    The reason Stephan was climbing later in the video is because he's stressed and in too small of an enclosure, climbing behaviors are usually only observed in hamsters that are in small enclosures without enough space/enrichment/etc. Normally this manifests as monkeybarring in wire cages, but it seems Stefan is climbing the tree since the walls are glass. The idea behind this set up is awesome, and giving your hamster so much space to burrow is incredible, but that isn't a substitute for total floor space, reliable food and water sources, and a large wheel accessible at all times. I hope I'm not coming off as rude, I just genuinely want to help both you and Stefan by giving some advice. Maybe you could make a video where you upgrade the size of the hamsteraium, or where you get him a wheel made of natural materials. Overall, this is an awesome idea, there's just a bit of room for improvement.

    I clicked on the link, expecting to see this great big natural cage and instead I see... this. It's barely larger than one of those awful cages pet stores still sell (why aren't those banned yet?) and this little guy, while he has space to burrow, really needs a wheel to exercise and please, please, PLEASE give him a larger cage/enclosure! Seriously, this is far too small and I know it is, because I kept my first hamster in a cage that was too small (still larger than this one, though) and the moment I put him in his new terrarium I could see how much he loved it. He loved the space, love how he could burrow, and was overall much happier and showed far more natural behavior than he first did. I feel sorry for this little guy, in the wild they can forage and run so much further than this. You are not taking care of him the way you could be.

    he needs a wheel with a diameter of 8inches or more and the terrarium needs to be larger (minimum 80cm x 50cm floor space). soil from outside is dangerous as it can carry diseases that stephan is not used to due to being born a domesticated animal and could easily die from them suddenly. So if you baked/froze the current soil, put it in a larger terrarium (80cm×50cm+ but still giving 15cm+ of space to burrow), and a large wheel it would be much better (and Stephen might stop biting you)

      those spinning plates are not ideal. They are the 'cheaper' version of an actual spinning wheel. As the plate is tilted its hard for the hamster to spin in it as it always has to keep fighting agains the centrifugal force. The best thing is to have a normal, stand up wheel. He won't get bored in one of those.

I've seen people use ikea detolf shelves or really large plastic bins or aquariums for enclosures. The fact that videos like this are still up and unaddressed shows willing ignorance. Issues like this don't need sugar coating. This is animal cruelty. I know it might sound dramatic but there's nothing being done here. The cage is too small and everything in it can/will harm your hamster. Not to mention how wreckless it was to let your hamster roam around freely outside. If we don't see changes in the near future, we'll know how much they actually care about Stephen.

    I can see you care about Stephan very much and we all do cuz he is such an adorable fluff. Stephan needs much more, and even if you want to maintain and naturalistic setup you still need to provide him with more space, exercise, and ample food. Hamsters can self regulate food intake, and store bought pellets are not great but they are nutritionally complete. You can refer to some scientific research on the nutrients they need and create you own blend consisting of enough fat, fiber, carb, and crude protein. You can also add sprays, chewing toys (can be just wood sticks made of hamster safe wood such as apple wood, and other materials such as loofah, hay, and sweet bamboo sticks). For a better environment, rather then planting bioactive plants which can introduce dangerous pests, maybe try dry flower sprays. They can add nice color and extra sensory stimulation for Stephan. I think you are doing a lot for your hamster to try to create a natural environment, but I believe this might be sacrificing some of Stephan’s happiness.

Perhaps the commenters would like to build their own hamsterarium , turn it into an amusement park for hamsters; and put said hamusment park on youtube, i think they should go for it, and leave poor Stefan alone! He is clearly quite happy!

    • @Sabbiedebabbie
      @Sabbiedebabbie 2 года назад

      Did you ask him? 😂 Following basic logic, this would not make a hamster happy. Hamsters like to forrage and store food. He is only giving him little bits and pieces to eat, nothing to store. This is a basic need for hamsters that is not being met. Another thing hamsters do whole forraging for that food is run great distances. That is difficult to do in captivity, but impossible in such a tiny enclosure. He can dig which is good, but that is not all he needs. He needs to be able to explore and run around. The enclosure does not allow the hamster to find new things, there is not enough food to forrage and store and the enclosure is simply not big enough for the exercise and mental stimulation hamsters need.
      So in short; any hamster that does not have its basic needs met is not a happy hamster. With animals you cannot simply assume they are happy because they are, what, active? Or not in physical pain? An animal needs more than the basics. I am not even sure how you got to the conclusion that this was a happy hamster.

