christian borle is 100% the best wonka, he adds a sense of crazy that is just so necessary for the character. it’s so sad that the set for the broadway version was so crappy , this show would have lasted so much longer if the team had worked just a little bit better

I love Christian Borle to death and think he was a great Wonka, but the Broadway set was absolute trash. Haven't seen the London version but just from this clip it already looks much more grandiose, as it should. And I also love Douglas Hodge from what I see here, his Wonka seems a lot more scary and slightly less charming than Christian's, which totally works.

He was actually the person who did the demos, he was the first to ever sing one of the songs! He didn't think he'd end up being Wonka but it just happened that way as they transferred to broadway. They couldn't use the sets from the London production due to scale and decided on a minimalist set to enforce the "Must be believed to be seen" But I agree the sets were pretty piss poor

As much as I love the West End show, I think the Broadway did this song better. They kept the mystery and creepy undertones but made it less so for Wonka, so it was less of a complete 360 in his personality between the ominous figure in It Must Be Believed to Be Seen to the whimsical fun character in Strike That, Reverse It.

  • @daiikxi

I wish that in all of these productions they kept the "Gold ticket Winners" line cause I thought it added to the song and The sets keep getting worse and worse by them just removing a flap and walking in- I mean the disappearing effects are probably expensive, but that part was really cool. And without the line and the screams there is just to much awkward silence-

    Thoughts…
Alex: Dude can’t sing for shit really, but it fits the character. And I kind of laughed when I heard the voice.
Christian: Has it all…good energy, good singing voice, great expressiveness, and reminds me a bit of a gene wilder/Jonny Depp mashup of Wonkas. If the Broadway production was better (though to be fair the London version wasn’t all that great either) with a better set, than he could’ve gotten a Tony nomination. Though he’s much younger than most of the other Wonkas here, he does great.
Douglas: Definitely getting the Jonny depp vibes from it. Great singer and actor, though not really a conventional musical theatre voice per se. Also had no idea he was in his 50’s at the time, looks younger than that.
Others: good, but not really the best.

Douglas - I do love his Wonka but he feels I bit to into the singing part and I know that it’s good but when he says seen for the final time I couldn’t really understand what word he said the first time I saw the trailer
Alex - I LOVED HIS WONKA SO MUCH, he made Wonka feel so mysterious and how he sang his part in auf wiedersehen augustus gloop he made it feel like a comedy
Jonathan - Now I did like his Wonka, but when he was singing IMBBTBS it felt a bit slow at some times and the fact he went from shouting to having a soft voice, I didn’t like it much

@@Menace_1129 Set and costume design is weaker in my opinion. I don't like how the revised the design vision of the Oompa Loompas. Don't like that they replaced Juicy with the Oompa Loompa song. The choreography and direction is also much weaker, Sam Mendes did a much better job in my opinion. I like Christan Borle however he was a bit too over the top for me at times compared to the West End which was less Bugs Bunny hyper undertones and more Dark and Twisted lost in society man undertones. I don't like The Veiw From here and wish they had of kept Simply Second Nature. Story structure isn't as good, liked how they revealed Wonka being hidden in the shadows of his own factory at the end of the West End Production in the reprise of Must Be Beleived to Be Seen. Also wish they had of kept A Little Me at the end from the West End Production. I also don't like their casting decisions with the other children, seemed like a lazy "get out of jail free card" to me in all honesty which they also did with their cheaper "must be believed to be seen" production design and effects.

The choreography in America actually tells the story though, as opposed to just being random moves thrown together by the cast. It certainly suffered from being scaled down but I think much of the tone was improved for the states. Audiences wanted the movie music, the new score was heavily criticised which is why it tanked in London. Bringing Wonka into the first act as the candy store owner was a great idea for Broadway, also losing one of the bucket parents adds more pathos and makes the story more streamlined. Having the children other than Charlie played by adults allowed for them to be much more grotesque (not to mention makes much more financial sense) someone between the two versions would be the optimal. The London version certainly had a lot of integrity but much of it didn’t translate

I don't like Broadway here. It completely forgets how wonka has been alone for years - all of a sudden he's the most social person ever. Also everyone being so close to wonka is nowhere near as effective as wonka standing alone with crowds either side of him. West end perfectly introduces wonka as a mystery and a genius to everyone who knows about his work. Broadway he's introduced more like a children's entertainer. Borle is amazing but the direction and choreography are off. Also, the other kids singing kind of lowers the spotlight on Wonka - the solo in the West end is completely Wonka
