Like in each arc of Demon Slayer where Tanjiro is having his thought monologue about how he must focus and prevail bc of the people he has lost and those risking their lives and then he magically pulls off a new powerful form he's never practiced

I think this is why Mia Corvere is a character I love bc she's not perfect and we see her learn from mistakes

Thank you for the shoutout Andrew!!That was so kind of you :)
I think the other point about agency is it doesn’t just refer to the inciting incident (as you so deftly explained through Frodo). Maybe there’s a point to them having a lack of agency at certain points in the story, but it needs to serve a purpose in the overall narrative.
The memory police by Yoko Ogawa comes to mind here. The main character has almost no agency throughout most of the story so the one choice she DOES make is a big deal.

    • @the_fools_tale
      @the_fools_tale  3 месяца назад

Completely agree! I was only using the inciting incident as an example. I’ve had The Memory Police on my tbr for too long!

@@the_fools_tale oh I think you showed a later choice brilliantly with Frodo :) He’s swept up in the beginning but it’s his agency later that changes the fate of everyone.
And it’s definitely worth your time! A very contemplative book.

So fun to hear everyone's takes on this!! And I agree with all of them, especially the childish behaviour and telling not showing personality. Great video as always, Andrew!!

I slightly disagree with the first point! I think in every skill there are people who gain proficiency extremely quickly. Obviously a child chess prodigy will not beat a GM day 1, but after 2 years, there are people who can beat people who have been training their whole lives easily. I think with physical skills the same is true, but there is the limit of like you are just not going to be strong enough in 1 - 2 months of sword training to beat someone who has been training their whole life.

I totally agree about Kvothe! Kvothe is like maxed out all stats except wisdom. His fatal flaw is his impulsivity and making unwise choices.
If you watch Demon Slayer, I think Tanjiro is a great character with a flat character arc. Iroh from Avatar has a minimal character arc, but its still fairly flat. I think a lot of the good versions of this are characters that are already amazing people and that we the audience have something to learn from which adds to the engagement.

That’s a fair point! But yeah there’s a limit. It’s all about how it’s executed

Cheers for reading out my comment, I’m so happy others agree that immersion is a gamebreaker for fantasy protagonists. I totally agree with the whining everyone else said too. Great video, as always! :)

I liked how in your book the main character never figured her powers fully out. She’s very new to the powers, I kept expecting her to just suddenly have a big breakthrough and be really strong, but instead we get much more natural and interesting growth. Then we also got some interesting hints that her abilities might be a bit different.

the mary sue thing is one of the characteristics that make me avoid a lot of popular fantasies nowadays. All the girl protagonists are frawless and talented and good and beautiful etc, but characters without flaws are simply boring! I like Rin from poppy war very much because of this. She's childish, greedy and annoying sometimes, but it's waaay better than the flawless beautiful heroic protagonist that's always so loved.

Ark story of a character? ...or the lack in case of Sherlock Holmes...the point of his story? Simple: MYSTERY & a over the top smart person! You read The Hound of the Baskervilles for the Gothic setting and question is there something paranormal going on....not for the hope Sherlock is going to apologise and make you a cup of tea. 🤨
    Other way around:
What is the point of James Bond or the hole bunch of Mission Impossible movies? Do they change or only their Gadgets do?

Why do people dislike immature characters? I mean, people just are immature. All the "immature" characteristics you summed up are very, very prevalent with most people. I see them throw tantrums all the time and get away with it (especially men). Immature behavior is realistic. And in war? I'm a historian. No one so greedy, egotistic, manipulative, petty and vindictive as a warlord. I would even say it's an integral part of warrior culture. All those, dukes, kings, emperors: they where competent and charismatic at best, but even then they threw tantrums, they where overly proud, greedy and petty.

I was expecting a book recommendation without 16-years old girl in love with a 1000 Vampire...because we all agree we don't like it tha tway....and we still get some human+vampire romance to read without cringe, yes? Or there is no hope?
Just name of for my TBR.

I hate that we keep trying to mainstream fiction. It's as if not talking about something means it no longer exists. So frustrating.

Too much anxious navel gazing, constantly self-doubting. This is why I stopped reading Connie Willis: her character’s constant fribbling and internal insecure obsessions just bored me to death. Another one is insta-love, when two characters have never had an adult conversation…noooo.
