If you are moving between the backend and the front end logistics of various projects than that means you are taking on Superintendent duties. That means you don't touch the tools anymore. There is only so much a guy can handle. The Foreman's job is to run the crew, keep them supplied, and coordinate with the other trades regarding the build out. That is it. Their job is to be focused on the the build out and making sure their crew are focused on what they do. Anything else leads to stress and stress leads to loss of focus and eventual burn out. It is not the Foreman's job to deal with the front end or the back end logistics of the job, that is the Superintendents job. It is not the Superintendents job to be focused on the details of the build out, that is the Foreman's job. Remember that and don't be taken advantage of. These guys are going to turn you gray, mark my words 😁 I know. I've seen it and felt it. Don't be grateful that your uppers are doing their job, expect them to do it. A lot of these older guys are on power trips. The white hard hat move was a power trip. He should have asked you if you want to take on a foreman position. Remember that your boss is not paying you out of his pocket. You are payed from the contract. Stress will take your health and personal life into a bad place. Good luck brother.
Congratulations! Your tips have helped me out a lot so far. I was just taking a break from practicing/recording my interview answers on my laptop and saw you uploaded. I have my interview with Local 48 next week! Maybe I'll see you around someday. One quick question. What's the need for apprentices like for 48 right now? How many classes do you think they might take in on this next round?
I’m very fortunate in that regard. Our leadership team at the hospital where I work is incredible, and I’m convinced that it’s really because of them that I’ve even been remotely successful in my new foreman position. ⚡️
Congratulations, it's not about age. This is coming from a 41 yr old apprentice. I would be comfortable learning from you. Keep going and ignore the hate.
Not too uncommon. We regularly have apprentices running work in their last year of apprenticeship. Technically, they cannot be a foreman, but they are functioning in that capacity. The moment they get their JW and license, they get the foreman tag.
Damn. I thought you left for the same reason I did. lol I went into IT. Specifically cybersecurity. Love it so far. Less toll on the body and making very good money.
I really wanted to become a journeyman but it's been almost half a year since I applied to my local IBEW to be an apprentice and have had zero response. Guess I should look elsewhere. Glad for you man (:
@@MadElectrician A big part of why I got a great rank (just awaiting the entry into the 2-week basic training) was because of you man - you deserve all the success for all the success you create in others
Congrats! Just remember being a foreman doesn’t mean you are no longer a journeyman. 2 bucks and a truck does not make one a master of the craft. This is coming from someone currently in a foreman role for several years now. Keep it humble and the guys working for you will respect you.
I've been thinking about getting into the trade, but I have no idea where to get started or how to prepare. I know it's physically demanding, so I've started working out.
I would do calisthenics paired with running so that all of your muscle groups build strength and endurance as opposed to only losing weight/ lifting weights.🙏🏼✅
@@thebeanz7838 "Calisthenics is a form of strength training consisting of a variety of movements that exercise large muscle groups, such as standing, grasping, pushing, etc. These exercises are often performed rhythmically and with minimal equipment, as bodyweight exercises." - As per wikipedia. But in short- I personally run anywhere from 1- 3 miles when i workout, and right after, i go into a routine of pull-ups, hanging chin-ups, push ups, monkey bars, bear crawls (on all fours), jump rope (jump rope has been crucial for my overall body tone and mobility- you might even try a weighted jump rope), and anything else that you would like to do that incorporates your body weight as the main resistance in your workout. I can't stress jump rope and pull ups enough. Your grip strength and abdominal strength will increase tremendously. Blessings!
Congrats bro! My IBEW pay chart at #332 is $72.80 for 5th years and $80.70 as a journeyman and $107 for GF here in the Bay Area. What state are you in?
Keep trying. Do anything to make yourself stand out. I quit my job and went to community college for 2 semesters and received a certificate in electrical/electronic maintenance. Hey Tony! Honestly, while I love this trade, I’d like to retire early if possibly. My goal is to continue working for another employer and on the side create multiple different streams of passive income. Owning my own business would be cool too though, and it’s not completely out of the question for me ⚡️

Brush up your algebra, basic electric theory, and get some experience anywhere that will offer it to you🙏🏼 Also try to decide whether you want to do commercial/ residential/ or industrial electric work. But that can also change over time depending on your interest level/ experience with each.
