he is a christian musician. he might be different from mainstream christian music, but almost every one of his songs has, on at least a deeper but discernible level, reference to his faith in christ. many of his songs (which, in my opinion, happen to be the most beautiful) are overt professions: casimir pulski day, concerning the ufo sighting, for the widows in paradise, man of metropolis steel, predatory wasp, vitto's ordination song, etc... most of his music does more than "scratch"
@baboonsunshine I think the thing that "never happens" in Bible study is his friend getting better (i.e. getting cured of the cancer of the bone). Haven't heard of these interviews, any links/quotations?
@baboonsunshine The person I was responding to implicitly claimed that singing in a song about how prayer doesn't cure cancer is the same as stating that one is an atheist. I don't know about whether his first album reflects his personal beliefs, though he is a Christian.
Sufjan's just one guy, not a band, and he is a Christian yeah, but while this influences and informs some of his music he's not *just* a Chrisitan musician, he writes songs about pretty much everything. Seven Swans is his most Chrisitan album, the rest of his stuff only really has snatches of it.
@greenboymonkey sounds like G#m-B-F#sus-F# for most of it then it goes to C#m-E-F#sus-F# as a sort of bridge. That's the basics of it, if you want to add more tone color to it, I'd suggest making the minor chords inot minor 7ths, and do "add 9" on the B and E chords
@nommomuntu it really isn't about converting one way or the other. Religion can be screwy, and it hurts a lot of people. I'm sorry if it, or the people involved with it have hurt you. Truly. G-d isn't to blame though. You really can go to HIm. It doesn't mean your giving in, or buying in to the bullshit that the religious zealots are selling...
It's nice that Sufjan is a Christian, but I don't find anything appealing about his rather tedious music. Are you kids all kidding yourselves or what?!!
One of my favourites, it has a soft beautiful message without any push, and such a unique beginning. I adore.
