This is a good and informative video. Most people see are the cute side of these creatures but don’t realize how much work is done in the background. There is a lot more to just showing off the otter in videos doing all their cute antics. The care and clean up is no joke. Thank you for posting this video.
This is the first time I've ever heard short/small clawed otters "smell bad"....I've always heard compared to most animals they smell alot better... Pretty much any poop 💩 doesn't "smell good"🙄
All I can say is thank you for a video like this. Most people, [especially those with major RUclips accounts with exotic pets] never show and make videos like this. Any exotic pet may look cute on video, but behind the scenes you never know about. And most people get these exotic pets and refuse to take care of them cause they don't do cute things like in videos.
@@RubysWrath Here is hoping so. Cats and dogs do mark their territory, but it is in urine. Did you watch how the otter whisked its poop around with its tail? You will have to hunt down all the splash damage and clean that up. So kudos to responsible otter pet keepers.
@@lenesmero Dogs and cats also can poop in the house for different reasons, like when they're anxious, upset or scared of being abandonned. I have a friend who's cat has been doing it (poop) on their bed often lately when they leave the house; And when it's urine, because of the hormones it contains, they tend to go back to the same spot and do it again if you don't eliminate the smell perfectly well (and humans can't detect it like them, so it can remain a problem even if it seems clean to us).
@@alexisgs8800 Well, those are unique reasons for cats and dogs to poop, not that common. As for the urine, a cat or dog will not go whip its marking urine all around with its tail. The urine is also a small amount when used to mark territory (though with a very strong scent). Urine is also easier to clean.
@@RubysWrath Cats and dogs are domesticated animals. Training the natural behavior out of a wild animal to turn them into pets shouldn't be encouraged. Pretty sure that's the point of the video.
Absolutely sound advice, thank you! I try to follow only people who I can see are really taking good care of their otters. No animal should be badly treated of course, but these little ones are becoming really dear to me. Stevee Wonders I think a lot of this is probably fueled by social media nowadays. Channels with people who own pets are pretty popular here on youtube, and I would bet quite a few people saw videos of someone having fun with a cute animal they have as a pet and decided to get one too.
That's because he was an idiot and got what he deserved, "At the age of 15, Nutkins lost part of two fingers to one of the otters, named Edal.[7] In the "United Kingdom" episode of the BBC's programme "Deadly 60", Nutkins stated that the otter became aggressive in response to the scent on a jumper that he had been given by a woman that Edal had already attacked and bitten. Wish more people saw this video.. I keep seeing these channels with people who own otters and post all these videos of them and how fun they are, and it makes me wonder how many people went out and got an otter for a pet from watching those, only to abandon them later when they realized how difficult it actually was. Even if the people who own these otters provide them a good life, seeing just the good stuff gives a false impression of how it actually is to take care of them as a pet.

I think the ones people are keeping as pets or in Otter cafes are small clawed river Otters. I watch some of the Japanese channels and it does look like you have to basically give up your life to properly care for them especially because they are very social and don’t like to be alone.