Thanks bro!! We’d be an unstoppable force 👊🏼 I’m sure I’ll eventually be interested in taking on that role if it ever presents itself. For now I’m very content with where I’m at and I just want to really get this whole foreman thing down and learn how to be the best I can be in this role⚡️
Do you know if unions or companies in the states honor hours practiced in Puerto Rico? If I were to move as a licensed electrician here do I have to start all over again as a helper/apprentice . I already have 2000 provable hours including 1000 of school.
If I’m reading it right you have 1000 hour of on the job experience. This is only 6 months full time and is not much experience. My apprenticeship program with the IBEW required 8000 hours on the job and 5 years of schooling to become a journeyman. If you were to get into the IBEW they would start you off as a 1st year apprentice. That’s not bad considering the benefits and starting pay that will increase every year. If you go nonunion from what I’ve seen they like to see 3-5 years minimum experience to receive their full wage. Nonunion doesn’t really have a standard to what a journeyman is. If the company calls you a journeyman you’re a journeyman. If you work in a state that requires a license you must obtain one from that state. So, you license from Puerto Rico is worthless.
Maybe I should change it to “Why I’m No Longer Working as a Journeyman Electrician” instead. That’s actually what my original plan was 😂 Thanks though!!!
I have a problem. I've been struggling with online school. the courses are online and i have the freedom of doing school from home after work. (Sounds nice right?) The apprenticeship is also very cheap around $5,000 for 4 years of schooling. I'm a 3rd year and only completed 1 year of online school. so, in other words, I'm falling behind. I'm 21 years old and I've saved a good amount of money. i decided to quit my job to focus fulltime on school. I don't have any bills to pay and in my free time i help my family with small projects. Ask questions, no question is a stupid question. Be on time in the morning, after lunch and don’t be the last one in and first one out. Also make sure not to be on your phone a lot. Old head electricians hate that and learn how to read a tape measure
Most important thing is to have a positive attitude all day every day. Don’t forget you are at the bottom of the totem pole. Respect your journeyman and foreman and they will respect you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be lazy, put effort into your work.

Congrats, that’s an amazing achievement!
Thank you very much!! ⚡️
Having support and good leadership will help you succeed.
I’m very fortunate in that regard. Our leadership team at the hospital where I work is incredible, and I’m convinced that it’s really because of them that I’ve even been remotely successful in my new foreman position. ⚡️
Man this is awesome congrats on your new role
Thanks! I’ve been really loving it so far ⚡️
Congratulations man🙏🏽 your channel has inspired me to take the leap
So happy to hear that! It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I’m sure it will be one of the best you ever make too ⚡️
@@MadElectrician well I got the news, I got the apprenticeship!! Thank you for your videos and giving us a template and what to expect when applying.

You're just cut like that! 💯 natural leader, naturally mature and stable and probably 120+ IQ.
Congratulations, sir!!!
Thanks!! ⚡️
Hard work really pays off 👏🏾👏🏾
You’re darn right! ⚡️
Hard work also puts a target on your back. It could be the very thing that spells your downfall.
Just found out about you and watched 6 videos already. Awesome channel brother
Hey, right on man! I’m happy to hear that you’re enjoying my videos! ⚡️
Congratulations, it's not about age.
This is coming from a 41 yr old apprentice. I would be comfortable learning from you. Keep going and ignore the hate.
gratz on promotion you definitely deserve
your tip was actually practical and professional coming from true experience
Proud of you!
Thanks, Dan!! ⚡️
Click bait got me haha! Congrats on the new position mate. I've been a foreman for about 6 years now - wouldn't go back

You guys make damn good.. I was from IBEW local 1 from Missouri… best of luck brother
Thank you very much! I appreciate you watching! ⚡️
I understand the feeling of having to live up to journeyman standards . The hands on portion is the easy part . Your now in customer service !
