  • Aviation RUclipsr Dan Gryder was mentioned in the NTSB report on the fatal accident of a Cessna 208B in Heyburn, ID. Gryder trespassed on the site of the plant where the pilot had hit a tower, and took the light that was on top of the tower. He recorded himself doing both the criminal trespassing and the theft, telling his audience in his video that he brought the light back with him to Atlanta. In addition, Gryder has had a Protective Order placed against him in the case of a woman who complained of stalking in Louisiana. Gryder appealed all the way to the state supreme court, but his appeals have been denied.

After reading the NTSB report, there is more here that is not being discussed… The stacks in question are directly in line of the runway approach, improperly marked, and interfere with the standard three (3) degree glide slope. They appeared on the scene six (6) years before the crash but long after the airport was constructed. To make matters worse, they were extended further (higher) because they also violated EPA requirements.
There is no discussion in the NTSB report of how the stacks came to be or why the FAA didn’t do more to get them installed properly. But there is some additional stench here… This is a municipal airport that I suspect is more than a little bit reluctant to tell the significant tax payer potato plant to cease and desist and do something appropriate with their exhaust stacks. On top of that, this is the only runway that has a published RNAV approach and it has significant obstructions in the way. What is the FAA thinking? The bottom line is that this appears to be an accident that was waiting to happen.

    Some things to think about:
    1. Would anyone be talking about the light if Dan hadn't taken/pretended to take it?
    2. If it was actually crucial to the investigation, doesn't it seem like law enforcement and the NTSB didn't try very hard to get to the bottom of it or to retrieve the evidence?
    3. Dan shits on the NTSB every chance he gets. Is it possible they are exaggerating the impact of his stunt by mentioning it in their final report? Seems like a weird way to put it, especially with such little effort on their part to legally address it if in fact they had cause. Almost seems like they thought they could finally hit back but why be petty instead of using their actual authority?

It wasn't really clear in the video how he had access to the stuff. I was a little surprised/uneasy how he might of come by it all. The few parts he had taken from a couple other crash sites were all well after the crash sites had been abandon and official investigations had ended. Just small bits of metal that just never got fully cleaned up.
He acted like this was no different, at least until he said at the end of the video "I took their light" "I bet they will be mad" or something to that effect. Seemed like he was just being sarcastic and humorous, not that he had actually like stolen it. Heck, Mentor Pilot posted a video with AI generated thumbnail showing a captain angrily shouting and being violent with the first officer before a crash. I combed through the real report and found no mention of violence, anger, aggression, or angrily shouting. In fact the opposite. Pure slander of a dead captain and people eat it up. Dan’s always on about the FAA and NTSB being out to get him, but, unfortunately, he’s his own worst enemy. I still don’t think that Dan has bad intentions, necessarily, but when everything is a conspiracy and you wrongly believe that you know better than everyone else, well… you run out of grace pretty quickly. Dan clearly needs to see a mental health professional, and I honestly hope he can overcome his arrogance and persecution complex in order to do so.

From NTSB Aviation Investigation Final Report Postaccident examination of the airframe and engine, which included testing of the flap system, revealed no evidence of mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation. A four-port universal serial bus (USB) power supply adapter was found plugged into a power port located just below the cockpit flap switch. It was undetermined if the adapter conflicted with the operation of the flap switch. Based on available evidence, a reason for the reported flap issue was not determined.
Multiple requests to obtain a completed National Transportation Safety Board Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/Incident form and a statement from the right seat pilot were unsuccessful.

@@Smithy88888 Matt Mansell posted a video about it during the rebuild of his 150. Apparently a slight rut developed in the flap track at 40 degrees that only prevents travel when aerodynamic pressure is pushing the flaps to the back part of the track in flight. There's no pressure on the flaps on the ground, so they retracted normally for the NTSB during their investigation.
At any rate, flaps tend to no produce much extra lift past 30 degrees. Anything past that point and they are effectively spoilers. People tend to only use them for steep approaches over obstacles. You would not, as an example, use them for a low inspection pass on a STOL field like Grider did. There is a reason why Cessna stopped putting 40 degree flaps on their airplanes.

The AQP Dan Gryder promotes dont include EFATO maneuvering, accelerated stalls, Windy GRM or low go arounds. Those maneuvers cause most accidents when done wrong. CFI's that cannot teach them make an AQP without them. A Mild Maneuvering AQP only. A BS AQP.

Meanwhile, if a pilot is having marital issues due to his schedule and wants to seek psychological help in dealing with it, that person could lose their medical certificate for six months to three years the next time they went in to renew their medical certificate (for airline pilots, this is every six months).
