From Severe Poverty to Self-Reliant in Liberia

  • In Liberia, nearly 84% of families live on less than US$1.25 a day, and 47% of households are food insecure. This is due in part to a 14-year civil war (1989-2003) that crippled national infrastructure and basic social services.
Elder S. Gifford Nielsen and Elder Alfred Kyungu of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined World Food Program USA President and CEO Barron Segar to observe the home-grown school feeding program supported by WFP, and took some time to assist in serving meals to school children in Careysburg, Liberia in mid-January 2024.
The convoy of WFP and Church leaders also visited rural communities in neighboring Bongo County, where some 750 farmers and their families are learning to be self-sufficient at the Margbeh Farmers’ Cooperative.

I love this. I live in South Africa and self-reliance is such an important part of bringing people out of poverty. 30.3 million people that's about 55% - more than half the population in South Africa live in poverty. This work in Liberia has touched my heart. I love Africa and the people of Africa and it's so wonderful to see The Church helping people to help themselves.

One of the many reasons I love and am happy to pay my tithes and offerings. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done!”

God bless our wonderful brothers and sisters in Liberia!
Heavenly Father can really transform us both temporally and spiritually to be one when we choose to help someone. The world health organization, and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are becoming one with the Liberian people. This happens when we help one person at a time by showing our love for them, which also shows God's love for them also.

If they do farming, the church and partnered organizations can donate machineries for farming and seeds for variety of plants that can survive in the region.

More should know of The glory Restoration. These mini-documentaries should be getting more play.

On one hand, this is ok, and on the other is dependency, and it is not good. The handout attached to religion is colonialism at work.
Liberia needs investment to replace this. The investment is a partnership with the government to create institutions and an integral framework to underpin the development and work to mitigate poverty in all areas of Liberian society.
