Hey guys! Thanks so much for the crazy reception to this video! I'm blown away it's bonkers!! Just wanted to respond to some common fair critiques I've been getting. 1)) a number of comments suggested that, without their normal food of fish, all of the Alligator Snapping Turtles would simply starve to death. I disagree! Alligator snappers are opportunistic, eating basically anything they can including crayfish, mollusks, amphibians, snakes, worms, water birds, rodents, even small alligators (1). But they don't just supplement their diet with stuff other than fish. In some areas, for example, 90% of their diet consists of freshwater mussels (2)(3). These turtles are not nearly as specialised in fish as some people have suggested, and their diet tends to consist of whatever happens to be abundant in the area. Therefore, I think that billions of triops, with many probably growing much larger than their ancestors in as short a time span as a single turtle's lifetime, would be plenty to sustain healthy breeding populations basically anywhere. However, I did make some mistakes! In my intro vid I asserted that Alligator Snapping Turtles were omnivores, but they are actually almost entirely carnivorous. I seem to have gotten their diets confused with that of the Common Snapping Turtle, which are much more omnivorous, with plant matter making up about a third of their diet (4). The only amendment I'd make here then is that herbivory would probably take longer to evolve than other lifestyles. 2)) Some people have pointed out that the size of the giant butterflies is a bit of a stretch, and on this one I agree. The biggest flying insect ever discovered, the giant Dragonfly relative Meganeura, has a wingspan of about 70cm (5), so it seems reasonable that this is an upper limit on size. I did neglect to mention that Kappa's oxygen levels are much higher than earth, as the c02 levels fuels plant growth that raises the oxygen. So, the insects on Kappa will probably grow to similar sizes to carboniferous arthropods, with the giant butterflies reaching comparable size to Meganeura. 3)) Others have let me know that a belt of literally BOILING oceans would lead to both a catastrophic runaway greenhouse effect, and eternal hypercanes that would scour the surface clean (Thanks to @pokemonfanmario7694 and @8kayydub8). I think my bri'ish was showing when i said 'boiling', as I meant more around 70 celsius or something. When it's hot in the UK we call it 'boiling' as a figure of speech. So yeah, that's still hot enough to cook you alive (in a few minutes) and would be very steamy, but not literally boiling. Hopefully these lower temperatures would leave the rest of the planet habitable. 4)) It's been pointed out to me that the monarch butterfly caterpillars lay their larvae exclusively on flowering plants called Milkweeds (6), (thanks to @arepenguinsawesome2279) so I'm adding them to the list of initially seeded species. 5)) Another seed list amendment is the Luna Moth. I just picked them because they looked super interesting, and didn't know that they exclusively lay their eggs in the canopies of woody plants (7). Since I don't want any trees on Kappa (yet), they're gonna have to go :(( 6)) I've also seen some questions pointing out that triops eggs need a period of desiccation before hatching, and that's normally the case. However, I've seen reports from Triops breeders that they often have some eggs from every batch hatch before they can drain the tank and dry them out (8). My guess is it's an adaptation to more effectively exploit resources in ephemeral pools that last longer than normal. So in Kappa's soaking wet world, any triops with this adaptation will obviously be selected for, and they'll expand rapidly. 7)) I might have to look at the insect list and add more in, as the pollinating plants need specific creatures to pollinate them. Wasn't aware of this before actually (thanks to @BT-eo4gh). Might need to add some flies in for example. I do really want this to be as scientifically plausible as possible, so thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! You still missed some extremely important things: 1 - Without natural predators (different from other turtles) why would a turtle keep it's shell? Over time, it is very likely that different groups of turtles will exchange their hard shell for things like mobility and agility. I have no idea how would that look like, it's your world, not mine, but it is an important point. 2 - There are species that adapt for very warm (even hot) environment, so your almost boiling tropical ocean will be a place where new species of turtles will slowly reach. An extreme example for such adaptation would be the volcanic snail. 3 - I don't know what your idea for the continents is, but if you have only two, there is a very high chance the planet itself will simply explode at some point because of the pressure build between the only two continental plates. 4 - If you add more continental plates, it would make sense to get at least small volcanoes. You can keep them to the height you said you wanted, no problem, but this will generate some diversity in the terrain. Volcanoes are a natural occurrence on any planet with active core (so earth-like; lava, magma and so on). 5 - One of the great extinction events on our planet is theorized to have occurred partially because of large amount of dead plant matter underground being set on fire by a super volcano (or something like that, it should be the extinction event before the dinosaurs, and the reason why insects don't rule the Earth from there on). If you want to prevent that, you might benefit from evolving something like gigantic worms that can eat a lot more than their normal counterparts so there is not enough dead plant matter accumulating deep underground over time to allow something like that to happen. Besides that, there are other things, but whatever, those 5 (actually 6 with the bottom one) are some of the major points I did not see you mention. It really is your world and you could ignore all of these, BUT you said you wanted to look at it in somewhat realistic way. You could use the volcanoes as an excuse to have a snapper evolve a literal metal shell, while it is a stretch, it's definitely not completely impossible. Oh, and last, but not least: the insects will also evolve here. A LOT. In the future of your world (under realistic circumstances), they will be what challenges the rule of your snapping turtles. I'm talking about insects the size of a Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex).
