All eyes will be on North London for the Premier League’s last bout of midweek action this season, as Arsenal fans find themselves in a contrasting position of having to support bitter rivals Tottenham when they take on title chasing Manchester City. Many would’ve written off Spurs before this past weekend as they were riding an awful four-game losing streak, but they got back to winning ways with a hardfought 2-1 win over Burnley.
That result kept Spurs’ slim hopes of a top-four finish alive, although to achieve such a finish they’ll not only need an end of season capitulation by Aston Villa, but also to win their own last two games. That begins with the hardest of all tasks with the arrival of a City team chasing an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League crown, but having won the last four home league H2Hs without conceding, Spurs could certainly sabotage those hopes.
City did eventually conquer the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this season though, as they came away with a 1-0 victory in an FA Cup tie in January. Producing a similar result here would create yet more history for the Citizens, as it would be a fourth consecutive away win without conceding, a feat they’ve never achieved before in the top-flight.
That probably won’t be at the forefront of Pep Guardiola’s thinking, as he’ll simply be wanting the three points needed to extend his side's current 21-game unbeaten streak (W17, D4) in the league and keep Arsenal at bay. That run encapsulates the reputation City have garnered as freakishly strong finishers at the backend of a season, but there is an exception to that rule, being that City haven’t won their final away game in any of the last three seasons (D1, L2).
Players to watch: Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski shone bright with a goal and an assist when these two sides met in a cracking 3-3 draw in the reverse fixture, taking his tally of goal contributions to five (G3, A2) in four league games against City. Attempting to steal the show will be City’s Phil Foden who also found the net that day, and will be full of confidence upon arrival having scored his last four goals all away from home.
Hot streak: Tottenham haven’t drawn any of their last 22 home games in all competitions (W15, L7).
