      I watch my dogs poop and have never seen an undigested raw hide show up. In the beginning I had never heard that raw hide was bad so I was giving him tons of raw hides. Unless he's storing them somewhere in his body, they are digesting. Has anyone ever seen an undigested raw hide exit? Where are they going if not digested? Seriously confused old new dog owner here.

    My dog loves bully sticks but recently one from a bag I picked up at target made her really sick. I figure it was cheaply made and not high quality. I only buy the safety chew bully sticks now and real dog box. Haven’t had ANY issues, my dog loves them and they don’t make her sick. Big win. Hi, I love your channel. Many more channels like yours are definitely needed.
    I started becoming aware of the many areas we need to question concerning our dog’s quality of life about 15 years ago. I’ve also done extensive research, which I will continue to do the rest of my life. Things change and new or better information and products become available.
    When we love our dog’s eyes want them to have a happy, healthy and as long of a life as possible.
    One thing you didn’t mention about dog chews is irradiation. The only chews company I’ve found so far that don’t irradiate their chews is Jack & Pup. My chihuahua’s love their bully stick chews. I even take the chews when they become short and simmer them in some water or broth until they’re soft and tender. Next, I cut them into long narrow strips with a heavy duty scissors and give them back to my dogs. That way they are able to enjoy the entire bully stick safely.

    @laurenmichero9003 Год назад

    I’ve been liking the Farm Hounds products since I saw a video about their chews and treats. They have a trachea chew that seems popular but I haven’t given it to my dogs. They like the treats and jerky as well as the toppers…they have liver and other organs as well as elk antler sprinkles and blood sprinkles which are nutrient dense but you obviously don’t get the chewing action. The Turkey and chicken gizzards are great for small dogs. My dogs love them and they’re well sourced and good for digestion. They are great crunchy chews but they’re easily broken apart if you don’t want them to have a whole one.
    I’ve tried the yak chews but they always freak me out now after reading about chipped and broken teeth. I like the rubber super chewer toys from Bark and the rubbery chew toys from In the Company of Dogs (HuggleHounds brand iirc). They don’t break down that easily and I don’t worry about obstructions, broken teeth, or too many additional calories.

    Rachel, this is so valuable - thank you!!!
    Question - when feeding raw chicken wings/feet/necks, do you take away any portion or are dogs able to consume the bone in it's entirety?
    Would love to share more raw and wholesome chews with my girl 💜

    • @RachelFusaro
      @RachelFusaro  Год назад +4

      I’m so happy! For raw chicken bones, I usually start with raw chicken feet (and I feed the whole thing). I start very slow and gradual
      Meaning I hold the raw chicken foot while my dog gnaws on it to make sure they know how to chew and not swallow whole
      Then I wait several days before trying again to let my dog’s GI system adjust
      Then after awhile I’ll do a raw chicken wing, hold it, let them chew for few mins then take away again to slowly introduce it
      And yes I feed the whole thing!

To me those bones are still cooked, they might be cooked at a lower temperature, etc., but all the moisture is taken out of them. So I think they are a high risk item and I will not feed them to my dogs. What do you think?

    • @edenshenk2969
      @edenshenk2969 Год назад +3

      When you cook those bones they splinter! Otherwise, the bones are fine raw. The cooking makes the bones more fragile and brittle, so when a dog chews on the bones it splinters and can get stuck in their system. When you don't cook the bones they are not very likely to splinter. They will not splinter the way cooked bones do.

    Chicken and turkey necks raw. My dogs love them, and they're fully digestible. They help to keep their teeth clean, too. I would _never_ feed my dogs cooked bones, though.
    Edit: When I had 6 medium to large dogs, I'd throw a whole raw turkey in the yard and let them take turns devouring it. They loved it! I fed raw for the 1st year and a half of my German Shorthair Pointer's life. My dogs at the time were various ages, sizes and breeds. Not one of them ever had any issues with eating raw. It's just a lot of work to do it correctly and I needed a dedicated separate meat freezer with that many dogs so I stopped.
    Again, if you do decide to feed raw, there's a lot more that goes into it than throwing them a raw chicken or turkey. They need various vitamins and minerals, etc. that come from different types of meats and added calcium (unless you can grind raw bones to powder.) Once you learn how to do it properly, it's easier.

    Anytime my dog received raw food she would get Bacteria Clostridium Perfringens. She can't have raw unfortunately.

    Anything resembling a rawhide substitute should never be given to your pet. It can cause serious intestinal problems, and we all don’t want that to happen as a result of giving them a treat. My GF gave our Morkie a collagen rawhide alternative dog treat two days ago and we had to bring him to the vet for what turned out to be a pseudo obstruction. He was miserable, couldn’t eat, and was vomiting profusely. It was terrible.
    $500 later and our vet was able to turn him around. It was Fieldcrest Farms Nothin' To Hide Bagels Rawhide Alternative Beef Flavor Natural Chew Dog Treat. Stay away from this product and anything like it.