Love what you did with the first episode!!! Love the idea of there being only 1 vertebrate species!!! Also love the inclusion of the triops and their evolution!!! However I did want to suggest a possible scenario about the alligator snaping turtle. I find it hard to believe that the alligator snaping turtle is capable of surviving on just plants (life finds a way though) so I wanted to suggest a possible scenario... what if they were introduced to the world only when a few of the triops species get big enough to support / aid in the growth of a few breeding populations (an established population). Thinking about it I guess you could say that each species was probably also introduced into the world only when the other species that they depend upon were already established on said planet.
@@ghidorahlightning7693 1. He mentioned at least one species from each lineage (turtles, triops, and butterflies) that predated on turtles 3. He mentioned that there weren’t any continental plates. It’s all just one big plate. Not sure what that causes but that’s how it is 5. I believe that was from magma lighting up a massive coal vein under Russia, so they’ve got some time before that becomes a risk Also, I find it funny that everyone thought you had accidentally set up eternal hypercanes because of British slang!
(I already posted this comment, but I think it would get swallowed up by the ocean of other comments and I'm really curious) I have a question, what type of orchid was introduced? Because some types of orchid trees already grow up to 40 feet, and other types are far smaller. I know you mentioned that root systems came above ground in aerial root structures, so I'm curious if due to the overly stormy conditions with little cover that the orchid abandoned its typical structure in favor of directly gaining water from the air or if it was for a different reason. Also, I'm curious how this would affect leaf growth for photosynthesis, like if the aerial root structures take on the original purpose of the stem in addition to being a root, or if both root and stem structures changed, and if the change in root formation greatly affected leaf growth. Sorry if I'm rambling, I think this is a cool project and can't wait to see more about it!
It might be important depending on your timescales. If you don’t get mountain building, your hills are all gonna dissolve. I am honestly not at all sure what that environment would look like, but universal lowland swamps, might actually be pretty close. Given that your world was terraformed, it might be reasonable to assume it was a dead world, like Mars (which used to have plate tectonics, but cooled off too fast). It would also then be reasonable to assume your seeder civilization did something to start the world’s core back up, since that would be needed to have a magnetic feild (and thus not let the atmosphere get blown away by the sun). The plate boundaries waking up is going to cause a lot of exciting challenges for your turtles and triops!
Depending on how in-depth you like to go with worldbuilding you may find Artifexian's series on worldbuilding interesting. Everyone I've shown it too has said that its too in-depth for them but, I think that it still has a lot of useful info to provide.
FINALLY Some good turtle representation! With some downright stunnin’ art to go along with. But not just the turtles are given their due coolness. Eagle sized butterflies, big-sharks and an evocative planetaru setting? This might just be the most dang promising spec evo project I’m here for. Bluddy well done o7
The fact that you made all this by yourself is actually astounding. I know I’ll eagerly be waiting for the next episode when it’s released. Cheers man! Also, slightly unrelated, but I utterly adore all the forms that the Triops evolved into. Anomalocaris would be proud!
One type of triops called triops cranciforms has existed basically as is since the Jurassic. Anomalacaris, eurypterids, lobopobians , trilobites, copepods, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, tardigrades, ants, bees , beetles, earwigs, coakaroaches, termites, and horseshoe crabs would all be proud lol
Oh my gosh! This is so amazing! The art the art! It is just really good I truly love the painterly style :) I can’t wait for more episodes. This is so exciting!