    I would say for a gerbil this set up is perfect. In my experience gerbils are more into digging than hamsters, like gerbils are obsessed with tunneling. My mom has this type of set up for her gerbil, and feeds her grains and worms, and her cage some structures made of wood. 80% of the gerbil cage is dirt because they love digging so much. Our hamster cage on the other hand we don’t use dirt, (but i’m not against that idea!) and there’s significantly less bedding and more space to roam. theyre both in glass tanks, but the hamster has much more layered structures for climbing and a wheel. Every gerbil we’ve had has been disinterested in wheels so we don’t give our gerbils wheels anymore. Pretty much i think you have a flawless set up for a gerbil. For a hamster, i love what you did but would remove some dirt, add wooded structures (like tiny shelves) and give him a wheel. Hamsters need a wheel. Other than that i love this set up, very cool and refreshing to see a hamster in something other than a tiny plastic cage with that fluffy bedding. Most hamsters lives are so boring, and you seem to really care about giving your hamster a full and enjoyable life.

    • @sarahcarntspel
      @sarahcarntspel 2 года назад

      I also just wanted to add that in my old gerbils enclosure I took a chunk of grass from outside and placed it in a corner, so i had a bit of grass growing for a while and the grains i would scatter around so they’d have to dig for them and sometimes they would sprout. I love the idea of moss though! i’m going to make that suggestion to my mom later.

    by the love of anyone who you care about please buy the damn hamster a bigger cage and a put in everything a hamster needs and loves.
    my fancy mice need less and they have more and I'm tinkering about giving them even more. planing to make two cages together. and my cage right now is at least tripple the size of your glass cage.
    the whole problem of this series is that the creator only cares about cool vidoes and esthetics while the hamsters need should have absolute top priority, everything else comes after.
    as cool as glass looks, it sucks for your little buddy. his whole tunnel-network is always fucked up because tunnels to all sides let light flood in. so he has even less dark tunnel space, which is what he needs. glass is also cold and animals rarely like the feel of walking over it. they will never use it as ground for anything and since even the ground of the cage is glass this hamster can build himself like 1 or 2 "rooms" if he doesn't fuck up...
    this animals are also very close to wood. they like the feel of it, the smell, the texture. everything. in nature they surround themselves with sticks and leafs and sometimes go nuts diggig their teeth in wood. just because dirt is everywhere and hamsters walk over dirt in nature it doesn't mean they prefer it. even if they dig their tunnels in dirt they choose places with a lot of withered plants and wood to strengthen their construction and make it more enjoyable for them (better smell because plants and wood smells better than dirt). this hamster is just always digging and looking for stuff to use to finish his constructions but never does because he never finds the materials he needs. that's actual torture...
    also... if he is biting you in your nail it's because we can't find anything with the same "material strength" to dig his teeth into... my mice understood after days they are harming me by biting into any place of my hand and since they don't want to hurt what gives them their favorite food they just don't. but they also have a shit tone of sticks and other material they can go full annihilation-mode in other words: they have everything they need.
    you earn money with this videos. give your hamster a fraction of it back, please I beg you.

    PLEASE upgrade his enclosure hamsters need at LEAST 450 square inches of continuous floor space (multi levels don’t count) and he needs an 8 inch WHEEL (flying saucers are no longer considered safe and hamsters can run up to 5 miles per night so he needs to get his energy out which is why he is showing signs of aggression) and the soil is not good for him especially if it’s wet (i recommend paper based bedding unsented or aspen that is at least 8 inches deep) also this species of hamster requires one THIRD of their enclosure to be sand (reptile sand with no added calcium is the best and do not get chinchilla powder because it causes respiratory infections) i know you want what’s best for your hamster but you heart the comments that give you advice but you don’t take it :( (if money is an issue than a diy storage bin is a great alternative) hope you see this comment

    Usually I would mention what everyone else is, that he needs a new larger cage and wheel but currently that may be hard to get. As the Ukraine is under attack. Hopefully the war can end soon so everyone can be safe and Stephan can get some upgrades.

      You can make bin cages for cheap. You use a rubber bin, that's it.

    Stefan goes to bed like I play Minecraft. Also, I like how you named your hamster after Stefan Johansson.

    There was an argentinian tv show called Topo Gigio in the 80s that I absolutely loved as a kid. This is the real life version. So cute 🥰,

    Dieses Terrarium ist viel zu klein. Für Hamster muss der mind. eine größe von 1m haben.

      This enclosure idea is probably exactly because of the shelling from Russia. It gives the little hamster 'a safe place' he can be moved to to de-stress. I am certain he is only in there part time.
      There are huge clues, including the greenery is still alive after several days, nor is everything trampled flat.

      Most hamsters don't have terrariums to spend there play time in, this is a great space away from where he spends most of his time...

    CRICKETS! Hamsters love to eat crickets, and catching them is good enrichment. I had two hamsters in a big terrarium- and had the shortsighted idea to put my feed crickets in one corner. Not only did they get the little plastic cricket cage open, they ate every single one- like 50 crickets in one night, then loafed around like lumps chewing on cricket legs for days afterward. Ooof.... terrible planning human!
    But after that I would give them a few crickets every once in awhile.
