i just bought the same tape deck and same story here , the owner said that it has bin serviced and everything is working fine,
But its just exactly same story like yours. Must say it wasn't
pricy so I'm actually happy, waiting for new belts and will start working on it soon. Thank You for showing your new toy
Thanks for watching. They say that most people cant detect wow and flutter below 3%. Ie.e it sounds just as good to them from 0% up to 3%. I am not sure about this claim.....I am convinced I can hear it but maybe I cant.....
@@razenby you know i just finish replacing belts on it , they come from England in 2 weeks, flutter is gone now, just go by ear if you can heart it most likely is there , thanks for replaying 🙂

Yes, when used cassette deck ads say: 'serviced', that is a broad term. Big difference between professional technician and hobby technician.
By the hobbyist it's sometimes just a visual inspection inside, dust removal, maybe some lubrication, or new belts, but rollers probably not. It's good to ask.
That deck looks the business, must sound great.
Thanks for watching. Marginal levels Wow and Flutter on the borders of being able to say I can hear the 'wow and flutter' manifests as subliminal effect on the enjoyment of the music. Taking the wow from 3% to 0.5% brain says 'I have no idea why that sounds better but it certainly does'

Around 14:30 ish you show the old pinch roller which you explain is knackered, how it should be flat etc. Then you skip to the meter readings after replacing the pinch roller. Wouldn't it have been a lot more useful - to us - to show the new pinch roller before it was fitted to see what it should look like? Also are pinch rollers universal? If you recommend cleaning the heads and replacing the pinch roller(s) as a good first step in refurb, it would be helpful to get a bit more info. about it. Overall a good video and thanks for taking the time to do it, but maybe putting yourself in the shoes of the watcher might be a good idea.
It is difficult to define what makes a bad pinch roller. Usually it is a dink in the surface where the capstan drive pin has been sitting for years. On others the rubber gets hard. If you have
noticeable wow and flutter the first clean the pulleys, spindle and pinch wheel. If it persists then suspect the belt. An uneven cross-section on the belt will cause problems as it causes variable elasticity along its length.
Pinch rollers are just black rubber, so nothing specific about them apart from the dimensions, and the materials for the spindle (brass/plastic).
If you look at one, you will know if it's needing replacement. It should be clean and smooth. The rubber often hardens over time. Some people use 'Rubber Renue' or similar to bring them back to life, and soften them for good grip.
I am waiting on replacement pinch rollers to be delivered at the moment. The original ones had degraded to the point that the plastic spindle was just a thin film, so they were very loose. This reduced the 'pinching' of the tape against the capstan, so the tape plays fast. This is because the take-up pulley moves faster than the capstan (tape feed).
There is a youuber called 12volt videos. he has the odd cassette in for repair, he has a tone tape for a basic test, and a digital oscilliscope.
I can't remember if he has a flutter/wow tester.
it makes it obvious that there is a transport problem.
I have a german made valve signal generator, cast iron case and an airadrome badge on the front.
The words "Emperfanga Mess sender" is on the front, they got that discription correct lol.

You cant claim a tape deck to be fully working until you have wowed and fluttered Most of the ones I have tested have some problem or other in the mechanism. What are you going to judge the reproduction against. If it sound good then how do you it won't sound better once it has been set up correctly?

Some of the decks ive looked at didnt need a wow and flutter meter, it was so bad lol.
Pinch roller, capstan, belts and clean
Often the pinch roller has lost its softness.
Those daft decks that leave the motor running all the bloody time always need a new motor.
Bloody silly idea leaving the motor running, comutator/brush death.
Ill be glad when there are no more of these horrible things around, at its best it was still a terrible format
I have fond memories. When I was 14 in the mid seventies, this was the only portable format that allowed us to take or music with us and share with friends. It was a great enabling technology that made music accessible to us especially when we were out and about.
Maybe you have only heard Type I (normal bias) pre-recorded (high speed dubbed) cassettes played on a basic player. These can sound terrible.
8 tracks were poor quality too.
But if you record to a Chrome or Metal cassette on a good deck from CD, and play back with good speakers, then the quality is very good.
Cassettes have a wider sound stage than CDs, so it brings out instruments that can be a bit lost with CDs.