Yeah, the art is somehow a near-perfect blend of both simplicity and being so pleasing on the eyes. I really wish I could draw this proficiently, because by God, I love it😭
@@IdioticDunce if it makes you feel better I couldn’t draw anything even if a gun was held up to my head, I lack the hand coordination to draw, so I write instead
Narration and speculative evolution is amazing. My only issue is with the boiling seas due to the extreme greenhouse effect. Water vapor is responsible for roughly 50% of the greenhouse gas effect on earth while only being 0.25% by mass. Near constant boiling of the oceans would very quickly lead to a runaway effect turning that world into venus. I think your planet nearly entirety covered with wetlands is entirely possible with a less extreme greenhouse gas effect and very efficient ocean currents dispersing the heat from the equator to the polls. I seriously loved your video and cant wait to watch more!
@@KappatheWorldofTurtles-tm6zb thanks for the responce! I wanted to add that anyone advanced enough to terraform a planet could definitely make the steam belt work if they wanted to. I think it's a great idea allowing for greater speciation and greater chances of bizarre creatures evolving! Also I am not an expert on climate change or anything and could totally be wrong. Seriously loved your video and can't wait for the next one! (I'm rooting for the mole turtles I wouldn't want to be above ground for those storms either!)
Not only is the idea really interesting but the Art is also spectacular and incredibly nice to look at! Great job and I’m excited to see where this goes
bro, i am working on a project so similar to this, doing desert tortoise, cactus, and bees. watching with huge interest. Love the art, well realized it feels, no crazy jumps, lovin it.
Instantly subscribed. It's gonna be interesting to see what evolves on this planet after a few million years. Also the art is absolutely beautiful. Glad you grew so fast, you had 690 subs when I subscribed and now there's more than 1.1k.
Real talk though, the algorithm gods must have smiled upon Kappa for this rapid growth in subs and views. Not that I’m complaining, as the algorithm is what led me to this video in the first place lmao.
I was not expecting much and was utterly blown away, I love the ideas, the charming bright artwork with its lush greens and overbeating grey storm clouds, the evolution infographics and just the simplicity of a concept with so much room for further *cough* evolution!
This video is great, everything was layer out so clearly. I loved how you showed each step of evolution with the diagrams. Simply amazing! Keep it up!!!
Stunning artwork, great choice of animals for speculative evolution (as a lover of reptiles and invertebrates), i will resume my opinion in a reference. "And you, young Skywalker, we will watch your career with great interest"
I'm guessing the battle for domination on Land will be between the *Snapping Turtles, The Neotenous Caterpillars, & the Terrestrial Triops* ?? This Spec Evo is so exciting 😍
Your video was amazing. I really like the idea of creating your own world . I am excited to see where this goes. Your hard work is also visible. I have subscribed to your channel
Man... Watching this the second time makes me want to create my own speculative evolution in a planet ruled by three dragon looking animals that rule over their own domain with plenty of food/prey items for them to grow and evolve, The Three dragon lords being : 1. Crocodile skink (Tribolonotus gracilis) : Lord of the Lands 2. great eared nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis) : Lord of the skies 3. Delhezi bichir (Polypterus delhezi) : Lord of the waters
I really like that you've made the planet's conditions (climate, tectonics, average topography, etc.) unique, rather than it just being Earth with differently shaped continents.
i dont comment often but ive gotta let you know that this is incredible work and very very well done. the ideas and execution are so fun and they really create a very interesting concept. i look forward to seeing more of this project in the future
I’ve been waiting my whole life for somebody to finally make one of these worlds about Turtles even better. I actually own an alligator snapping turtle as a pet but he’s just a baby.
I have saved and watched this video more then enough times for me to even try to count. You're reading voice, the music, and absolutely the art. It all serves as endless inspiration that i play in the back ground while i work on my own spec-evo art, and my other creatures designs. I really invested and looking forward to the next video. And i can say this enough but take you time so you can make it just as beautiful as this one. Great work dear sir, you have done a great service to the public ^_^ !
Same (the documentaries I mean), I got the DVD box set as a present on a visit to my grandma in Minnesota (me and this grandma never really got along so this was partly to keep me distracted) so yeah, I rewatched it a bunch of times!
