thanks again for more educational videos. Neighbor had a 12'x12' pad and sidewalk poured onto unpacked wet soil 2 weeks ago in Minnesota. No rebar. They told him since they were pouring 5-6 inches thick it will be fine. Looks like the weight of the cement is making it sink and affecting the way the water flows away from the house. Also a week of rain had pulled ground material out from under the edges of the pour on the pad and the sidewalk. hope the best for him. wish a pro like you worked on his home.

I was thinking what can I do to not upcharge... So I upgraded the concrete 😆. Note to self, never take the hit financially for circumstances you could not see during your estimation. A good rule of thumb to adhere by is to put that clause in your contract if it's not already or when giving your bid you let the customer know before hand, what is possible if the soil thing happens. Good job and excellent knowledge

If I were the homeowner...I would of requested 6 inches of that clay soil removed....and 6 inches of road base rock put down first....then do your rebar and high pressure concrete...even if there is an up charge.....a solid sub-grade is the most important aspect of any concrete job.

Interesting, my uncle used to live in that part of Orange near the Village Mall. When he bought his house about 20 years ago, they disclosed a slab crack repair where they cut out and redid part of the kitchen slab. I wonder if that was also due to the expansive soils as well that affected the house in your video.

Brilliant to key under that city sidewalk. Is there such thing as a root barrier to keep tree roots from getting under that new driveway? Like a 3’ wide plastic panel the length of the drive put down into a trench? Or would the damn roots just go under that and still lift the drive?

    • @OdellCompleteConcrete

      Yes there is root barriers.

We never use fly-ash in flatwork.
We always put 4”-6” gravel/base on the ground
We never, never pour on bare ground.
We never worry about which way to run bull float we just say bull float it and get those edges filled up ( we take a shovel and refill edge with concrete a shovel full of concrete would go 10-15 feet) I do not like my edges even a 1/8 in low.
Your joints always look good it is very hard to freehand those things. I always have to lay my aluminum screed board down.
