You don't need any of those! I've been binding books in my tiny flat without tools just fine. Just use heavy books or smthg instead of the boards and clamps, it works exactly the same! You really just need the glue, paper, and cardboards if you want to make hardcovers (for paperbacks, just use cardstock). If you don't want to use cloth, use cardstock or regular paper for the cover (though the thinner your paper, the higher the possibility of getting wrinkles). I usually sew the signatures together before glueing them for extra security, there are plenty of tutorials on youtube if you want to do that.
Those are clamps (which are cheap and can be found at any hardware store) could be replaced with a heavy object. The purpose of him using the clamps is to keep the paper aligned and from being malformed so there might be other solutions to it. Hope this helped!
Looking at the final product of the sketchbook made me smile because, while you're showing us the blank pages, theres this sudden image of these amazing drawings going to occupy the pages. Im just so amazed, great job!
I love the way you show a long and sometimes difficult process like this. You make it look easy. This video gives me the courage to try it. Thanks a lot.
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!! Thank you so very much. The ideas presented in this "tutorial" has given me solutions for the so many pads I need to put together.

This comment is not in any way facetious: I love that you mic'ed the book as you glued the spine paper. Seriously, your attention to detail is remarkable. Also, if you did a video of thirty minutes of high speed paper filing, I think it would crack the recommendations list.
Very useful! I have an old paper back that I'm having to fix and I wanted a soft cover not a hard one because it's a 1000-page book. You have given me the solution I am so appreciative!
That’s a beautiful book & what’s a nice handwork of book making! Being in the big printing & making book business, I can appreciate your nice work👏thank you for sharing
This is wicked thank you so much for the video. I've been searching far and wide on how to bind a book I'm writing and this nailed it. Granite the book won't be as big as yours but I can experiment along the way. Keep up the great work!
When I was in school many moons ago, I always got tingles during reading time in classes or at the library. Just listening to the sound of pages turning in a book, or someone slowly crinkling up some paper in class during a test or any other quiet time. Paper is just the best ASMR for me.
nice "Perfect" binding style sketchbook i tend to be more "old school" on my bookbinding and use swen signatures on my books thanks for posting this video --Rick
I think that it would be a really neat gift! Today I quite randomly did a book with japanese bookbinding, no expensive equipment (superglue and cutter were enough). Friends rated it cool, so now I have an idea for their birthdays :D
Technically, that's not Perfect Binding but rather Case Binding with softer backers and no spine. Perfect binding is gluing the pages like demonstrated with the cover just glued to the spine and folded over on the edges with the edges trimmed flush on a guillotine cutter. Needless to say it was WAY cool.

I liked the sounds of the paper, the cutting and folding. Not as distracting as repetitive music which get on.my.nerver rather quickly. Thank you for showing how simple this can be.
The quality and application of the glue makes a big difference. Done right it works very well. But I have a couple commercially bound books using the method where pages are starting to come out.
@@hanelyp1 yeah as long as glue holds well and has a bit give in it when dry. We used to have fancy new textbooks for english class that fell apart bc glue just crumbled and fell off, together with pages.

Wow! You really surprised me a couple of times at the beautiful simplicity to your approach ( trimming off the ends that went past the cover) this was a wonderful video. I am so inspired, Thank you for sharing.
Perhaps, but I prefer the unadorned, straightforward sounds of the process--I am here to watch the craft in practice. Of course, I could turn down the sound of this vid and then choose my own music to play while I watch it. For some superb (but totally silent) bookbinding vids check out the YT channel of BookbindersChronicle (one of my faves).
Please don't beat yourself up about it! I am super fussy with music so I do this quite a lot when I don't like a particular choice of music on a vid. Bookbinding people tend to be really nice types so I'm sure we can all share ideas and approaches--Glad this channel continues to upload human scale and encouraging vids.