@@GCleo-lv95 I think tis more interesting to see how they solve problems in their own unique way without vertebrae. Basically what will they have *instead* of vertebrae?
This guy literally became the founder of a new age of speculative evolution. I swear I keep seeing people doing a bunch of seed world projects these days, good on you bro!
I can see the burrowing turtles evolve to be somewhat like a bobbit worm but on land, like making their tongue look like a plant and lashing out at herbivores
man, i love how you approached the non turtle fauna! having crustaceans as the (current) dominant ocean fauna but being wholly outclassed as soon as they go inland to the swamps or the butterflies turning predatory! i also cant stress the excitement i have about the giant equatorial wall of boiling steam. it has so much potential for things to be further developed, much like the whole project. best of luck with it man, subbed with notifications!
As a Floridian, I am all for Alligator Snapper planet. I look forward to what you do with this project 🐢 (alligator snapper that converges on a crocodylomorph body-plan maybe???)
I have never clicked on something faster. As a fan of speculative biology, worldbuilding, and creature design, seeing a world based off of turtles makes me irrationally excited. Take my subscription!!!
YOUR ART IS SO GOOD!!! WHAT!!! I need to start learning digital painting instead of just digital sketching cuz wowwwww I AM STUNNED BY THE QUALITY ON DISPLAY HERE I legit want that shot of the seagrass as my pc background honestly
This might be one of the best and well made spec-evo videos I have ever seen! The animation, the narration, the well thought out species and those adorable icons! I eagerly await the next installment!
Speculative biology is such a cool genre of sci-fi, and I absolutely love the turtle world of Kappa you’ve made so far! Can’t wait to see where this goes!
This is absolutely beautiful, one of the most well-thought-out spec evo projects I've ever seen. I especially liked the use of tadpole shrimp (triops), that's really unique and interesting. I can't wait to see where this goes!!!
This is xso cool! I love your world concept, it's interesting and fun and you got imaginative and plausible species already up! The walking turtles look so cute! Also love the insect work, like the caterpillars and giant migratory butterflies!
It's amazing how, despite starting from an entire planet of Carboniferous Swamps, there's so much variety in the actual biomes. The Steam Belt in particular is a brilliant concept. Can't wait to see how this world evolves, especially once the oceanic crack widens and we get our first potential mountains.
I can't believe that you created this entire world on your own! The creativity that has clearly gone into each evolution of the creatures is astounding--not to mention the scientific part that makes this seed world really come to life. I'm SO excited to see your next video!!
This is one of the most amazing and well fleshed out speculative evolution projects I've seen, and this is just the first part too?? I am absolutely in love. Cannot wait to see more.
This is CRAZY unique bro, Most spec evos usually have fish or something but this is the first one eve seen with just ONE singular animal that I know of!!! (Minus all the Invertebrates ofc!) Man im EXCITED to see where this goes!!!!
Wow. Just wow. To quote Palpatine: “We will be watching your career with great interest.” Feedback, if you would like: Concept: Fantastic. Snapping turtles on a very well thought out planet. Unique ideas like boiling oceans have a ton of potential for creatures to evolve to survive in. Art: Perfect. No notes. Painted aesthetic, simple animation, and stylized icons for the evolutionary charts. Perfect. Narration: Solid delivery. Some cuts were obvious from the change in mic quality. Nothing some practice and editing can’t fix . Script: Very good writing, not overly simple or flowery. I personally would like more detail of the specific evolutionary changes that animals undergo, but that is personal taste. TL;DR: Incredible work! Please continue this series for as long as you have passion for it! Liked, Subscribed, Shared, and Commented on. Do you hear me algorithm gods!
This popped up in the side bar, really enjoy this world building stuff. Was devastated seeing that this is your only video! On the bright side, more to come, even if slowly. But that's alright, I can wait. Really amazing stuff.
I've never clicked on a video so hard before. Serina is peak sci-fi and the alligator snapping turtle is one of my favourite animals ever, so seeing a similar concept but with turtles makes me very happy. Keep up the good work! It's very interesting trying to imagine what will happen later WAAAY down the line and what kind life this world will produce
Dayum... That's a very original seed planet... It reminds me of Rain World with all its wet environments 😅... Also... I really like the idea of Neotonous Butterflies, I never thought of that possibility!