He’s now learned to be the clickbait king let’s goooooo. Content creator points +1000000
😂😂😂
I’m experimenting. But more than anything I don’t want to lose anyone’s trust so I gotta keep it legit still.
I was tearing up there for a minute 😂 so proud of you and and your little family!!
You’re such a girl.
So awesome to see you and Zach here in the video comments! You're both the best! I'm very proud of you two and your family as well!
Wow. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 huge accomplishment
Thanks!! It’s a pretty awesome feeling. I’m really enjoying it so far ⚡️
Congrats from Local #113!!🎉
LET’S GO!!
Thanks for watching!! ⚡️
That’s really a great field to be in. Glad you’re enjoying it!
Very true. I’ve been an electrician for 25 years and currently recovering from knee surgery number two!
I really wanted to become a journeyman but it's been almost half a year since I applied to my local IBEW to be an apprentice and have had zero response. Guess I should look elsewhere. Glad for you man (:
You have to keep trying to get in
3rd time was a charm for me
That’s awesome!
Thanks!! I think so too. Loving this new chapter so far ⚡️
Kudos - you're next level
Thanks!! And I appreciate you taking the time to watch! ⚡️
@@tyd3407 Thanks for the advice! I'm been trying to focus on multiple muscle groups and light cardio. What's calisthenics?
Blessings!
@@tyd3407 thank you for your help and advice!
I'm pumped for you bro! More importantly how do I purchase that grounded hat?!
Thanks, Justin!
My hat is from World of Electricians! They have an Etsy shop with lots of different hats, clothing, and merch ⚡️
Congrats bro! My IBEW pay chart at #332 is $72.80 for 5th years and $80.70 as a journeyman and $107 for GF here in the Bay Area. What state are you in?
Wow, those are some fantastic wages! I’m here in the Portland, Oregon area with IBEW Local 48. Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Your a great electrician wow!!
Ayyo holy I didn’t know you finished your apprenticeship right when I started mine that’s too crazy
Thanks for all the content you put out for us. God bless. Where can I get a hat like that ? That’s fire 🔥!
Congratulations! I’m still trying to get in the ibew been chasing the apprenticeship for almost 2 years now!
If you are in the Illinois. it is almost impossible to get in the IBEW union. Try Carpentry.
Keep trying. Do anything to make yourself stand out. I quit my job and went to community college for 2 semesters and received a certificate in electrical/electronic maintenance. Then worked for a contractor in hvac, somewhat related. Then worked as a building engineer at a mall. I got in on the 3rd try. I didn’t know anyone in the IBEW and I’m in Illinois, lol.
@@andrewk7745 thanks for the advice I did about 2 years of pre apprentice work for my local ibew and interviewed after this comment. I was given a great rank and now I’m just waiting on the call !
@@andrewk7745 Good evening Andrew. just let me mentioned that when I applied it was in the early 90's. It is great that you did not give up. I am in cook county and back then joining a union it was all political , especially in cook county. If you are not in cook county it was a little easier, but I wanted to join 134 nothing else. For the past several years it has changed quite a bit opportunities are broader and requirements are less.
@@MB-ir8xf I got in in ‘97. I’m sure it was also a bit political, but I kept trying building up my resume and persisting with tenacity. Never give up!
What’s your long term goal? Retire in the Ibew and start your own business?
Hey Tony!
Honestly, while I love this trade, I’d like to retire early if possibly. My goal is to continue working for another employer and on the side create multiple different streams of passive income. I’ve been making some headway over the past few years and I’m seeing how possible that can be if keep grinding. Owning my own business would be cool too though, and it’s not completely out of the question for me ⚡️
Congratulations.
Thanks, Will!! ⚡️
One of my foreman was a JW when I joined. A few months later, he became a foreman. He did it in a year after finishing school.
But you? Wow, huge congratulations dude! That fast is insane.
Much support from 716
local 716 here too
hey sir. do you have advice for a 17 year old wanting to become an electrician?
