    An Answer to Prayers
Devout servants of powerful deities, clerics used to be the game dull party heal bot but in 5th edition they ascend to greatness as one of the most powerful and versatile spellcasters in the game. Clerics can heal, stab, blast, and pray their way through D&D and what was once a boring playstyle is now a combination of cool abilities and powerful spells. Grab your holy texts and vestments and make a quick prayer as we go through everything you need to know in this complete cleric guide for dnd 5e.

I love playing clerics. My first D&D cleric was from 1st ed. D&D back in the late 80’s named Questor. Clerics in 1st ed were fairly generic. My current 5e cleric is a 19 year old female, albino fallen aasimar (ghostly white skin, silver hair, Night King like eyes) Grave domain cleric of The Raven Queen playing in the Curse of Strahd campaign. She was abandoned by her parents at the gate of the temple to The Raven Queen in Waterdeep and raised by the clerics that live there. She likes to sport dark eye makeup (like Pris from Blade Runner or Camina Drummer from The Expanse) to try to look more intimidating than she really is. This is her way to try to compensate for her lack of self esteem she has over her appearance.

You should do one of these for Divine Soul Sorcerer. Metamagic and Cleric spells make a powerful combination!

Life Domain cleric can be a realy powerfull healer because of the heavy armor and the level 6 class habilitie healing you every time you heal someone other then you If a healing spell, If you use a Lot of aoe healing spells like mass healing word and mass cure wounds, you can heal your team by a Lot because of disciple of life, also healing your self by a Lot, because you get the extra healing from the level 1 and 6 at the same time

I had a Bugbear that had a couple of levels of the Undead Warlock and Life Domain Cleric. We got trapped in a corridor one day having to defend a Wizard Prince from a Zombie Horde. Usually he's really quiet and passive, but his little buddy, the Halfling Assassin went down at one point and this man lost his shit. I gave him the Warcaster, Sentinel and Polearm Master Feats before, so he pulls out his glaive and lays down Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians and Guardian of Faith. Since he's a Bugbear. He got an extra 5 feet of reach with all weapons and between Sentinel, Polearm Master and Warcaster with a Glaive, I can hit anyone that comes within 15 feet with a spell. So, using the Form of Dread, this Life Cleric basically proceeded to turn into a demonic creature and starts machine gun firing off Eldritch Blast at anything that comes close, making them roll to resist the Frightened Condition, knocking them back 10 feet (repelling blast) and damaging them all with what was basically an army of ghost and various totem that worked like a gun turret.
Needless to say, none of the zombies got through and no one ever called the character a "Heal Bitch" again out of character lol 😆

For the War Priest bonus attack, they do come in handy at low levels. However, I also find they come back around during late levels when you just feel like pummeling stuff with your extra Divine damage.

I know this is an older video but I would disagree with your interpretation of the nature domain. They get a free Druid cantrip, which to me screams Shillelah to allow your wisdom modifier to be used with your melee attacks with clubs/staves at least. They have a very versatile divine strike allowing the cleric to pick the elemental damage type on the fly. Their level 6 ability is also very good as it allows the cleric to give in 30 ft/ or gain resistance to an elemental damage with the use of a reaction. While this may not be the best single class concept I have seen it as part of a Ranger multiclass with great success

How about the Symic Hybrid Acolyte who is tasked with going into the (gulp) actual wilderness as a Knowledge Cleric? I made myself one of the 'innocent but curious' types who proved his usefulness many times over with his arm-long list of Languages and skills. He also had the Body Modifications of Nimble Climber and Water Breathing so traveling in the wilds became a little bit safer for him and the party.
My all-time favorite has been a War Cleric who began his career as a Soldier and wound up as a Cleric/Paladin multiclass who became the tank of a four-person party with two Rogues and a Wizard who wanted to set the whole world on fire...literally.
Don't worry about the length of the video...Clerics have more subclasses than any D&D class and there's a lot to unpack.

I'm playing a Hill Dwarf Grave Domain cleric in an upcoming campaign and I can't wait because I get to do max healing to an ally within 30 feet and get the Spare The Dying cantrip as a bonus action at a range of 30 feet as well!! Also, cursing a creature to take double damage on the next attack AND being able to negate crits on anyone(including me) are why I chose this subclass!! Getting an extra HP every level up too is never a bad thing either!! LMAO

Clerics need to prepare the spell to cast it as a Ritual.

  • @williamnield7133

You said that healing word heals half as much as cure wounds but cast at level one its more like 75%
    life cleric:
    2.52.5(average roll on d4) + 3(assuming 16 wis) + 3(disciple of life) / 4.5(average roll on d8) + 3(assuming 16 wiz) + 3(disciple of life) = 81%
    All other clerics:
    2.5(average roll on d4) + 3(assuming 16 wis) / 4.5(average roll on d8) + 3(assuming 16 wiz) = 73%
In my opinion healing word is far better then cure wounds. The fact it has range and uses bonus action far outweighs the reduced healing. I personally prepare both but in most situation i think healing word is better.

I have to disagree with the take on nature domain clerics. They can be excellent fighters and have one less critical stat than every other cleric allowing you to specialize more. You just have to rely on sheleighly

So I am watching the archetype part of the video and realized something... Twilight Clerics are too busted. They can encompass 3 of the 4 archetypes rather easily and even can change to different ones with one long rest. They can buff your party with vigilant blessing, eyes of the night, and the channel divinity as well as protection against being charmed or frightened. Tank with its channel divinity as well as keeping your party healthy, and it even has a pseudo come at me ability with the channel divinity as enemies will notice and try to take you out first. Lastly, it has a great healing ability with the channel divinity. The only "bad" thing is the dps build and that's because its weaker than dedicated dps clerics. It's still middle of the road compare to other subclasses. And these are just the abilities, we haven't even started using spells yet.
Note: I'm currently a 6th level mark of the sentinel human, twilight cleric and he's been pretty great. Two sessions ago, we were surrounded by at least a dozen enemies and with one use of his channel divinity, none except for one npc went down that combat and that's only after one of the enemies kamikazed himself with a poisonous bomb. It didn't even down the other npc next to him and he was back up a minute later. I even one shot a guy by using a bonus action spiritual weapon, and the cantrip, toll the dead, in which I did 26 damage to them. It was wild.

Especially given all the shootings recently (and I understand that post production takes time, so not throwing shade), I prefer a different analogy for spell slots.
Namely, I think of them like arcane batteries. (Yes, I am currently playing an artificer, how did you guess?) Low level spells take 1 AAA, bigger take 1 AA, up through 9th level, which must be like a car battery? For most spells, you can use a bigger battery than the bare minimum and get extra potency, but that bigger battery gets used up just like the smaller one would have if you cast it normally. The batteries are powered by moonlight or tidal forces or something, so they recharge themselves overnight.
I love clerics. They're so versatile and fun, and preparing spells means that you can easily swap out a spell in the morning if you know you won't need it, and grab one you might instead. One thing I don't think you said about rituals: you still have to prepare the spell to ritual cast it, which is a bummer, but less and less of one as you level up and get more preparation slots.
