Jazz musician/student here, and huge fan of yours Anthony. I would say though that Coltrane's Ballads and Kind of Blue aren't really Cool Jazz albums strictly speaking, although obviously they are both incredible albums. Kind of Blue was such a revolution in Jazz in the sense that it really explored modal concepts of playing over static harmonies, which was wildly different to the far more common quickly-changing chord progressions which are commonplace in pre-modal styles like cool jazz and bebop. Cool Jazz was still firmly rooted in the harmonic movement of bebop; just without the intensity and fast tempos as you said. And in addition, I'd say Ballads is more of a hard bop album (despite the fact that the album does mostly consist of ballads, hence the name). The way Coltrane plays on the album and indeed in all of his material I would hesitate to call 'cool' in the way that cool jazz sax players on the list like Paul Desmond (who features on Time Out) and Ben Webster. It's much more rooted in a hard/post bop idiom. It's also important to consider that the cool movement was actually more of a callback to the swing era, as a rebellion against the aggressive, fast stylings of bebop. But putting that aside; excellent video and excellent albums!

ben webster isnt even a cool jazz musician hes a swing era musician. he was just playing some ballads in soulville. i feel like a lot of non jazz oriented people get ballads and cool jazz mixed up

Jim Hall's Concierto de Aranjuez ft. Chet Baker and Paul Desmond is my favorite cool jazz song. It's 19 minutes long, but it is just the best song to drive to. It's in my opinion a perfect example of jazz. The relationship and dynamics between the current soloist and the guys just accompanying and accentuating the current soloist is beautiful. And each transition from one soloist to the next is absolutely brilliant and unnaturally natural for it to be unscripted. I adore that song to death.
I'd also suggest Bohren and der Club of Gore if anyone's interested in a noir sound of jazz. Those guys go above and beyond, their music is the epitome of noir jazz. Their Sunset Mission album on youtube is phenomenal. Walk listening to that downtown at night, you're in a noir movie.

Great picks. If you're interested in some solo jazz piano, check out Thelonious Monk, specifically "Solo Monk" and "Thelonious Himself."

West coast jazz like Chet Baker and Miles' Birth of Cool is definitely up there. I don't like when kind of blue is called cool jazz

hey anthony, kool vid, to your comments about portrait in jazz i would add that the chemistry between bill evans, lafaro, and motion is the most attractive feature of the album. bill and his bassist especially combine in many beautiful and surprising ways that would make you think some of the improv was written beforehand, really adds another dimension to the music besides the complex moods
