- Join us for a Saturday night out on the town in Longyearbyen! We are having a nice evening out in the northernmost village, enjoying some Norwegian Christmas food at the restaurant Gruvelageret. This restaurants has a lot of history and is located in a part of the village that was burned down! I hope you enjoy this video! 🧡

The story of how Steve restored the building and started the restaurant is very inspiring. Running a restaurant is a tough business under the best circumstances, and all those additional things that Cecilia mentioned shows a 'can do' attitude which seems to be a feature of Svalbard. A reminder that resilience is an important quality, and perhaps not as widespread as it should be..

Anybody else enjoying the vlogs while also researching flights and airbnbs to calculate costs for a trip to see Svalbard as well at the same time haha. I love the cold but stepping out the box for sure. It's definitely not cheap haha

I have a dear friend also named Cecilia. She’s from Finland but was raised by a Finish ambassador father all around the world so only partly sees herself as Finish. She married a Norwegian when they were both located in India! Gosh, I feel so sheltered. When they speak privately, like in a dispute or with relatives, it’s in Swedish! But anyway, she speaks English with only a faint accent, like you. His Norwegian accent is so thick I often just nod and smile. But his career put him in Los Angeles about 12 years ago, when we met, and they’re so Californian now that when they visit Norway they are in shock from the dark and cold, but still love it. As a native Angeleno, I’d die even in foggy Seattle! 😂 Kudos to you and so glad I stumbled on your channel. Love the aurora borealis! 💚 Thank you for sharing your stories.

Have to try Gruvelageret restaurant, I heard only the best about this place. I can see the building from my window(as much as you can see outside :) ), haven't had a time to go there since I arrived to Longyearbyen. Thanks for the inspiration. /P.

Actually at some point the chef at Gruvelagerer was Bulgarian and that is how I found Svalbard overall! I followed his stories on FB and read his books about life in the far north. He was as passionate as you being there near the north pole.
I love your way of life there and I am thinking more and more about doing something similar one day :)

Great video (and love the outfit)! Such an interesting story behind the restaurant, and all the work it takes to keep it running in such a remote location on Svalbard. Dessert looked especially tempting, a nice twist on the traditional rice pudding we all know and love (or love to hate, for some, not me!). Glad Christopher was able to join in the festive drinking after all!

Looks like you had a great time and ate great food and enjoyed great company. Grim is beside themselves because your time gone is something they cannot comprehend. It could be 5minutes or 5 hours. I noticed despite all the snow that you all get that the roads are in good shape in most places. Obviously the least travelled roads are not going to be in as good as shape as the more travelled roads.
Food looked delicious and so cute how Grim still won't walk on the kitchen floor.

What a beautiful place Gruvelageret, with the history. Nowehere near it, but in my house in Lévis i built my own studio apartment and salvaged 2 wooden doors from my hometown's train station when it closed down in 1998. One was red and the other blue, and i repainted them with the exact same colors. We also got some bay windows from when they demolished an overpass that was in the old ferry station and installed them (free 5' x 8' thermoglass that would be worth 1500$ each! i got 3 for free). My hometown has a rich train and maritime history and i have a clock i installed inside a restored round bronze ship window that came from the bottom of the St-Lawrence River. It came off a boat that sank, could be the Empress of Ireland. I also recuperated and restored the wooden sign from the train station which is over 100 years old (wooden) and carefully redid the hand-painted town name (LÉVIS) with a tiny rush in black & white, it took me 4 months to do! There used to be a similar sign in every train station in Canada. There are a few of those signs left in train stations in Canada nowadays, namely Jasper, AB. So i know what kind of work and dedication it must have took to restore and make Gruvelageret what it is today. The food looked like a 5-star restaurant fare. Awesome! ❤
