo for ths doc is of a 7.62 minigun and the rear door of a C130 or a Chinook helicopter. Phoney photos are not necessary.

I clicked on this video, because I was curious who exactly was using a minigun in WWII. Click bait.
Isnt it pronounced ra bool? I may be wrong
Rabaul is pronounced as in the video.
I lived in Rabaul for 6 years.
At that time in the war, the new american plane was far superior to the japanese zero. I know this from playing Pacific Air War on the PC. Therefore, the American pilots had a huge advantage.
🥹😅😂🤣
The zero could outturn the Corsair, so most dogfights were hit and run style.
Those USMC fighter squadrons were excellent, but if a pilot was excellent, but not white........
don't think ww2 had Gatling guns? just say` in!
More than any other Allied pilot? Dick Bong would like to have 40 words...

Well your comment does not surprise me... The Japanese education system only teaches two things about WWII.. Pearl Harbor and the A-bombs.. nothing else like how they treated those areas they occupied and the truly horrific things the military did to them.. and you and the other Japanese people today still wonder why most countries in Asia still have long memories and strong feelings and words about Japan.. 🙄 It's not propaganda especially when you know VERY LITTLE about what Japan did..try educating yourself a bit more so you understand things better!