I love this. The only problem is the boiling seas. It would be hard to escape that without a runaway greenhouse effect. In future episodes, you can retcon this by saying it's not literally boiling, but just really hot. This provides a new biome for animals to radiate into. Turtles will be able to get super huge there as the higher the temperature, the larger reptiles can grow. Perhaps they become gigantothermic. As they migrate further north this could evolve into an early form of endothermy for them.
The presence of Equatorial oceans literally BOILING would actually have an utterly catastrophic effect - eternal hypercanes. Kappa wouldn't be a steamy world of marshes, it'd be a ravaged and endlessly battered atmosphere of thick and endless storms constantly sweeping and grinding down natural formations. Outside of deep rooted plants and grasses, Kappa's terrestrial surface would be scoured.
I love the art in this video so much! I love the way the artistic depictions perfectly showcase what each creature looks like and how it behaves without it being overly realistic. It’s a super cool and unique art style, can’t wait for the next vid!
One word, WOW, literally this is amazing and not even to speak about the art style! I'm in love with this, the evolutionary paths are well thought about and have been pictured and explained in great detail! I would love to see what happens next!!
I love this so much that I’ll be making a custom AI tool that allows users to input there own variables and the AI will then create video and audio content ^^
OMG, I really love this! It's so cute and epic at the same time! Despite my mom isn't as nerd as I am, she loves turtles so I definitely had to watch this in his name! Eager to see how it continues.
This is my new favorite speculative evolution project. The ideas, art and presentation are just excellent. Wishing you the best of luck with this project!!!
Neotenic caterpillars are beyond cool. I often found the caterpillars even cooler than their adult forms, so seeing a caterpillar that basically never grows up is dope
I'm not gonna lie. This sounds like an amazing world to see. Keep up the good work of the world of Kappa, and this video made me love snapping turtles now
I’m glad to finally be able to see a cool speculative world concept/project like this from its very beginnings! Specially one centered around some of my favorite animals
This was absolutely stunning to watch, im amazed at the world you have created and i am absolutely stoked to see what you have in store next! man... truly amazing to watch and very inspirational as well
i love how dynamic your art style is, the shading and color combos are stunning. i am very excited for this series, especially as someone who enjoyed serina (and other such projects) so much.
This is so cool! The environmental setting and how the different fauna and flora adapt to it feels very well thought out. + The art feels unique and is awesome too. Very well done so far, cant wait to see the next episode!
This is beautiful. This is one of the best things. It is grounded and incredibly well-thought out down to biomass movement. So wondefully developed from such simple basic components into an entire multi-faceted world, and so beautifully illustrated! Deep spec-evo projects such as these are honestly what kid me always dreamed of and always wanted to read, and this brings me both immense nostalgia and profound joy! Love it so, so much, looking forward to what's next for your world of grass and turtles.

As someone with a geology background, the idea of playing with natant plate tectonics on a terraformed world is super cool
i don't know much about geology tbh so i guess i better get researching haha
I feel like you could have at least added some fish
Depending on how in-depth you like to go with worldbuilding you may find Artifexian's series on worldbuilding interesting. Everyone I've shown it too has said that its too in-depth for them but, I think that it still has a lot of useful info to provide.
@@PteranodonLongicepsGen1 there will be eventually. Its a very successful body plan, I'm sure something will emulate it

The fact that you made all this by yourself is actually astounding. I know I’ll eagerly be waiting for the next episode when it’s released. Cheers man!
Also, slightly unrelated, but I utterly adore all the forms that the Triops evolved into. Anomalocaris would be proud!

The algorithm has blessed me today, this is truly awesome and the art is beautiful
Thanks for the crit, wasn’t aware of that! Will have a think
I don't think that it was _literally_ boiling. It couldn't sustain that because the entire planet would be permanently clouded.

Wow. Just wow. To quote Palpatine: “We will be watching your career with great interest.”
Feedback, if you would like:
Concept: Fantastic.
TL;DR:
Incredible work! Please continue this series for as long as you have passion for it!

Also... I really like the idea of Neotonous Butterflies, I never thought of that possibility!
*GASP*thats actualy tru!
I was just about to comment this was like rain world with the regular storm cycles XD
As they migrate further north this could evolve into an early form of endothermy for them.
a literal boiling sea is a really fun concept to have though xD
@@jamescanjuggle So is magic.