Brush up your algebra, basic electric theory, and get some experience anywhere that will offer it to you🙏🏼
Also try to decide whether you want to do commercial/ residential/ or industrial electric work. But that can also change over time depending on your interest level/ experience with each.
what does sustaining work mean? i could not find anything online. thanks! love your channel!
I’d be lucky to be your apprentice! Congrats on the new foreman position. next stop, GF?
Thanks bro!! We’d be an unstoppable force 👊🏼
I’m sure I’ll eventually be interested in taking on that role if it ever presents itself. For now I’m very content with where I’m at and I just want to really get this whole foreman thing down and learn how to be the best I can be in this role⚡️
@@MadElectrician 🤜🏼⚡️🤛🏼
What’s difference pay between foreman and journeyman
Here it’s a 10% pay increase from journeyman to foreman. In my next videos I’ll be elaborating on how the pay all works in detail ⚡️
Congrats thanks for sharing
I really like your "ground symbol" hat. Where can I get one?
🤘🏼World of Electricians 🤘🏼
Hi Steven! Congratulations on becoming a Foreman! How is the work schedule like as a Foreman in the IBEW?
NGL I thought he said, "I'm a Mormon."
I was like...wtf does that have to do with anything?
😂😂😂
Usually happens quick for some people rhymes with regency
Congratulations
A little deceiving saying your no longer a journeyman!! Lol! But great job man, way to go!
Maybe I should change it to “Why I’m No Longer Working as a Journeyman Electrician” instead. That’s actually what my original plan was 😂
Thanks though!!!
@@MadElectrician just roll with it man
I have a problem. Do you guys have any tips to help me stay dedicated to school? Part of me is a little nervous. I plan on putting my head down and busting my ass to get back on track. Thanks guys. also, thanks for the video this helps me keep my head up.
I recently finish electrician class in Associate Builder & Contracts accredit! After you finished it you have to take the NCCER test to get the NCCER license? Does this count as apprenticeship?
Im 15 in Portland and im just wondering if being an electrician line man pays more then a journeyman
Congrats! too bad that no one sees my potential why i quit my goal to becone an electrician 😅
You mention working at this hospital, you're still union right?
Yes sir! It’s an interesting situation where we have a constant presence here but we’re subcontracted by the hospital.
@@MadElectrician thats awesome, cant believe i got a reply from you.
I know you made videos on this already but im kinda stuck right now and was wondering if you can give me advice?
Im 24 i have small construction background , slight carpentry, working as a team with crews, but nothing official just like side stuff . And i helped build a wire up a restaurant once but didnt know anything just shadowing.
So im desperately trying to become an electrician and ive been given vague advice on whats the best way to start. The nearest local by me is local 9 and 176. My pickle is should i just apply as a helper at any nearby company (non union) to get the best possible chance at applying at the local ( so i have somewhat real experience on paper with a company? Or should i just shoot blind and sign up and apply at the local? Im in chicago and ive been looking for people irl and online to help me decide the best possible route and im kinda stuck.
Im at a point right now where i cant sacrafice a mistake, as i made too many bad job choices in the past. I have a lot of family to take care of and i cant do college and within 5 years i need to be stable. And i know for sure this is what i want to become and master. Any info helps, thanks!
Hi, I need help. I am about to go in to take the njatc aptitude test battery and I need advice on study. For the past 9 months I have been studying out of my algebra book to get where I need to be. But, I do not know where to pull a legit study guide based on the actual test.
How do you choose applying to inside wireman or telecommunications?
As a 1st year about to start school and work for the first time ever!!! What can I expect and what do you recommend me doing as a first year?
Ask questions, no question is a stupid question. Be on time in the morning, after lunch and don’t be the last one in and first one out. Also make sure not to be on your phone a lot. Old head electricians hate that and learn how to read a tape measure
Most important thing is to have a positive attitude all day every day. Don’t forget you are at the bottom of the totem pole. Respect your journeyman and foreman and they will respect you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be lazy, put effort into your work.
