  • Shooting on the off leg (or back leg) means that you'll be driving all your weight onto the leg that's closest to your hockey stick. If you're a lefty, your inside leg is your left leg and that will be the one you drive forward as you shoot. If you're a righty, it'll be your right leg. In terms of progression, this is a shot we learn after mastering the front leg wrist shot where the opposite leg drives towards the net as you shoot. The benefit to shooting this shot is that your release is quicker, there's limited wind up time, and it's easier to shoot in stride and from odd angles. A definite shot you need to master to elevate to the next level! In this video Sean breaks down the four main positions to learn to take an off leg wrist shot from a stationary position, in motion slowly and in stride at top speed. 3:35 is what I keep doing. I still get a good shot off, but I'm obviously unbalanced at that point and could easily get knocked over. Good to know I'm doing it wrong haha

I just realized...I've always shot like this. I don't know why. I think that's been a huge problem with my shot.

When I was a little kid I learned first how to shoot off the “off” leg and I had a pretty good shot, now that I’m in my mid teens I am learning how to shoot off the traditional leg, I learned backwards, but I am dangerous with my stick

At what point do you recomend to introduce variation in the shot? since during a hockey game you can rarely shoot with perfect form, so it might be beneficial to train to shoot from weird angles and positions.

Hey Alexander! Great question. As soon as you've mastered the mechanics of the front leg shot you can move on to the off leg shot. Technique should be near perfect in games too!
